The trim rings won't sit flush, because of the corrugations, but they'll still sit tight against the tin. If it's a flat tin ceiing you may not notice the voids of the corrugations - I'd have your contractor do a mockup of one to see how it looks beforehand. Another option is to do a pendant light that hangs down, so there's less of a visible connection at the ceiling.
