My haul from the UTEP annual native plant sale

So excited to go this year. For those of you who don't know, the University of Texas at El Paso has a wonderful Chihuahuan Desert Garden and they put on this plant sale every year as a fundraiser.

I found two precious Victoria Regina agaves (which I had been looking for), and also got two blackfoot daisies, a catmint, two Mexican oregano (which I had also been looking everywhere for) and a Mediterranean germander (which isn't native, but adapted, and I needed a ground cover. It was fun -- now I have to dig holes!

Make shore that those agaves get real good drainage. They grow on cliffs in Mexico. Mine are prone to anthracnose when they get cold and wet. So , no watering in winter. You should not have to worry about that in west Texas.

Oh, I started a thread on cuttings for you. Not that you need more plants right now. LOL.

Gosh, those are so great. I'm so envious about your Mexican oregano. I've been looking, too. That looks like a great event to attend.

Nice plants! Coming home and digging is the worst part for me.

yeah, and the weather hasn't been good since Saturday so they're still in pots. Maybe this evening will be better!

Looks like a great sale! Strange that you guys can't find Mexican Oregano. It is a common nursery plant in Austin if you are not in a Big Box. There are actually two unrelated ones. I have the Mex. O. that is Poliomintha longiflora that blooms pink all summer long on no water . It grows really well from cuttings, so one can make more if you know of someone who has them. The other one, I would like to get my hands on is Lippia graveolens which blooms white. Both are used for cooking and both are good for arid gardens. Which one did you get?

I'll have to look at the tag, but probably the first one. I have no idea how to propagate from cuttings -- still a very newbie gardener!

@wantonamara - I checked, and it says poliomintha maderensus "Civano select"

It came from Civano nursery in Tucson; link for curious here Civano mexican oregano

It appears that Civano is making a "trade name" on a wild plant. Same plant with an identity conflict. Here is a good write up on it. When I bought it , it was P. longiflora and friend told me that the real P. longiflora was red. LOL. Now I wast the real one. I still can't get the new name on my tongue. Most people still know it as P. longiflora.

I ought to go thru and take some pictures from the Chihuahuan Desert Garden at UTEP, which has a great plant collection. Will have to go before it gets too hot.

You guys know UTEP? It's a really interesting campus -- based on the architecture of Bhutan, and they're been doing so much recently to add to and modernize the campus, including lots of new native landscaping.

No, I know nothing about UTEP. How interesting about the architecture. It's beautiful. Makes me want to know more about Bhutan too. We'd love to see more pictures of it and the new native landscaping!
