I have good neighbors...

Came home to these beauties. Not a 'hoppy worm' in them. We have three whole asparagus spears up...I see pasta for dinner tomorrow.

Yummy. Lovely time of year...morels and asparagus. Dozens of dreamy combinations for breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Lucky you! I would love to find those in my area. I go hiking with Beau and morel hunting would be fun...but he would never eat one.

I hear about these all the time, but they are unheard of here in Southern California. Could you describe their flavor compared to crimini, white grocery store mushrooms, or other kinds? Jealous! We don't have ramps either. Nobody knows what they are. I do cuz I hang out on garden web. Is a ramp like a green onion? I have walking onions. Doubt asparagus grows here, but if it did, hubby wouldn't touch it. He is not a fan.

Suzi, I guess my best description is that morels are much earthier and have a stronger flavor than criminis. I haven't eaten a lot of other 'shrooms...they grow around here but I want someone I trust to show me what's edible. The shaggy manes and puffballs I have tried were....eh. And the fancy mushrooms at the grocery store always look pathetic.

Thinking ramps are an East of the Rockies thing (?).

    I AM TOTALLY JEALOUS!

Yeahwell, I am jealous of anyone who can grow citrus. And anything that takes longer than 60 days, lol.

LOL, Katie. I'm also jealous of anyone who can grow Meyer lemons, although we are finding just a few tiny black morels. We'll have the bigger white ones if we get some rain.

I'm not a fan, but my Mother loves the things, so any I find go to her. She's been telling me to look harder. (grin)

Not an asparagus spear in sight yet either, we've had a very cold and dry spring, and we just had that earthquake on Saturday, they say it was a 4.2. Odd things happening....

Yes, odd Annie...we had three 4.something earthquakes a couple of weeks ago. Hardly ever happens here.

I thought I'd read that Idaho had earthquakes recently too. In the grand scheme of things, a few items were broken from falling off shelves, a little property damage, but no big deal. It's the strongest earthquake in Michigan in decades, though, and the second strongest ever here, it's just so uncommon.

There too, for you, I think?

Morels were had in Southern California today, at a fine restaurant, as a major part of a lovely dish. :) I have issues with the eat local movement. I wouldn't want to have missed those!

What restaurant, where? Southern California reaches pretty far. Takes a long time to drive through it. Crossing my fingers that restaurant is within 2 hours of here. Enjoying the rain today.

Suzi, it's a great outing worth the drive, but maybe not just for the morels. There were a couple whole caps (I couldn't say what the cut up bits were other than amazingly delicious) in a dish made with "wild mushrooms", which could change on a daily basis given availability. Maybe call ahead to check. You'll need a reservation anyway. The Restaurant at the Getty Center. The scallops.

Btw, two out of three of the scallops had a bit of grit and were a little overcooked. The dish was really delicious, but only one of the scallops was spot on. But I'm picky. And I should say, they looked like morels, but being no expert, I could have mistaken them for a cousin. Since I knew they were just coming in, I figured they must be morels. :)

Ah, the Getty! Been there. Love the ancient world of Greece and Rome. Have not been to the restaurant. Thanks for the info. Depending on traffic, 2-3 hours from here. Thanks!
