Sorry, but you really want to go with stainless. If you do a lighter color sink, it ends up looking plastic and I don't think will be a timeless choice. I prefer the look of the composite sinks in laundry rooms, but in kitchens, unless they're a dark color, they just look cheap. Stainless is already pre-scratched, add in a grid at the bottom to protect it and you're good to go.

You'll need to call a plumber. It sounds like you have a blockage that's down pretty far and the plumber will need to snake or hydro jet the line. You may want them to run a camera down the line also to look at the condition of the line (and they'll be able to see where the blockage is also) since it sounds like you have an old house and with that comes old lines! Our former house was built in 1905 and we had a similar issue and it was discovered that our sewer line was old clay pipe and part of it had collapsed and we also had 2 "bellies" in the line (low spots) which resulted in us having to replace part of the sewer line. It wasn't cheap...around $2,000 for a 15ft section.

I have a large farmhouse sink with a ledge. I bought the grid which fits over the ledge and I put anything "wet" or damp on the grid including anything I hand wash - I do hand wash stuff including large pots and pans which make no sense to run in the dishwasher as well as delicate stuff that isn't safe for the DW. If I don't want to use the grid, it sits at the bottom of the sink. I also have the cutting board that fits on the ledge as well as a narrow "sponge holder".- My sink is from Havens Metal. They do custom sinks and I would imagine could build whatever sink you want to your specifications but I would think a large farmhouse sink with the grid should solve your problem. I used to have a wet counter and it solved my problem without an unsightly drying rack or the use of any towels etc. Alex Havens is the owner and was really helpful when I purchased my sink.
