BRAND New Gardener, Meyer Lemon Tree Help!

Hello all. I have started gardening just about a week ago. I bought a 3 year old Meyer Lemon tree online about a month ago. It was repotted in commercial high grade potting soil right when I got it. I have a few questions about the plant.

1. How come it is not nice and bushy like the trees I see online? It is just one long stalk. It is starting to grow off the sides, but only on the top, what about the bottom? Will it help if I take some of the fruit off? When do I take them off?

2. I have not yet gotten a straight forward answer. How often do I water the plant? I have asked everyone I know. I live in zip code 11021. The moisture meter seems to not work for me. I dip my finger in and it can still be moist after a week, but I am told to water twice a week since the plant is outside. How much water should I be giving? I give 1.5L

We will start with those 2 questions for now. I will post photos.

P.S. I have started little grapefruit seedlings using the baggie method. They went in the soil 2 days ago. How often am I supposed to water that?

Thanks!
Jon

It looks very young. It will grow branches as it gets older. Let it dry out a bit before you water it again. You can stick your finger in the pot to test for moisture but the pot will also be a lot lighter in weight and that will also let you know it is time to water. It does not really look like it is 3 years old but i dont know.

Here is a pic of my variegated lemon tree. I think it is 3 years old too. I got it from Home Depot

about 6 weeks ago. The trunk is about 3/4 inch thick. It is putting on tons of new growth. New leaves and new flowers. It LOVES the sun.

The website said they pruned it beforehand to prepare it for shipping. I don't know...
    That's what they said.

I still don't get it. How much do I water. How dry should it feel? Just a bit cold to the touch? Or completely dry? More moist? Also how much do I water? Till it starts dripping out the bottom? Half that? etc...

It doesn't feel dry even after a week it still feels a bit moist so I should wait longer?

Also, its in kind of a big pot for its size, so i dont thing you will need to water more than once a week. But the weather will also play a part on how fast the soil gets dry.

Yes, wait longer. Since it is still small it wont need a lot of water.

I was told if the leaves are not firm and look like they are wilting down a bit I should water it more. That seems to happen sometimes, even though the soil is still moist. Please advise

Also, should I mix the soil with some sand to improve drainage so it does not hold so much water? The soil I have drains OK now but maybe sand will make it drain more? Will that be better?

    Sorry for driving you bananas

The soil looks like it has perlite in it.

I think the older leaves will curve down a little.

When the leaves are wilting and you water it, do they perk back up?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not over water that plant and stress it out. A pot that big with a plant that small will not need to be watered more that once a week. I do have some plants that use a lot of water up but my citrus plants are not like that. I have a small orange tree/plant that was neglected and barely watered over the winter and it is doing fine and putting on lots of new growth.

Does the area where the pot is sitting get several hours of sun?

there is pearlite in it. Not like I know what that means...
uhh, I do believe the leaves get a little firmer and heavier after I water the plant, but that can just be my imagination.

OK, so I will not over water. I would like to now know, is once a week too much? If I stick my finger in and I feel any moisture should I still water? I feel like this is so complicated.

Yes, it is in full sun. Lots of good sun, on a sunny day of course.

Should I re pot it in a smaller pot? How will that benefit me?

If you need more pictures or anything let me know

Perlite is the white stuff in the soil. It helps with drainage. Do not go by a schedule.

If the top few inches are still wet than wait to water it. when you lift that pot up it should be heavy once watered. When it needs to be watered the pot will be lighter in weight.

You should be fine leaving it in that pot. With the plant being so thin you might be able to wait up to 10 days to water. But it also depends on how hot the weather is.

How thick is the trunk on that tree?

I would say the trunk is 1/4" thick.

I believe I have been overwatering it. Many of the leaves become curled and feel brittle and breakable. I don't think it goes away when I water it more (a sign of overwatering). I thought it was from the cooler weather. I will water no more than once a week now, as opposed to twice a week. Or even every ten days. Depending on the situation. I will keep you all posted.

Should I add sand to the soil? Seems like the soil stays moist for quite some time, maybe too long?

I think it will be fine if you leave it the way it is.
