Need help planning size, type of skylights to put in Family Room

My family room is about 15' X 20' with a cathedral ceiling. It's too dark even in daylight. I want to add skylights with the new asphalt shingle roof I'm about to put on. Dilemma: I want to grow houseplants in this room but currently does not get enough light to support them. With skylights I hope to do that. The roof slopes to the South. I'm in Yuma, AZ the sunniest place in the world. What type of skylight lets in the best light for growing plants? Is it the white plexiglass or a clear or tinted natural glass with maybe a high e-factor. Also is there a formula for figuring what size and location to place these skylights for maximum light efficiency? I have asked around quite a bit among roofers and construction places like Lowes and Home Depot but only get mumbling and non-specific answers. Help!
