It's a good thing you caught that hole when it was still pretty small. Even though you mentioned that birds can fit through it, it could've been much worse. Foam spray isn't always the best solution, especially for holes of this size. You may want to look into hiring a roof repair service. You need to look at the whole assembly to be sure that it's vented properly. You should be able to see daylight at the eaves, from the vented soffits that allow air into the attic. However, there appear to be no insulation baffles to keep the air flow from being blocked by the insulation. The whole assembly likely needs attention if you don't want a moisture issue below from the cool home air causing the hot moist attic air to condense and drip below.
