How much do electricians charge to install chandeliers/fans?

I have someone coming out to give me an estimate on Wednesday and I'm wondering what an average price would be. I've never hired an electrician for anything before, so I want to make sure their estimate is fair. I have two ceiling fans, two indoor lights, two outdoor lights, and some repair work, so I'm scared to find out how much it will cost. If anyone has had a light fixture or ceiling fan installed, I'd love to hear how much you were charged.

Minimum $65/hour (depending on area of the country - I'm not in a big metro area). I had 2 outlets installed in an hour (just a quick run down from light switches). Angie's List currently has a Deal in my area for 2 hours with an electrician for $99. If you're just replacing fixtures, have you considered DIYing those and getting the electrician just to do the ceiling fans (cumbersome/heavy), new installs, and the repairs? I've installed a 60-inch wide bathroom vanity fixture by myself...

Javachik - They told me they charge by the job, not by the hour. I wonder which is more common. Unfortunately, I'm not handy at all and my ceilings are 12'. I may learn to be handy after I get the estimate/bill :)

My husband is an electrician and charges $60 an hour plus materials (which he does not mark up.) That's his side job/weekend work rate. If you booked through the company he works for I think it's something like $90 for the first hour and $75 every hour after that plus materials (which they do mark up.) Hope that helps!

I think we get charged around $100 an hour--very HCOLA. I think it generally takes about an hour to change out a light fixture. But I'm a little hazy so this is just my best memory.

Materials are included in that for us. I mean we supply the light fixtures of course, but they don't charge us for wire or switches or whatever.

msrose - I don't even own a ladder tall enough to deal with 12-foot ceilings.

paid $150 to a handyman to have a chandy hung this fall-- it was too large/nice to have myself and hub hang... I thought that charge was a little high, but i just wanted it done!

I’m an electrician I do work on side jobs for a chandelier I would charge 100 to 125 but u gotta remember putting up a chandelier is not put it up u gotta put a bracket that can withstand the weight consider that as well so yes best scenario call an electrician im talking for all electricians 95 percent of us take pride of our work cause we do the job and it leaves your name on don’t hire a handyman

@HU-228266474 - I rarely comment on anything, but your post really bothers me. For starters, I am a Handyman. I am licensed, bonded, and insured. I have owned my own company now for about two years. Previous to that I retired after 21 years in the Navy as a Senior Chief Aviation Electronics Technician. It doesn't look like you have the ability to string together a coherent sentence, why in the world would someone hire you? You have to be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in written correspondence. For what it's worth, I typically charge $75/hr. unless the resulting bill would be financially prohibitive. For bigger jobs like building/refinishing a deck, laying tile, etc. I charge a fair project price.

I use a handyman for that kind of stuff assuming no additional wiring is needed. I just had three light fixtures swapped out and it was $150. That included a little bit of time to confer about some future projects. This is in metro MN. In my experience electricians are a bit more expensive.

Just reminded now of msrose who was a pretty frequent poster - don't think I have seen anything from her for years. (unless she is using a different name nowadays.....anyone know?). @msrose

So Mr Mark of All just commented to be rude and boost his own ego. You'd think being retired from the military he would have better manners.

And we probably could have done without the electrician's cryptic post as well.

@salonva. Thanks for remembering me :). I can't put my finger on it, but I think things felt a little different after the switch from GW to Houzz and I kind of drifted away. I also finished decorating my new home and ran out of projects. I've been in my house for about 10 years now and I'm actually thinking about redoing some things, so maybe I need to start reading post again.

I had two ceiling fans replaced at one of the rental houses for $75 each.

I've always installed light fixtures - chandeliers, ceiling fans, outdoor wall sconces, etc myself. I have also designed these types of fixtures, and I wrote installation instructions for all of them. In addition to that, my brother studied electrical engineering for four years before he changed his major in college, and so he is good at helping me.

If you have installation instructions, you should be able to do it yourself, although in my instructions, I always say that it should be done by a licensed electrician, but that was just for liability purposes. If you do not want to do it yourself, an experienced handyman should be able to do it, but I would only hire one that I already had already had experience with.

I cannot help you with pricing, however, but if you hire someone that you have worked with before, you should get a reasonable bid.

@Allison0704 I apologize if you took my comment as rude. I thought I was very civil in my response. I am just tired of finding posts where people feel obligated to discredit the handyman profession. It wasn’t about stroking my own ego, it was about sharing that I have been performing maintenance for over two decades and that not all of us are grifters.
