What can I do to update this fireplace?
Comments (12)We had our fireplace sandblasted- a few shades lighter than the walls. It's a buttercream yellow. I suggest a runner to hang down over the mantel- maybe 3 or 4 inches. Maybe a fold of print material with a tassel on each end. I have an antique mirror over my mantel- I decorate for the holidays and seasons. For Spring and summer months I have a fairy garden greenhouse. No telling how many things I have decorated with over the last 30 years (:...See MoreDated fireplace with high ceiling- put tv over it ?
Comments (6)The concern that husband has is that converting the cabinet to a space that holds a flat screen won't allow for a big enough tv ( I'm actually outnumbered 3 boys to 1). What about removing the mantel and lowering the profile? Our style is a bit contemporary so the idea of tile/slab with no true mantle is ok with me I just don't know if it matters that my ceiling is so high...See MoreI hate this outdated fireplace surround. What can I do to update it?
Comments (20)I actually think this fireplace is charming and cozy. I do see this look still in design pics: If this was my space I would bring down the TV and put it next to the fireplace. Actually, that is how my basement TV and fireplace are arranged. Built-ins might not be in the budget, but this is a good look. It would allow you to decorate the mantel in your more contemporary style. I don't think it is the fireplace that is the real problem - but the TV above does not give you space to dress the room in your style. From Pinterest: Most of the pros here only put the TV over the fireplace if there is no other place. In my basement, I would have to crane my neck to see the TV if it was over the fireplace and I could not possibly lay on the couch and watch TV. I find it cold, and much prefer the first two pics I posted, but that is personal preference, and you don't need to think about it unless you are selling soon....See MoreFireplace tile update . Comments (15)Would it be a consideration to start working with the grey/tile color combo in that room? I don't know what else is in the room, but maybe throw pillows, pictures/accessories above and around fireplace, that work with both colors? Or, as mentioned before, actually removing tiles and replacing with something else is the other option. I'm also thinking that the white paint could be toned down with more grey in it. And...I am with Flo Mangen...a similar rail or pot or really skinny console table by the door should probably be put next to the drop off by the stairs. Best of luck!...See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
