What should I expect when they rip out my old countertops?

I'm updating my kitchen - still love my maple shaker cabinets and they still look new. But when I was building we put in laminate counter tops because there was this odd bad timing when I needed counter tops there were quite a few buildings using granite and they basically no one was interested in a kitchen job when they had bigger business.

I'm ripping out laminate counters and installing 3 cm quartz with undermount sinks and new faucets.

I'm wondering what kind of mess can I expect? What should I do to protect what is in the drawers/cabinets?

What kind of mess can I expect when they return to install the counters and later the quartz backsplash which will run up to the cabinet. The only cut outs will be for both sinks and faucets so I presume that will be cut in their factory?

We removed or covered everything on the upper shelves/drawers.

Thanks, that was helpful to hear your process.

Ask your installer what to expect -- if it will be a gentle removal with little mess or a just break it up and create dust and splinters job. I have seen some people mention needing to protect drawer glides from dust in the latter case. In my case (although it was a total demo including the cabinets) there was a huge amount of dust created.

Our laminate perimeter counters & sink were just removed a few hours ago. We removed our top drawers, so the contractors had easy access for removal of the laminate. Not messy at all; just a little bit of wood shavings, as we had them cut the laminate into sections (so our teenage son can repurpose them for his sound/computer equipment in the basement). Took about an hour...easy!

The fabricators arrive in a couple of hours to install our 3 cm quartzite (cut at their shop) and new sink. Then our contractor will come back to hook up the new faucet. Fingers crossed it all looks ok!! I will take oasisowner's advice and cover everything on the upper shelves/drawers. Thanks for the tip!

My3dogs - Love your kitchen! I am considering beadboard for our backsplash after seeing yours; lovely! We're installing Sueded (honed with subtle texture) Sea Pearl quartzite.

ooh, I just looked at Sea Pearl online and saw some that looked very much like my Fantasy Brown. My bead board (shhh!) is the PVC type that I have linked below at HD. I have it in 2 bathrooms as wainscot, painted the trim color as in the kitchen, and it is just as easy as tile or stone backsplash to clean. Inexpensive and goes up quickly, too.

Let's hope Alexa has as good an experience as we did in her counter top removal.

HI raee_gw, yes, they said it's supposed to be gentle removal. They will take the sinks and faucets back to their factory so all major cutting is done away from my home. If they need to make some slight adjustments on site, they will do it outside on my driveway. I do have a lot of bottom drawers - I think I should cover them with something - maybe plastic wrap so no dust gets in he runners or drawers. Thanks.

wags4fun - wow, that Sea Pearl quartzite is stunning - I hope you are thrilled with them once they are in place. Please post photos when they are done, I love to see gorgeous quartzites . And yes, good idea to remove the top drawers. I've been told that they measure and then go back to the shop and make my counters - then they come back to install and the plumber comes the next day. They told me they can't template the backsplash until the counter top is in, so that they come back a few days later to install. BTW, I love your name - you must have some happy dogs in your house?

My3dogs - LOL, I'm glad you posted about your beadboard - I think I'll borrow that idea for the family bathroom which is next on my list.

Thanks all for the positive vibes.....I'm hopeful it will all go smoothly.

We do have a very happy dog, but my user name is from my nickname from my youth..."Wags" (a spin from my last name). :)
