How far to extend the kitchen island and ideas for lightening/cabinets

Wall separating living room and kitchen is coming down. I am putting in a kitchen island. Should I keep the dimensions of the island the same length as the wall that is coming down? It is 5'2"? Also I going to do 2 tier island (bottom tier with gas range top) bar stools on living room side. Should it end at hardwood floor or come farther into living room?

The last picture showing it a pic from a magazine(thought I could do something similar to area/ceiling in kitchen above island) thoughts? Also I wanted to hang lighting over island 2 or3 lights? 1 fixture or separate? Should lights be centered over island?

A lot depends upon whether you are keeping two doorways into the space, which seems a bit excessive, or closing one off. Are you retaining the eat-in area if you put seating on the island, or getting rid of it and expanding the kitchen into that space? Because an island would require a passageway on each side, you might consider a peninsula instead. On the pendant lighting, it is usually one pendant per 2-3 feet, or one fixture that gives you that amount of light. Centering looks more thought-out. That magazine pic is not task lighting, and thus won't work over the island or peninsula.

I want open floor plan was going to keep both doorways open and place island in center. What's a penisula? What's task lighting? Thought maybe the light could go behind back of open cabinets? Thanks for you suggestions
