Unfurling favourite hosta photos

I'm surrounded by snow so I came up with a thread idea from Jon's post on edible shoots actually. Thanks for the inspiration! ;-)

Do you have a favourite shot, or more, where you captured a hosta in the unfurling stage? That perfect rosette, funnel, vortex or whatever word you might use to show the awakening beauty of hosta leaves? Before they fully open up?

I had to really search but I found a few to get us started.

Since our southern-most friends have theirs already actively growing, their pics would be more recent. But they don't have to be. Mine obviously are from last year.

So then, hunt through your pictures and find your favourite(s) UNFURLING hosta(s) to share.

My first one pictured above is 'Frances Williams'.

This golden beauty is Marrakech. Almost too unfurled but rosettes still present.

Can't see down into the rosettes but seeing the white strip of Striptease is interesting. Will have to try and capture a "rosette" shot this season!

Also almost too open, this is 'Hydon Sunset', a mini.

'Guardian Angel'

'Fire and Ice'

'Wheee!' could be further along by maybe a week..I'll try for a better pic this year.

Well, that should get us started....surprisingly, I don't have as many as I thought I did!

    Sagae on a sunny bank

Just transplanted Orange Marmalade. Do, Rey, Mi, Fa, So ,La.....a stunning septet. Seems to like it's new home.

New Liberty....or maybe an alien lizard creature???

Another Sagae in a shadier spot.

Unfurling is just starting here in the new No. Dakota territories.

Dave, hurrah for the rain! Great pics!

Jon, the Sagae parade is starting, eh? :). Great pics too!

Jo, things are moving fast here now, The Lizardtine Liberty has it's mouth gaping open now; I unearthed 3 Sagae struggling to push through the leaves in the Ravine. This thread may linger for a long time.

Bc hosta: thanks for the picture of snake eyes. I love that one and is on my wish list.

Nice sharp pics, Don! (Camera or ???) Things are really moving in your garden! When I saw Spartacus, the ribs on the veins under leaf made me stop and stare awhile! That is a nice leaf angle.

Jon, love your Orange Marmalade pic and your humorous caption!

Spartacus' leaf tip seems to be waving at the camera...

Steve, your photos are awesome! Thanks for the compliment!

Wow, love the Snake Eyes, BCHosta.

Don, that one Spartacus leaf reminds me of the lower jaw of a Bryde's Whale in feeding mode. :)

I am speechless at the awesome pics of these beautiful hostas. They look like noble warriors ready to take on the world with their brave swords emerging from the soil.

OMG! Those droplets look like "frosting"! Stunning, stunning photos, talented Mrs. Photographer!! I can't get over how far along your plants are, NHL. Look at the difference an hour south makes.

Sincerely, you have an exceptional eye with the camera!

Jo, just realized the title states "favourite ".

Is that favourite photo or favourite hosta?

Whose to chose? it's like asking who is your favourite child?

    They are all favourite!

Any way which one of these ?

    This one ? War Paint

    or this one. Sagae

Newhostalady, unlike JO Your first photo of leaves reminds me of the salted rim around a frozen margarita.....You can see where my mind is. LOL Love the pic.

Thanks Jo! At present, Wolverine (in pot), GE (in pot), Seducer (in pot) and Wide Brim (in ground) are ahead of the rest in growth this season. I still have a few that haven't emerged as yet. Here is a photo of Wide Brim today after watering.

DelawareDonna . . . now that you mention it, I can see why you thought of a Frozen Margarita! Thanks for my first chuckle of the day!

Dave, never mind, I see your "problem" lol but I'm with you...of course they are all favourites! I'd like to live there, at your "nursery"! What wonderful pictures of beautiful hostas. Love the light showing through the hostas. You get the urge to post more, please do so! All these pics carry me closer to my day of unfurling...still a week or more away :(

NHL, WB looks really pretty unfurling. Yours already has corrugation..how old is it? Mine's just new last year...very full it was. What can I expect? Thanks!

Jo, the Wide Brim in the picture is a division of a hosta I moved last year. I have had this Wide Brim for longer than I can remember (before my hostaholic days). I do have two other so-called Wide Brims that I got in 2011, but they have grown very slowly. I am getting the feeling that they are actually Brim Cup rather than Wide Brim. I will do some investigating this year. Sorry I can't answer your question.

Mbug, great photography! The first one, Minuteman made my eyes pop. So crisp, and dark green makes the white really pop! Looking at GE stopped my heart for a second, wow! Can't wait for mine! Then I took a deep breath and continued, lol. You just keep going if you've got them!

(You had some terrible losses, but looking at these samples, you have many, many gorgeous hosta to appreciate while you decide what to replace. I've been there too...hosta-retail-therapy is the ticket!)

I'm not sure you noticed that the Lemontini photo is Barb's? I really like that one too. Glad to see you getting in on the action Barb!

Took this photo today. It's one of my top ten favorite hostas---Earth Angel.

And I'm a sucker for drops!

Ha ha ha, no, I actually didn't (she says giggling like a fool)!!!! well, the compliment goes to Barb...just shoot me! Minuteman kinda threw me...gorgeous catapylls and YOUR (NHL) threads on Patriot/minuteman were still on the brain....I really am just swimming in all this blissful beauty where names just whizz by and hostas take over!

    Forgive me, Barb.

I think Earth Angel with drops just superceded all your other droplet pics! That leaf on the right with those hues? Unbelievably beautiful.! Does the AHS have photography contests? You should enter.

PLEASE, please, submit some of your stunning pics to the Library at least. More people should have access to such beauty.

Really rough day here in Wales. 50 mile an hour gusts of wind and torrential bursts of rain battering everything. The poor hostas I put back out over the weekend are really taking a pounding. Going to be more than a few shredded leaves by the time this is over.

To console myself I have been looking at the pictures I took over the last few days.

    War Paint

    Wide Brim

    Liberty. Just about leafed out.

Bridal Falls. New last year, rippled edge already!

Neptune. Also new last year. Almost looks like it has a lighter margin in this photo.

Don't know whether it will show up on your screens.

Off now to see if the wind has done any damage yet !

Beautiful shots Dave, I still have mine indoors, each time I look at the forcast it looks bad, hopefully at the weekend I'll risk putting them back out.

Jo, thank you for the compliments on the Earth Angel photo. I am glad you liked it! The AHS does have a photography contest once a year, but there are so many more talented, and maybe professional, photographers that I wouldn't stand a chance. But I am flattered that you think I should submit the photo. As for the Hosta Library, I haven't submitted any photos yet, but maybe one day . . . . .

How did your hostas fare Dave?

Glad to see your Deep Blue Sea has smartened up, Don!

NHL, flattery, schmattery, you don't give yourself enough credit! If only professional photographers entered, what would be the point? I say, GO FOR IT!

You won a leaf exhibition! I bet you thought you wouldn't win that (am I right?) ....but you entered anyway. It's up to you, I can't make you (would that I could, lol) but if you keep producing such stunning photos, expect me NOT to stay quiet!!! :-)

Isn't it enough encouragement to get kudos from Steve Shaw and LUUK???
