Design Dilemma Storage & Closet

convert second floor linen closet to washer/dryer closet

The linen closet is 26" wide, specs call for 27" stackable washer/dryer width plus 1" clearance on each side. Contractor says he can gain a few inches by taking out drywall/plaster (1961 house) on the inside of the closet and turn 2x4 studs sideways without destroying bedroom walls on other side of closet - is this possible? What about the base and top plates - will they need to be removed, or just trimmed long-ways?

If your contractor says he can do it, don't overthink it. Those closet walls aren't bearing walls, anyway.

Actually one of the sides of the closet is a bearing wall ... I think. It's on the second floor, immediately below it on 1st floor and basement is load bearing wall. Is it considered a load bearing wall if the only thing it holds up is the attic? It's in the center of the house.
