Vanity lighting - what do you think?

Fizz III 1-Light LED Wall Sconce · More Info

My plan currently calls for a vanity that will be about 85" wide. I'm hoping to be able to use the Robern 30" inch wide Uplift Cabinets - one above each sink. Since they lift up, I can't use wall mounted light over the mirrors. But there should be room for a wall mounted light between the cabinets and on each end of the vanity, either on the back wall or side walls. I may also use some recessed lighting above the vanity too.

My space will be contemporary, and I found these lights that I really like. Fizz III

I'm not sure they will work as the only lights so the recessed lights will be needed as well.

Love the lights but at only 235 lumens per fixture, even with three of them, I think you will definitely need recessed light too.

the table should be very helpful to me and others. I was pretty sure the lights would not be sufficient but thought they might at least reduce shadows from the overhead recessed lights and add some bling. Right now we have a 60 inch single vanity with 2 recessed lights that are 60 watts each, and it's actually been ok for us. But the recessed lights are in a bulkhead so lower than the 8 ft ceiling. Still undecided though, so appreciate all input.

Make sure you have enough space in the wall for the Robern recessed cabinets. I was considering their 7" deep cabinets with uplift, but when they gutted my bathroom, it was clear that there was no room for a recessed cabinet in the wall over my vanities. If you have enough space for the recessed cabinets, another option for side lighting is to use pendant lights to the side of the Robern cabinets.

swguru, yes I do have concerns about the depth of those cabinets, but was thinking that we could semi recess them since we will have walls on each end, and I was planning to do wall mounted faucets so we will have a high backsplash too. We would probably build out the wall above them as far as possible and still allow for the lift. What did you end up getting?

I'm not sure why, but I really don't care for pendants. But then most of the contemporary wall lights designed for bathrooms are just tubes and seem boring and institutional. I'm trying to find something with style, but not a true pendant that hangs from the ceiling. I would prefer something that doesn't project too far off the wall since we will have the semi-recessed cabinet and a 21" (at most) deep vanity. I wanted the keep the vanity shallow because of the wall mounted faucets.

Why is it that EVERYTHING I like is $$$$$. $300+ and I need 3. But this is definitely brighter at 830 Lumens.

numbersjunkie, my vanity is 94" long with dual sinks. I decided to put cabinet "towers" on each end of the vanity, 14"w x14"d, from counter height to ceiling, to store items that would have been placed in the medicine cabinets. I will have a large flat mirror that spans the wall above the sinks. A "crown" will extend over the mirror, between the two towers, and will hold 3 recessed can lights. Another option would have been to have a tower in the center of the vanity, between the two sinks, but I did not like the idea of breaking up the space into "separate" compartments.

I can add side lights to the towers on the sides of the vanity, but don't currently have plans to do that because I have a separate makeup bar, opposite the sink area. The makeup bar mimics the design of the vanity but has no sink, is at table height, 80" long, and 18" depth (so I'm sitting closer to the mirror than I would be at the sinks).

My first design of the makeup counter was to have a built-in 3-way mirror; that is, one flat mirror, with side mirrors at 45 degree angle. But this meant no side lights, or attaching side lights to the angled side mirrors. So, I sacrificed the 3-way mirror to allow for side lights attached to the towers on the sides of the makeup vanity, in addition to the recessed cans above the mirror.

I have not yet shopped for the side lights at the makeup counter.

swguru, sounds like you have a nice setup that works very well for you without any wall lights! We could probably do that if we could build a bulkhead with a slot at the rear so the mirrors would open, but I really wanted to avoid that to keep the room as open spacious looking as possible. And I am trying to keep the design simple, minimalist, contemporary. FYI, here is the style of vanity I am hoping to have custom made for the space, but with a walnut front.

I was also thinking of using a walnut panel between the 2 mirrors and on each end to attach wall sconces. Probably a few recessed lights in the 8 ft ceiling above as well. I really don't need that much light, as I rarely wear makeup, and very little when I do.

Thinking the first light I posted my be too fancy for this space, and the second may be too large, although it does come in a shorter version but still 6"wide.

numbers-I think having more lighting options than you think you might need is the way to go, and the set-up you've described with three sconces and a few recessed lights would serve you well. It's hard for me to tell if the second light you posted would be too big, but I like them both.

I, too, rarely wear much makeup, but I really like the amount of light we have available in our MBR. Our vanity is ~92" and we have a set-up similar to swguru's, with dual sinks but a linen cabinet to the counter between. We elected to put 4 wall sconces in - one on either side of the mirrors. It might sound like overkill, but I really like it. We also have a light in our shower and a panasonic heater/fan/light outside of the shower.

We agonized over lighting (because agonizing is what we do best, apparently), and ended up mocking up our space on graph paper with different sconce choices. That really helped, and then we mocked it up on the wall of our old bathroom before demo. I had lines and tape everywhere on that old bathroom, just to make sure we would like the proportions of the mirrors and the linen cabinet, and the lights.

I really like the looks of that vanity you posted, btw.

In my master bath I have two sinks in a 60" vanity with three sconces and recessed lights in the ceiling. I never ever use the recessed lights. The sconces are enough. They each have two 40 watt fluorescent bulbs and that is plenty of light. Currently redoing the hall bath and also have graph paper filled with mock ups and tape everywhere to make sure the lights and sizes are correct.

This shows the tape outlining the new vanity size, the hanging mirror that will replace the plate mirror and the 26" long sconces that are going on each side of the new mirror. I found it really helps to get the best visualization possible.

(Sorry, the photo is sideways. No idea why and it won't let me fix it and with no Preview anymore I hoped it would right itself during the Submit process. But no luck.)
