Bad influences, the whole lot of you!

So. You have all been ever so helpful, not only with decorating, helping me keep with my 'vision' (whatever that may be, it seems to change with the moon).

Now. I have been doing some light reading in this site, specifically regarding Rough Linen bedding. Do you realize i would never know this place existed if not for you? Now I need to buy all the linen! It just looks so gorgeously sloppy and elegantly casual and inviting.

Couldn't I justify it by never looking for bedding again? Do you realize I've never paid more than $40 for a king sized set if sheets? Would this finally solve my duvet cover problem? (the fact that I have bought every duvet cover known to man and returned them all? )

So I haven't even told my DH about this bedding except for "I have my eye on bedding-don't even ask." Hmm- our 10th anniversary is next month....would be cheaper than a diamond ring...

Sigh. So while you guys are so wonderfully helpful, I'm sure my life would have been complete without knowing about RL bedding. And now I NEED it.

I have a pinafore on its way. Happy Mother's Day to myself!

Looking through so many holiday candid pics, including recents from Easter, I'm often wearing an apron. Might as well be one I love. It's an easily justifiable expense for me if I figure cost-per-wear. I wear an apron at some point for indoor/outdoor chores/cooking nearly every day.

I was so pleased that she offers a petite version. I'm often swallowed up by most aprons.

That's a wonderful Mother's Day present to yourself! I was not an apron wearer at all, but the pinafore just feels right. You will love love it.

Rough Linen bedding....what is it? I wish I hadn't come over here to browse cause now I'm curious.

I love my pinafore too but I wish I had purchased the regular length. I'm busty and it makes the pinny even shorter. I am going to give my DD my petite one and I'm going to buy the longer one. My pinny is black and I love it.

I just washed my linens yesterday. I dry the sheets on low in the dryer but I iron my pillow slips while still damp. I love seeing the pressed linen but I also love the wonderfully soft yet textural feel of the unpressed sheets. I bought my summer bed as a birthday gift for myself last September and I think it was the loveliest gift I've ever given myself.

I just ordered the longer pinny, two additional pillowslips, and three tea towels. I'm a tea towel hoarder but I'll bet the ones I use the most will be my linen ones.

Rough Linen is a brand sold mostly online, made by hand in CA from European linen (though she is working to change that and source some here). It was hard to imagine what linen bedding would feel like, though I've always liked linen clothing. It is hard to describe, too but it has a lovely hand and feel to the skin, is crisp but soft, nice weight (light but substantial) that breathes yet doesn't have a chill in winter. It is reassuringly natural and comfortable. What it isn't is cheap.

King sheets (she only sells flat sheets, so 2 of those plus 2 pillow slips) will run you about $500. Summer bed option is a few dollars more and includes one sheet and two pillow slips with a larger summer cover that is intended to be left untucked. In the Orkney weight, it is slightly heavier and fills that middle zone between a cotton sheet being too light with AC or uncovered without it and a blanket being too warm without cranking that AC even harder.

For me at least, they are one of those "stop looking" things. I bet we went a few months with no other sheets on the bed -- perhaps it was getting into the holidays when we got too busy to wash the sheets and get them back on the bed the same day. They are a simple necessity taken to the level where they fill a need in a very practical way, but also an indulgent way.

Lascaux, you explained it so well. Once you go with RL sheets you will never have to look for sheets again because you know where they will be purchased. Your description of them is also spot on.

I do love to stop looking! I get set in my ways (at the ripe age age of 37!) and I hate looking for different stuff when I'm happy with what I have. Ie, I don't need a blender or pots as I loove mine. I like simple but natural and beautiful. Sigh. One day! My fireclay samples arrived, now to wait for my linen samples!

Sound luxurious! May have to make it a Christmas present for ouselves. Is there just one place to purchase?

Rough Linen website (roughinen, com) unless you happen to spot her at a show. She sent out an email about an antique show she was going to be at for the first time, but other than that, I can only remember being able to buy from the website. It is a tactile purchases, so you can put it off without being able to experience it, but then you wish you hadn't.

@designssavy, I believe you can only purchase from the website.

I just remembered that Portland has a French Quarter Linens store in the Pearl District. Their other two stores are in Beverly Hills and SF. Their linens are European and there are many choices of colors and designs. They have fitted sheets.

May_flowers, those are even more expensive. I have read and heard that RLs fabris is more substantial than other linen bedding and is meant to be heirloom quality -- inspired by her grandmother's linens. After shredding sheets of my own and reading about other brands of lighter linen shredding or ripping, I'm likely to stick to what I know and like, but let us know if you try the others.

if you are unsure, try buying a pillowcase first. I highly recommend the bolster cases RL sells. Need another!

    also . . . mea culpa!

@violetwest-yes, I'm looking at you! Those bolsters do look amazing. Would hide that naked spot. Wouldn't it all look divine with this bed??

Oh come on, lascatx. Isn't there something you'd like from French Quarter Linens? How about a nice shower curtain? $160, but 15% off till the end of April. ;)

I thought everything was linen there. I remember going in a few years ago and feeling the stuff.

LOL, may_flowers. If I were in the store, I'm sure I could find plenty of things I would like. Look lovely. And having DH with me would be downright dangerous. But buying linens is such a tactile thing for me -- I want to see and more importantly feel the fabric. Nothing bugs me more than stores that prevent you from feeling the fabric. I first heard of Rough Linen about tree years ago with folks on the forum (cant remember if it was GW or another one) were raving about them. It still took me about a year to get the pinafore (think I made a very directed Christmas hint) and two years before I finally ordered the sheets. With that kind of record, I'm likely to take what I know over ordering another brand unseen and untouched.

I didn't open this for days and days because I didn't want to be tempted. You guys are killing me. Filing RL sheets away for "someday". :) I'm busy convincing DH I need new wheels for my old convertible. I'm a sucker for a fancy wheel.

I've read previous posts about RL and managed to talk myself out of spending so much on linens; that is until now. I've got to have one of their pinafores. I'm 5'2" and size 12/14. Many of you have the pinafores. They have an adult petite but don't indicate the size. Does anyone have the petite? If so, how roomy is it? I think I see linens in my future. Thanks!

Bethpen, how fun to have a convertible. I had one before I was married and until DH and I had our first son. It didn't work with a car seat, so I sold it to an acrobat touring with Cirque du Soleil. I have a moonroof, two kids in college and a fun story now. If your DH isn't going for the wheels, you could always concede that something you and he could both enjoy for 1/3 of every day would make sense, back him into the linen sheets and file the wheels away for later. That's st least something most men would like to buy for a surprise and it sounds like me already knows what you want. I know. I'm bad. ;)

Oldhouse, I got the adult when I am guessing that was the only size offered (one adult and one child size). I had to send mine back to have the straps lengthened, but I've got 10 inches on you. If you get the petite, yours will probably fit you about like mine does me, but the body would be longer on you. I would like that. If still in doubt, call and ask their recommendation.

oldhouse1, my petite pinafore was delivered today !! so I can offer an opinion on size. Mine is just right for me but I'm an 8P. It is mini skirt length in the front & drapes a little longer in the back. Perfect right now and I don't anticipate much shrinkage if I wash in cold & line dry.

I would suggest anyone bustier and/or taller than I am (5'2") should go with the regular size. Wow! I'm checking the hem to see if it would be simple to shorten and just noticed the mitered finish where the side and back hem meet. This is a simple garment but the workmanship is top notch!

    Hope this helps ;)

Thanks lascatx, I thought the petite would probably fit me the way the regular fit you but am surprised to hear that it is mini skirt length on amck2. The regular size seems to come down to most peoples knees I believe. Thanks amck2, I think I will call tomorrow and get the specifics since it doesn't seem to show a size on the petite either. Thanks for your help!

Mine comes above the knees -- like a couple or few inches above, but the pockets are at a good height. Wearing it over clothes, the length is not as important to me as the pocket placement. It's well past the hips and thighs and that's about where splatters and drips seem to end. I like it. It's functional, but I would try a longer one too as long as the pockets stayed put.

Now back to sheets.....I got a sale catalog from Macy's announcing Mother's Day and Friends and Family sale. They have Hotel Collection linen sheets that will be on sale for $99 per sheet and perhaps the additional F&F discount. That could be a way to try linen to see if you like the feel. Haven't seen them and don't know how they compare to RL, but it's an option.

Oldhouse, I am only 5'2" and ordered the petite last September. I am busty so the petite is just too short. I would say almost micro mini. I ordered the adult regular the other day and hope that maybe it arrived today. I will let you know how it compares I am larger than Amck. I wear a 10 to 12 petite.

Busty is not my primary concern.

Lascatx, took a quick look at the linen sheets at Macy's online. 1 review, not favourable. I seem to be of the type that when I find something I want to get the absolute best that I can and read reviews to death. Ie, vitamix vs blendtec. I'm sure my dh is happy i just bought one! Videos and blogs and articles! Sigh. I think if I just went to work for the equivalent of the time I spent researching I'd have those sheets payed for in no time! Thanks for the alternative!

Thanks lascatz, I didn't have a chance to call today but will tomorrow. I think the regular length might be best. I admit I have never owned a single piece of linen clothing, only tea towels, and there was a time when the wrinkles would have driven me crazy but the I just love the casual and comfortable look of this linen and just love the look of the summer beds. I guess I'm getting less uptight in my older age. (thanks for the heads up on the Hotel Collection)

holly kay, we are similar in height and I too am busty. I'm thinking the regular may be the way to go. I would appreciate your letting me know what you think of the regular and let me know where the pockets fall. I am size 12/14 and am working on getting this weight in check before the big 60 next year but I'd like to know how roomy it is on you as well. Thanks!

Lol aki_vdb, we must be twins. It's exhausting isn't it?

I was moved to learn how to use the timer on my iPad to take a photo of myself wearing the petite pinny in hopes it may help someone gauge the length and see where the pockets are on a 5'2" person.

Had this not been so spur of the moment I would have set up a cuter shot - including a goose ;)

Amck, that looks perfect on you. On me the petite is much shorter. Being busty is a pita!

I just tried my petite on as it has been ages since I put it on. Because of being busty the petite ends really high on my body and the pockets are above my waist. I rather think that this may have been cut a tad too short. My Dd is busty too but so tiny. She wears a petite 2 so I think this may work for her.

Oldhouse1- so exhausting! I wish I could just go out and buy something. But no, not impulsive in that way!

Amck2-too cute! I do have to say, the goose only would have added to that shot ;)

Old house, I have a petite and I am 5'2" and average bust (wear size 6). I think the petite is too short. I want to order a regular. DD is only 4'8" and I may give the petite to her, although she never wears an apron and doesn't think she wants it (she actually should wear it to eat in as she is the messiest of my kids, even at 30 years old!). I don't have a picture, but the RL website does say petite is for 5'0 and below. I should've paid attention, spent the extra $5 and got the regular. LOVE MY SHEETS!

have to say the pinafore does not appeal to me--can't imagine where I'd wear it or how it would be useful

I don't' wear it out. It is an apron with pockets that doesn't pull on your neck and gives full coverage (top and bottom -- sleeves no more so that other aprons). No ties to tie, have loosen or get stuck behind your back. And to be honest, the linen is great for drying your hands if that pesky towel has wandered away. It simply feels better than any apron I have worn and therefore, I am more likely to use it.

I'm hoping the pinny becomes available in the charcoal grey.

My gosh, I remember the days before fitted sheets, and Mom teaching me how to make 'hospital corners'. Since fitted came out, i've never thought to use the flat as a bottom sheet, but remember how tight it could be pulled, and stayed in place. These days, depending on which type you buy, they're either sloppy big, or can't get all 4 corners to fit properly. I may go back to flat, even though they're a little more work to put on because of the folded corners, but they look verrrrrry neat !

Well, I looked at the pic I posted yesterday and I hope it doesn't put anyone off on buying a pinny, lol! I shot & posted on impulse thinking only of showing size & pocket placement. Really, that picture doesn't do it justice. The angle/lighting/my work clothes under it.... I meant well. But, honestly, it's much more charming than that.

Anyway, I love mine so much I'm getting a second one in natural to keep at the lake. Maybe I will post a better shot when that comes in - taken in a woodsy setting, at an angle showing the side sweep, with rolled up skinny jeans, cute flats and holding a goose ; ))

I guess I just have never worn an apron, and not about to start.

I cannot make hospital corners, so I just shove the ends under, ha!

amck, the picture of you in your pinny is adorable, I think you definitely make it look classy!

Debbi, I agree that the petite is too short.

Lasctx, I was never much in to wearing aprons but loved the looks of the pinny and thought it would come in handy when checking the hen house for eggs.

Oldhouse, my regular size pinny came today and the length is perfect for me.

I love the idea of wearing it to gather eggs. Just wish I could have chickens where I live. I'd have to keep them away from the dogs -- well, one of them anyway, but I would love to be able to have a couple/few chickens and be able to have fresh eggs.

Oh for gosh sakes! Have you people no shame? Now you have forced me into ordering a pinafore. A pinafore! I didn't even know such a thing existed before you lot and now I can't live without one. And, let's face it, I'll probably order two because I can't decide between colours. Bad influences, indeed!

    last modified: 11 years ago

Wait until I figure out how to have chickens in my suburb neighborhood. ;-)

@daisychain01- if 1 doesn't fit, you know I'm in your hood, right? Feel free to toss me your pinny if you change your mind. And of course I'll give you my unbiased opinion on how they look on you ;)

You girls are funny! Daisy you will fall in love with your new pinny! I could have several in all the colors and be happy happy.

Lascatx, are you positive that zoning prevents you from having a few chickens? Most suburban areas in PA allow up to three hens but no roosters allowed. We started out with three pullets and a cockerel (we're in the country) and now have one rooster and 22 hens. Having fresh eggs is amazing. The yolks are so dark of a yellow that they are almost orange and the flavor is incomparable.

Love that this conversation about linen sheets has progressed to zoning for chickens! We all learn so much from this site!

Holly-Kay, I was pretty sure I remembered a pretty tight limitation on pets/animals. I couldn't find the covenants or restrictions online, but someone posted a quote limiting animals to "customary household pets." There seems to be a presumption that dogs and cats fit the description but fish, snakes, lizards -- doesn't say where the line is drawn. And ten there is a clause "except as allowed by [the regulating authority]." Well there's a loophole they could run a chicken coup through - at least a small one. Maybe I'll make some inquiries and see if I can get them to allow a small number of chickens -- though I'm pretty sure roosters wont be allowed on what are mostly 1/4 acre lots. Not sure I'd want them either.

But to stay on topic -- will definitely be another reason to wear my pinafore! :)

I would love some chickens. We have 1/2 acre in the suburbs. Would be a good reason for a pinafore! Oh, and fresh eggs of course :)

Lascatx, you definitely don't want a rooster. Our boy starts crowing around five o'clock. I love his crowing but it would drive most people batty. Having a rooster in the country is pretty much a necessity. He watches over the girls and makes sure he warns them in case of predators.

AKL, no staying on topic for all of us. I hope you will consider some hens, they are really lovely creatures and they have tons of personality.
