Back splash help in "New to me Kitchen"

Just recently moved to a new house in Minnesota. The previous home owners did a Kitchen Reno in 2006. I have painted the whole house BM Revere Pewter and now am thinking about adding a back splash. However i do not even know where to start with placement and type of tile??? Not sure whether to extend it into the desk area where the counter changes over to a laminate, also should it go inside the window over the sink? Open to any and all suggestions.

I am trying to post pictures but it is telling me i am over the allowed number of Characters. Is my picture file to large or is there another trick?

cinmaxw5, this happened to me also, but for me it was when I was trying to learn how to drag and drop a photo from the internet to my post. I was clicking on the Houzz Photo icon, but then I was mistakenly trying to drag and drop the photo into the text box...instead of dropping the photo into the box on the right side of the Houzz Photo window, that says "drop here" or something similar.

Not sure this is what's happening to you, so just posting in case you're making the same mistake I was! I do not think it's indicating your file size is too large...more like a little snafu in how you're trying to post the picture.

If it's a photo on your own computer, you can click on the Photo Icon, and the resulting window should let you choose a file by browsing on your computer. Let me know if I can help. :-)

Thank you for your suggestion however when I click on the photo icon and choose my picture from my folder the only thing that shows up is an icon that is not the actual picture.

Hmmm...just to be clear, are you trying to upload a photo that is stored in a folder on your computer (and using the Photo Icon) or are you trying to upload a photo that is stored in an Ideabook in your Houzz account (and using the Houzz Photo icon?)

If uploading a photo stored on your computer, and using the Photo Icon, it should let you click on the picture in your folder, and then the file name should be filled into the line at the bottom of the File Upload window. Then you click Open at the bottom lower right, and the image should show up in your post.

If something odd is happening here, it might help others chime in if we know the device you're using (PC, mobile device, etc.) My experience is using a PC.

Not sure why this isn't working for you, but hopefully we can figure it out!

I am using a PC and trying to upload a photo from a picture stored on my computer. When I click on the Photo icon I do not get a File Upload window so this seems to be the problem...

Okay. I wonder if the File Upload window is being blocked because of a pop up blocker in your browser? I'm just guessing. When you click on the Photo Icon, is there any message at the top or bottom of your screen saying "Browser blocked a window from opening" or something similar? Maybe it's a setting you can change...?

I ended up dragging pictures from the desktop to the Houzz photo box and it worked that way although I am not sure how to upload multiple pictures - but success none the less! Yay!!

    Hooray!

I'm sure folks will be along with good backsplash tile suggestions for you, but I have to say, what a pretty kitchen you have. The floor, cabinets and countertops are great; you have a lot to work with here, so adding a backsplash should be very satisfying. Love that beautiful big window, too. I 've never had a desk in a kitchen like that, but I think I would truly love working in that space. (If the cat would share with me.)

Lol - Thank you so much... yes i love the desk space very much and Rico my cat is a pretty good sharer. I just put a bird feeder outside this weekend so he is really enjoying this spot watching the cardinals and the all the squirrels out the window playing. i look forward to the advice coming along.

I'm thinking the best look would be to tile into the return to your sink window (go around the corner, towards the window, especially because it's a pretty deep return. But I think you'll need bullnose tiles to round the corner, so that's something to keep in mind as you choose tile. Bullnose tiles might need to be special ordered?

I think I'd probably extend the backsplash into the desk area also with the laminate counters, as well.

(I'll be interested to see what other folks have to say.)

Too cute...we have a thing here on GW about our pets matching our kitchen and Rico goes purrfect!

With the rich warm orangish tones of your wood floors and cabs, the orange flecks in the counter, and pendant lights, everything is blending together nicely. I really like the revere pewter color on your walls with the white trim.

How about just a plain white (warm white) subway tile? Or maybe the grey allen and Roth Pearl subway like in this thread? I think they might go perfect with the laminate on the desk area. http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2972068/another-backsplash-help-needed-plea?n=17

Some like this taupe backsplash would work well:

Your cabinets are beautiful. I think a slate or a Craftsman-look tile would be nice. I do think I'd continue the backsplash through the desk area. Maybe something like these?

Cin - what do you think of the third picture that jlc posted above? I found this info on it from the More info link "Tile Gallerie, Dublin, PA (215) 249-4848. It was called 2 x 4 California gold slate; the grout is "navajo brown" - it is really a tan color. purchased Jan 2012.

I do like the first picture as well but it is paired with a fairly uniform counter (soapstone maybe?) but it may be too busy with all the pattern and flecks in yours.

Find some that you like by searching pictures on Houzz and then order some samples and go forward from there. The hard part is narrowing down the type/style and color that you want to focus on initially.

I like the idea of stone, but I could also see a glass mosaic, maybe something vaguely craftsman in feel?

I think you want to get away from too much of the "sameness" feel of the brown and orange but I don't know how light you could go.

Can you remove the short slash? Otherwise I wouldn't add a tile splash. You've got too much intruding on the available space with the short splash, microwave, and stove panel. I think the desk area would look odd tiled since it doesn't feel kitcheny. The small counter area will need to be tiled out to the edge of the wall, and I've not seen that before.

You might change the hardware to ORB to give a little visual break to the cabinetry. The pendants are beautiful but the orange blends in with the orange tones of the cherry, so new pendants could work wonders. Long term I'd want to change the countertop to eliminate the orange. I only mention it because it looks like you'd only need one slab of countertop material.
