Sorry I took so long getting back here to respond cba. We moved, but are still in the process of getting everything fixed up at the house we moved from, and haven't taken it down yet. (Never move in winter, sigh...)Still haven't found any answer as to whether it can be shortened, though. We have a very sunny deck at the cottage which I KNOW will be very hot in summer! I would advise that you wait until summer to see whether the sun runs you inside from a too-hot outdoor area before you commit to removing all the frames. You might find that replacing at least one of the three awning fabrics is worth it for an outdoor area you can actually enjoy. Since you have three you can choose the best of the three frames for the area you need to shade the most. (Taking the frames down shouldn't be too hard for a handy person: the guy who does our landscaping offered to remove it and patch the holes if we gave him the frame. We might take him up on that.)Those frames, if in good repair, and especially if they are push-button-retractible, are pricey: maybe you can sell two frames to get the money to have new fabric installed on one of them? (Or sell all and invest in big umbrellas?)

The reflection in the front is from the edge its a bullnose and is reflecting the light at the camera on a different angle than the top. uni black is specific to black stones especially absolute black its used to blend repairs and match edges to the tops of black stone. used on other stones it comes out as a nasty film and on this persons counter top which is Ubatuba it would fill all the micro cracks and make them look purple. The tops were already once installed so there was no need to dress the top of the seam a second time (chances are they didn't have to the first time either). Lets say they did, Ubatuba is soft and works very easy blends really quick with a ten oxide buff. They would never have had to hand grind below the resin heck they would have a 3/4" thick counter top at the seam. I am now replying on my computer not on my phone and I can really view this picture in all its horror! its burned really bad I wouldn't be surprised if there was texture like a crackled feeling where its burned if that's the case ager wont work. if its not textured I would let them try the ager you have nothing to lose just be there when they apply it the results will be instantaneously and you can either give them a thumbs up or a kick in the butt out the door and tell them not to come back unless they have a new top.

The paper would be ineffective as a "moisture barrier" and would not have been intended as such. Applying any vapor barrier over a 2' patch would be absolutely ineffective in this situation. (You have not explained wether you are over a crawl space or basement. Or if it's over a heated space or not). I would be more concerned about the finished depth and adding something similar to keep the boards surface flush. You could add a layer of two of Rosen paper to build up the sub surface in this case, but (15lb.) roofing felt is what they would have used back in the day.
