The swing gate pictured is probably not going to work in the two feet available between your house and the sidewalk. Many of my clients don't want to see the air conditioning unit either! The open screen of the door shown will allow air flow for the AC unit as well...consider a sliding gate that opens to cover the AC unit when in use for the garbage, just make sure it can go the other way for service to the air conditioner. On thing more...please don't use interior knobs such as the one shown for exterior gates...the parts are not weather resistant (generally exterior knobsets are made out of brass and or stainless so they don't corrode. There are many, many pieces of real gate hardware that will do the same job for a similar cost and last a lifetime. You may be able to use wood lattice as opposed to the custom steel gate. Set the lattice high enough so that a hanging barn door track will allow access and support the sliding screen...and not be a head banger.
