Since it is drooping over the pot like that, I would cut the thick stem in a way that I could plant the rosette upright. Then just stick it in the ground.

Otherwise, the simplest solution would be to unpot the plant, gently rinse the soil off the roots and stick it in the ground.

Please disregard the suggestion in the prior post, since that may kill your plant. Transplanting could not be simpler. Dig a hole, then grip the plant by the trunk and separate it from the pot before placement in said hole. The potted soil should hold together for minimal root disturbance.

When I lived in Hawaii, I treated my A. attenuata like poster #1. And it did fine. But I can understand that if one did the same thing in Phoenix Arizona, it might freak the poor thing out. These plants are much more tropical than deserty. It is all about habitat and where you live. You will be stressing the plant when you cut it off. If you live where it is very hot and dry, the plant is already in stress and might not be able to take the additional stress.. I would let it callous on its end before I stick it in the soil if you go for option #1. I would agree with poster #2 if you are anywhere very hot and dry.. We normaly just let them lean out like that .

Thanks for the advice, all. We live in Southern California, not sure if I mentioned that. So, it's not tropical but not quite the desert either. I think I'll opt for keeping the roots and place it in a hole. Does it matter if I put the roots deeper down, so I don't have such a long trunk?

If you leave the top side of the trunk exposed it will likely develop more rosettes along its length that will hide the trunk. In another thread somewhere on here someone said you can successfully plant them deeper to bury the trunk, but I've not done that myself. You might do a search to see if you can find that thread.

Yes Hoovb you can bury the trunk and it will throw out roots along the whole of the buried part. You can also cut the main rosette off, leaving the trunk planted, and the trunk will throw off a ton of pups all along it. It looks horrible when you do that, but it is a good way to get a lot of pups really quickly.
