LR ordeal 99.9% complete; need wood color advice

last modified: 10 years ago

Except for some trim inside the new coat closet, the long-lamented LR project - after two contractors, several stops and starts, and 11 freaking months is finished. Finished is good.

I am happy with the room - not rolling on the floor with glee - but very happy and so relieved the mess is finished. I am ecstatic with joy over the closet!

Now I need to pick the furniture, starting with a TV cabinet of some sort.

The small room is an ocean of oak. The 60+ years-old original oak floor was stripped, sanded, and refinished. We did not use stain; it's just "oak colored oak," very light. I love the floors.

The trim around the two windows, front door, and closet door is also oak, in a color as close to the floor's as possible. The front door and closet door are darker oak. The dining table and chairs, at the far end of the room is also oak.

Yep; drowning in an ocean of oak.

We will be getting a flat-screen TV. I want a cabinet/stand/something under it to provide storage for cable boxes, DVD players, iPod player, oversize books, etc. I also want the flat top of "it" to be a display area during the Holidays.

It needs to have legs, or be off the floor, so the dogs can retrieve their own lost tennis balls. It will fit either on the 11'10" north wall, with a doorway immediately to the left; or on the 12' west wall with a doorway to both the right and left.

I thought of using an antique buffet, one with legs, but it may be a long time before I find the right one in this isolated area. I also saw an entertainment area made by mounting kitchen type cabinets on the wall, leaving a gap at the bottom, and adding a nice top of either wood or stone, and mounting the TV above that.

If you were going to add a stand/cabinets/buffet for a storage and TV area, in an oak-on-oak room, which wood would you want? LOL There will probably be two other tables/small cabinets in the room, along with a recliner, two club chairs, and possibly a small loveseat. All to be decided on later.

The walls are a light sage green, if that makes any difference. Should I add more oak? Hickory? I'm not into black or white painted furniture, and chrome, glass, and mirrors are a no-go, too.

Everything is still a mess, but this shows some of the colors. The walls are not this dark or dull. That's the new front door in the middle of the floor. The TV cabinet will go on either of these two walls.

I think I would not want more oak. I like when a room is filled with at least 2 or maybe even three types of wood in different tones but working together as in warm or cool tone woods. We have dark stained oak flooring and are having a cherry wall unit built to house the tv, as well to have place for some decorative items.

    Gorgeous floors!
I'd probably go with a darker wood tone, but I'd say pretty much any wood would go.

I'd go with a darker wood, or something painted. I like the idea of floating cabinets :)

There's this metal media cabinet at West Elm (also a smaller one for less money). Would it work?

Oh! very pretty! Looks great with the wall color too. There is NOTHING wrong with oak, it is an easy wood to live with and I love how you went natural! IMHO oak seems to get a really bad rap and I don't quite get it. It is such a durable wood and to me, it has a very warm and homey feel to it. We installed oak floors, medium in tone throughout most of the first floor and bought a tv console in a dark tabacco colored wood from Costco. Their cabinets tend to have cleaner lines but they are not contemporary or too traditional. Ours is solid wood and came with pull out shelves and soft close drawers and doors. You can't beat the quality for the price and Costco is having some kind of a home event with new furniture items in May at least in our area. The selection and prices in the store are better than they are on line. I can take a pic of ours for an example if you're interested. Either way, congrats on getting this far with it, it looks lovely!

I would probably put the tv on the far wall. Putting a tv on a wall facing a window can be really hard to watch. Having said that - what are your plans for types of furniture and furniture arrangement. I might consider a dark wood with a hint of red - mahogany type or perhaps cherry wood.

Darker wood or a painted finish, or, I really like the the metal one Awm posted, it would be great with your ceiling fan.

Well, I'm not a fan of oak, but I'm in love with your floors, too. They look beautiful in that picture!

I like the idea of going darker with the furniture wood - and I, too, like the metal one Awm posted. I'm seconding the idea for the TV on the far wall if you can make that work, though I see it might be more challenging with layout.

Thank you everyone. My house is very plain, old, and tired. I'm trying to make it "homey" and "nice." Once we get the "sun porch" finished into a "four seasons porch" it will be our main living room. (In maybe two years?) Since it has 10 windows, a pretty view, and will have a small wood-burning stove, I see us spending most of our time there. This green room will become a waiting-for-dinner-to-appear and visiting-with-the-girls room.

Steph2000, Thank you; I love the floor. It's had a tough life and is original to the 1952 house. The same wood is in the hallway and two back bedrooms, now our "office/den" and "sewing room."

The TV on the far wall does make the most since, but while the room is empty I've put a couple chairs on that wall and it really opens up the room. It's so long and skinny. Because of the doorways and all, there's not really room to make a full-size sofa work. I'm seriously thinking of having DH's recliner (non-negotiable), my glider rocker, and two matching swivel recliners or high leg swivel chairs in the room.

I thought of a bank of low bookcase cabinetry along the back wall, the two matching chairs pulled forward in front of it, with an end table between them. I'll have to draw it out later on.

BLFenton - the closet and front doors have a darker, reddish undertone. I had thought perhaps the TV cabinets could echo that to pull the darker to the other end of the room, too.

Lukiirish - I would love to see your cabinets.

AWM and NoSoccerMom - I love both of those styles, but I think I want wood...and I must have solid doors. The room is so small I'm trying to reduce visual clutter.

Here's an idea I snagged from Pinterest, but I was thinking of making it from Hickory cabinets. Any thoughts on this. (And what if the inside was painted with a dark, royal purple that echos the mat of a photo near the breakfast table???) I want more room left of the TV so it doesn't seem squished like this one.

My room would resemble this in that I have a large window to the right of where the cabinet would be, but not so close, and an open doorway to the left. I think you'll have to click on the picture to see the "after" shot.

Here's the south end of the living room...still a work in progress, but at least the air compressor is gone.

The door handles are temporary. I couldn't decide on new ones so we put the old ones on the new doors until I have time to choose.

I want a long, low bookcase/cabinet/something to sit perpendicular to the closet door centered under the area where that picture is. I want it to hold either books or DVDs. It will hide the "seam" where the floor refinisher had to patch new wood into an area 4'x5' that had been filled with granite tiles. They had to go.

Just to the right of the purple picture is the 5'4" opening into the kitchen.

Geez, no more oak in that room! I'd consider changing out the dining table and chairs. Also, IMO if you want to make your newly remodeled room look instantly dated, go ahead and use the kitchen cabinet trick from Pinterest.

Yuck. Use the wall mounted Besta from IKEA. It's very flexible, inexpensive & easy to install and reorganize when changes are needed. All these pics are of Besta.

BeverlyFLA - The table and chairs is in this room for a limited time only. Once the Sun Porch has morphed into a four-seasons family room, the table, and the house plants, is going out there.

We're having a window seat made that will span the width from the right side of the closet to the kitchen wall on the left. There will be a narrow table in front of the seat.

I can see cabinet arrangements 1, 4, and 5 possible working. I would want the lower cabinet higher on the wall, taller, and with no or minimal legs. I'll check them out.

The one thing I hate about Ikea is the white pictures. The last time I tired to buy something from them I simply gave up. They showed white cabinets against white backgrounds. I simply cannot "see" the items they are wanting to sell.

The TV wall is 11'10" wide and there is an open doorway to the left. The doorway butts right up to the TV wall with only about 3" between the doorway and corner.

But seriously, what is your view of the Pinterest cabinets??? LOL (I love the honesty!)

I really like the cabinet configuration that you posted from Pinterest! Those IKEA set-ups would dramatically change the look of your home.....far from being warm and cozy! For me, personally, I could not live with those IKEA looks .

I think that your thoughts with the chairs and bookcases will look great!

I usually love Beverly's suggestions but I think the Ikea look is way too modern for your vintage home and the furnishings you've shown and propose to add, unless you really want to go MCM with it all. I think the kitchen cabinet unit looks fine, esp if you paint it white, or use a lighter wood. With hickory, if you are putting chairs in front and stuff on the shelves, it could look really busy. I think whatever you do, it should kind of fade into the background,

I also like the kitchen cabinet look in your room. I dont care for those ikea configurations.

Caroline, I too have a long narrow living room which is 12x24. It has just one solid wall which is one of the longer walls. I would have loved to do what you are contemplating with a large wall unit, we even have the billy bookcases with doors in our basement to do it with, but one reason I didn't go in that direction is because of the floor space the units would have eaten up, thus making the room appear even skinnier than it already is. Secondly, it would limit the way I could arrange furniture in the long term if I had an itch for a change or we got new seating. Instead we went with just a console, it has storage but probably not as much as you seem to be wanting. I do love it though. I like that it can be moved around and will fit on any wall, I also like the style and wood color which is warm and comfortable. The darker wood also works with our oak floors. We got a sectional which helps to define the space a bit and give it that cozy feel, but it too has it's limitations. Maybe I missed it in one of your posts but I didn't see where you really described what your style is, hickory and oak give me a more eclectic vibe so maybe a console like ours would work, I dunno. I felt sad to read where you describe your house as plain old and tired. Giving a house new life is a lot of work, but when it's done, it is so rewarding! Here is our console cabinet which holds our 50 inch screen, We got it at Costco
