Wood antique furniture one chest of drawers .

Trying to remove the grit coat off of the stain without damaging the wood. It is 103 years old so I would like to keep it as original as possible. I was thinking of putting a lacquer coat on it after removing the grime, to give it a shine but not removing the character.

Open to ANY suggestions with this piece.

If it has a shellac finish you can use denatured alcohol to redistribute the old finish. First clean with mineral spirits to remove wax and grime. You can use very fine steel wool (000 type) to help you redistribute the old shellac when you use the alcohol. Finish with a fresh coat of shellac. After a week apply a coat of paste wax.
