Wisteria?

It would be very helpful to know the size of the pod. I don't believe it to be from wisteria, which always have a twist to them after they open explosively, sending the seeds in every direction.

The pod is roughly 7" in length and was cut open for the picture - seeds are about 3/4" in diameter. In the area where this pod was retrieved, there are many open pods that are definitely twisted.

At 7" it isn't Redbud. I'd say Wisteria. Is the outside of the pod slightly velvety?

boy ... lack of scale.. on a white background... i would have bet my last penny.. that that thing was not 7 inches ... a good lesson.. for others to note.. just throw anything we might all recognize.. in the pic ...

Said that the seed pods are velvety.

I'm skeptical about the velvety remark. He said slightly when asked that specific question and didn't include it in his original description. Could be some mold growth giving that appearance

I would ask him to check again but he may not want to be grilled and I want to be amicable.

The round seeds are more indicative of Wisteria. Gleditsia are more oval, bean-ish looking.
