Perfect fireplace built-ins -- please help me to design

Hi everyone,

We are in progress on a house addition build. We have started to draw up designs for the built-ins that will go on either side of our fireplace. We are using Scherr's RTA cabs so we are not using a KD or interior designer and hope that GardenWeb will help with the design component. The unit will hold a TV behind doors, components for music, speakers, DVDs and other storage. It will also have display of a collection of plates I inherited with smaller figurines (mainly Hummel figurines). We have read that it is a good idea to ventilate the components, and of course the speakers need to be behind speaker cloth to be useful. I also have read that remotes can work through speaker cloth. Hence, you will see we have used speaker cloth (likely will paint or get cloth in a light off-white or light grey colour). The door infront of the TV and the same side one on the other side of the fireplace will be bi-fold doors.

Here is what we have in the works. Comments are welcome on either function or form. Thanks in advance!

Carol

Here is the floor plan of the great room under construction.

Here is a sample of one of the plates. We also have some more brown based Hummel plates as well as Hummel figurines for display (ignore the grey sample beside plate)

Here is the proposed stone veneer for the fireplace. It looks less purple in real life.

Is this the main TV viewing room? The TV will be in a pretty awkward spot for comfortable viewing, even if hung with an articulating/swivel mount. If you are into sound (I'm not, but my DH is) there doesn't seem to be enough room for real speakers that would be placed in the correct position for optimum sound.

Is the base 16" deep? That might not be deep enough for components once you add in the plugs/cables behind them.

Will you put in a swivel pullout for the tv and components to the remote can reach them from all the seats?

I love your design and would like to do the same around my fireplace. I even have the Danish plates and have been thinking of how to display them instead of just pulling them out for dessert at Christmastime and for all our winter birthdays. Not only that, but I have a picture similar to the one you show...

    Yep, Tom Thomson!

    chispa,

Thanks for your comments. This is not the main TV area. There will be a man cave downstairs with a larger TV. We will put the TV in this great room on some sort of swivel arm so it can be angled towards the viewer. Not sure about speaker location as that is DH's job (and need) in our home too. He is talking about some ceiling speakers as well as some resting in the built-ins. Do you know what the correct spots are for speakers? Yes the depth of the deeper part of the built-ins is 16 inches. I will get DH to recheck that measurement and remind him about the space for plugs, etc. I appreciate the heads-up.

    bpahhome,

Thanks for your help and kind words. The TV will go on a swivel/pullout arm of some sort. It would be great if the remote can work from most seats -- but that may not be possible. Too funny that you have those Danish plates too. I inherited a large collection of those blue plates plus hummel plates and figurines from my Mom. I am trying to find an attactive way to show them off in this new build. Your picture is lovely and a Tom Thomson to boot. Ours is an oil original, but not by such a famous painter. It was made by a Quebec painter some years ago and was also inherited from Mom.

Note the colour of the built-ins will be SW Alabaster and they will match the colour of the perimeter cabs in our kitchen. For those who are not familiar with SW Alabaster it is very, very close to BM White Dove (warm off white).

Just found this image on Houzz. I think I like this metal mesh more than speaker cloth. Anyone used it before? Do remotes work through this mesh? On the Houzz site it says it is available at Home Depot. Not sure if it still is or ever was in the Canadian Home Depots (my area).

Any other suggestions on the looks or function of this unit?

DH says he will put a sub woofer in the closet that is nearby (closet will have shutter like doors so sounds gets through). He has plans for two small speakers over the china cabinet that is across from the fireplace (DR is across from the Great room but not shown in floor plan). So we can have some sort of surround sound.

I've done a couple of these. I would check the depth -- although components are shrinking, they are still pretty bulky (and hot). Also allocate enough room for a powerstrip. We have 21".

Our TV is on an articulating swivel mount. It works fine when the audience expands and the viewing angle needs to be improved. Just make sure your max depth is not too much. The recess also has a false back so that it is only about 8 inches deep -- since you have doors you can do some sort of mount extension.

We used speaker cloth, but those grates look nice. Our components are behind glass X mullion doors.

Thanks Gooster for your help. The depth of the cabinet for the components space is less than yours at 16 inches. We will double check again to be sure. Do you not find 21" roomy depth wise or just perfect? Good point about space for the powerstrip, cords etc. We are going to increase the depth of the top half of the unit to 11 inches. I like the idea of a false back for the TV so it does not get lost in the hole. We might put a false back on the plate shelves too. I think the cupboard on the left of TV would be better at 11 inches to accommodate books.

Excellent comments, Gooster. We will need a stong back to our TV cabinet too. Glad you mentioned it. The components will go in the drop down drawers in the base. I don't think we want full depth for the base, but will be sure we have all the depth we need. The good thing about Scherr's is their RTA are fully custom, so we can have the depth we want (and the charge is very similar to standard sizes).
