Trying to find the perfect golden beige...

last modified: 10 years ago

is driving me crazy!

I'm trying to find a paint color that will go well with my drapes, PB's Allesandra Floral in gold, for my LR and DR. I plan to use this same color in my hallways - it will be the primary color throughout the house.

I've tried SW Blonde; lovely color but has greenish undertones in certain light that make it look a bit off with the drapes.

I've tried a number of BM colors, settling on Pittsfield Buff, another lovely shade. I thought I had solved this riddle until I noticed that it too reads greenish, especially in artificial light, so it ends up reading a bit muddy with the drapes.

I tried it at 50% strength and it seems to blend better so it's probably my best bet but it still doesn't feel quite right.

I recently tried two Rodda Paint colors, Palest of Lemon and Shortbread. I don't like either of them with the drapes. They look like they'd work well but they don't IRL.

I'm stuck and I need help saving my sanity (what little I have left). I know these drapers are popular and have been around awhile so I'm hoping someone here has found a golden beige that works well with them.

Yellows are tricky. Any advice on choosing the right one much appreciated!
I forgot to add that the DR gets south and west light and the LR gets north light. That adds to the trickiness of picking a paint color.

Here are a few links to some information that may help you figure out beige and its undertones.

I was just reading an entry on Maria Killam's blog! But I missed the one you linked to so thanks for providing it. Thanks for the other link, too. I hadn't come across that blog yet.

    BM Greenbriar Beige

I forgot - SW Croissant is another to try. It won't go green, but it could go orange. It can be beautiful in the right space. It's very pretty at night and with sun on it.

Have you considered computer-matching the fabric? Maybe you don't want an exact match?

    Thank you, tibbrix and remodelorbuild!

I already had BM Powell Buff on my list, thanks to the links bac717 provided, but I appreciate knowing how it compares to Pittsfield Buff, remodelorbuild. I'll look at that plus the other colors you suggested and the BM Greenbriar Beige that tibbrix suggested.

Fingers crossed that I find the right one soon so that I can paint these rooms and get rid of all the paint swatches on my walls. That will put an end to DH's joke that our DR and LR are getting the paint quilt treatment.

Arapaho, I haven't tried computer-matching the fabric yet. Might be worth trying though, thanks for the suggestion. I'm not trying to match it exactly - the main color of the drapes is darker than I want to go - but I would like to find a color that blends well with it.

You know what? Skip the Greenbriar Beige. That looks very green.

Check out BM Wheeling Neutral. And I personally love Lenox Tan.

How about SW Bagel? It is not at all greenish in my house.

    Thank you, tibbrix and grapefruit1_ar!

Okay, crossing FM Greenbrair Beige off the list and adding BM Wheeling Neutral, Lenox Tan and SW bagel to the list.

Try Sherwin Williams Believable Buff or Whole Wheat. Both very pretty yellow based beiges.

I have Believable Buff in my house and there are no green undertones.

Thank you, juddgirl2! I've added those two to my list to check tomorrow.

Lately I've been struggling with BM colors and find they just don't have what I want, so here are a couple of PPG colors.

This first shot has a deeper gold to try and match the drapes, but I really don't like the look. (I can't remember the color and it doesn't really matter as the pic started with gray walls and the gray was bleeding through.)

So then I altered the original so the walls were basically white and then I was able to get a truer rendition. In this case the PPG Golden ecru doesn't match either color in the drape, but it blends very nicely.

Here's another with the deeper gold...PPG lion's mane

    Thank you, Annie!

I had to Google PPG because I couldn't figure out which one that was. Now I know: Pittsburgh Paints. Apparently one of my favorite paint stores carries that line although I don't recall seeing it there.

I like the first 2 colors better than the last one (too orange for us, we decorate with red, too). I've added Golden Ecru to my list of paint chips to check today and I'm going to look for one close to the first paint color you tried since it looks promising, at least it does on my monitor. Thank you!

lisa, not sure if you're interested in the color used on the PB website with your gold Allesandra bedding, but if you go to "paint" on their website they can tell you the color used on the walls if you have one of their catalogs. I don't have one so can't check to see the room it's displayed in. The online photo color is nice but not sure if that's what's in the catalog. Hope this is making sense!

PB Paint finder for catalog photos

I used BM Shaker Beige in my great room, it's pretty in every light. No green undertones, a golden beige.

I never knew the PB paint finder for catalog pictures existed, Arapaho. Thanks for the link.

omg, that color in the PB link you posted, Arapaho, is perfect! Thank you! Where did you find that image? I get their catalogs but I don't recall seeing Allesandra Floral bedding in a long time so the on-line paint finder (what a cool thing!) likely won't answer this riddle for me but I really appreciate your help!

This may be a long shot but I'm going to contact PB directly to see if they can provide the paint brand and color used in that image. Fingers crossed! I suspect it's a BM color since PB used to collaborate with BM for years before switching to SW paints a year or two ago.

tjbartley, I've added Shaker Beige to the list. Thank you! I will find a winner out of all of these choices.

    Thank you, everyone!

lisa, that photo is from the PB website for the Allesandra bedding. I bet PB can help you! Let us know. Here's the link-

Thanks, Arapaho! Shortly after I posted, it occurred to me that the photo might have come from PB's site. I sent an email to them asking for help. Sure hope they can.

Thanks so much for hunting that photo down for me! I looked at the drapery page but it never occurred to me to look at the bedding page.

Dang, PB's rep was unable to identify the paint color. However, she suggested that I check with SW because she thinks that same paint color was used in the Holiday 2014 catalog, page 42. I don't have that catalog anymore but maybe my local SW store or PB store does.

If nothing else, I can show the SW folks the photo and see what color they suggest I try.

I'll post my results when I finally find a color in case someone else is on the same pursuit.

Be careful with that pic....if you look under the lamp light, the wall color looks very different from the area on the left over the headboard. So the color may be darker than you think...

Good eyes, Annie. I noticed that, too, when I looked at the photo before heading out to SW earlier today. I prefer the wall color on the left, not the paler color near the window. I have no problem committing to color. = )

SW was, unfortunately, unable to help me. None of the PB colors came close to looking like the wall in the photo. I tried Navaho White - our best guess for that image - but no joy. It's quite wishy-washy next to the drapes, IMO. I'm try the next color down on the strip, Ivoire, which is one up from Blonde, a color I've tried already. Maybe that one will do the trick.

I also picked up a sample of BM Desert Tan, which is promising although I'll want to see how it looks in artificial light. I tried to sample BM Rich Cream but they mixed it incorrectly - too much red in it so it comes out quite pinkish - so I'll need to go back and have them try again. BM Desert Tan is a gorgeous color but if I can go a little lighter, I will. The upstairs and back hallways don't get a lot of daylight so I try not to go too dark on the walls. That said, I've had one of the back hall walls painted a rich, warm blue for years and loved it. But it's time for a change. I'm also saying goodbye to my red walls (15+ yrs). Maybe that's why I'm having a hard time getting excited about some of the lighter colors. They look wimpy next to the rich walls I've been living with for years.

Desert Tan is going to be VERY orange.

You know what color looks very nice in artificial light? BM Putnam Ivory. Also check out BM Delaware Putty.

Pic #1 is Putnam Ivory; #2 is Delaware Putty

lisa, I just noticed that PB paint finder ends with August 2014. There are no newer catalogs to check on. Do you think it could be one of these - I'm guessing CONCORD BUFF?

    PB 2014 Paint Colors

I was concerned that Desert Tan might read orange, tibbrix, but so far, it's looking very good on my walls with my drapes and furnishings and not looking orange at all. A design-savvy friend (she's so good, she could do this for a living) was just over and gave the color the thumbs up. It looks great paired with BM Light Pewter, which is my kitchen/FR paint color.

I won't give it the full thumbs up until night time, though. I need to see how it looks with artificial light. The walls are currently painted Pratt & Larson Caramel at 50%. That color at full strength definitely read orange! I switched to 50% after I had painted more 2 sections of wall below the chair rail in my DR (the top half was P&L Burnt Peanut, a yummy red). I keep comparing what I'm trying to that original color (still have the test paint strip) and it's not as orange as that color was so fingers crossed that it will work.

I still plan to try Rich Cream, one shade lighter on the paint swatch strip, though. It might read as not rich enough but there's no way to know without sampling it.

I looked at the two you suggested - both pretty colors - but they are too gray, too muddy-looking next to my drapes, rug, couch and pillows.

Thanks, Arapaho. The guy at SW showed me the old PB colors but I don't recall seeing Concord Buff. The possible choices were either too pale or too yellow. I can't remember if I looked at Concord Buff or not when I was at the store but I know I pulled loads of strips and discounted all that read green, pink or gray. But I appreciate the suggestion so thank you!

I sent away for a swatch of Allesandra floral drapes in blue. If I absolutely can't find a golden beige that works and the blue drapes look good in my rooms, I'll go that (chickening out) route instead, pick a warm beige that I like and save my sanity. = )

I thought a photo might help so here's one of BM Desert Tan (below chair rail) with my drapes and area rug. This was taken without flash (colors are truer than the photo I took with the flash on).

Colors aren't always captured well by cameras but this is fairly close to how it looks IRL (although to my eye, the wall color looks a bit pinkish and it doesn't look that was IRL at all).

The pale color above the chair rail is SW Navaho White, which looks gray and blah next to my drapes. It doesn't look that way on the paint strip but it falls flat on my walls.

Ignore the gray carpet below the area rug and the various paint colors on the wall. Those are all going away when we remodel.

The desert tan looks really nice. A friend of mine had it in her home and it was beautiful. I was going to suggest Powell Buff as we just had our foyer painted with it and I love it. However your Desert Tan looks good!

I like the way the DT looks in the pic too. And your drapes are beautiful.

    Good to know, thanks sis2two!

Thanks, tibbrix, DR seems to be a good fit. It changed a bit in artificial light at night but not enough to be a big deal, certainly not as off as other paint colors I've tried.

I love these drapes, too. Funny thing is that not that many years ago, I would never have decorated with yellows or golds at all. Then I discovered how much better my cool colors look when there's some warmth added to the mix. And now I find myself drawn to these colors. Never say never.

For anyone else interested in Benjamin Moore's Desert Tan, my daughter's living room, dining room, and hallway are painted Desert Tan. In a room that receives good light, it is a beautiful golden color. It looks very good with BM's Revere Pewter in their kitchen.

However, they painted over Desert Tan in a windowless bathroom and in their basement because it showed a green undertone in those rooms. (Desert Tan was already on the walls in all of these rooms when they bought their house.) She used BM's Ocean Beach in the basement, which is the next lighter color than Antique Parchment (which I believe is the same color as Putnam Ivory) in Benjamin Moore's Classic Colors deck. Ocean Beach in that room is beautiful soft ivory color.

I have Eddie Bauer Flax (color-matched by SW) in my current house and am very happy with the choice. It's a warm neutral with no undertones and looks good in all lighting. Highly recommend it.
