I'm a new dog Mom - now 4!

I wanted to wait to announce 'Ginger' until Sue's little Frenchie was OK, and I'm so glad she is.

I have only had Brittanys up til now, as my parents always had one as I was growing up. ONE at a time...

I was asked by the rescue org where all of my current ones came from, New England Brittany Rescue, if I would drive 2 female 'Brittany Blends' on the last leg of a transport from KY to ME a few weekends ago. At the last minute, something came up and the head of the org, who was going to foster Ginger, asked if I could baby-sit her for a few days. Well, as my sister said, this is how my BIL put it when he heard the news that I had adopted her, "Bobby
says you are good at driving the rescue dogs, but not good on the DELIVERY!!!"

Ginger probably has no Brittany in her, other than the colors of her coat, but at 16 pounds of pure love, I couldn't care less. My vet has guessed possibly part Papillon, maybe some King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, but the only way I'll know is a cross breed doggie DNA test, which I will have done, out of curiosity.

http://www.amazon.com/Mars-Veterinary-Wisdom-Panel-2-5/dp/B00U9AJB24/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1432921127&sr=8-2&keywords=dog+dna+test+kit

Introducing 2-ish year old Ginger, who after resting up from a 2 day trip from KY, has decided that she loves her big brothers Riley and Rooney, and older sister Jenny, and that SHE will be the boss. She came with this dog bed, and I plopped in the boutique tissue box so I could show people her true size.

Just being cute

Playing tug of war with brother Rooney, adopted last July.

I'm with maire_cate! She is just adorable, and so tiny! I just knew she was a Brittany....before I read your post that is.

My brother and SIL just lost their 15-year old Winston a couple of days ago, a Brittany they basically raised with my nieces since they are now 26 and 28. It been sad for them, but they knew the day was coming soon. I'm glad to have some doggie news to celebrate.

She certainly blends in with the rest of the gang. She is very lucky to be joining your family. Best wishes!

Have you or someone you know used the DNA testing you linked? I have been interested in doing this with my mix breed dog.

Outside, I also lost an almost 15 year old Brittany, this
past February. My wonderful, smart, always well-behaved Sam, would have been
15 on 4/15. I called him my angel dog as he NEVER, even as a pup, did anything
bad. Since I had had 4 of them briefly, since adopting Rooney last July, I knew
that having 4 would work, and this little peanut is so tiny that she
isn't any trouble at all, and like you've all said, so darn CUTE!

Ellendi, I haven't used one of the DNA tests before, but
have read lots of reviews on various sites, and I think it will get the info I'm curious about. One reviewer even mentioned that he was a biologist and
told a great deal about how it worked, and some have said they had the test
done again free of charge when they questioned the results. One nice thing is
that they will mention any health issues that breeds who comprise your dog may
    be prone to.

My baby was originally from WI, and DUMPED. The story that I got from the shelter worker there is that Ginger had had 6 puppies, and that 6 weeks later, the owners dumped her. The shelter worker loved her so much that she brought her home every night so she could sleep at her house! She is the one who named her Ginger. The former owners kept one pup and tried to sell the others. Soon the shelter got a call asking if they'd take the 5 pups. Grrrrr...

Of course they did, and all were adopted. Ginger was already on the rescue route then, I'm happy to say. I think it's fate, as what are the chances that someone in Maine (me) could end up with a little girl from WI, via KY?

Here are some pics of her pups that the shelter sent me. The last one - black and white - is a bit of a mystery, just like my little girl is! Ginger has a bit of black on her ears, tail and these spots on her tummy in the last pic below, relaxing on her back. They all sleep on my bed with me, and every one of them likes to cuddle during the night. In the winter that will be great, but with the hot, humid nights we've had this week; I'm glad I put the AC unit in one of the windows earlier this week.

Welcome Ginger! She could not have found a better home, one that will allow her to be the alpha dog! I used to do transport for New England English Springer Spaniel Rescue, which was mostly fun, but there were a couple that I would have liked to take home with me. Then I also fostered, and failed! Yup, I ended up adopting my first foster dog.

As for the DNA tests, my daughter adopted a shelter dog recently and had the DNA test done. Our suspicions were confirmed, Josie is part Brittany and part English Foxhound. She gets her keen intelligence from the Brittany line and her stubborn streak from the foxhound line.

Have fun with your new gal! Please post pictures as she settles in. Lucky gal!

She is soooo cute! Congratulations. Last week my DH called me and asked if we wanted a puppy! My instinct was no but there were 2 dumped at the bus stop, scared out of their minds so we kept one. I have no idea on the breeds but he is a cutie and my kids are the right age (17, 14, 11, 8) that they take care of most of the messes. They named him Olaf. The funny thing is the other family that took in his brother named their's Olaf as well.

Oh what a sweetheart!!! I don't blame you at all, who could resist that sweet face!!! I get so angry and upset when I hear about animal cruelty, how can people just DUMP their dogs! It's amazing how she came to you and that you are going to give her a loving home. I'd say she deserves it (and she does!) but really they all do, don't they? She's beautiful.

I also did the DNA test for my dog, I did it because of the funny way my lab holds her ears and figured it would be fun to know and it was, though the results were a bit surprising. It said that way way way back in her linage she has some Airedale or some other kind of terrier, I don't recall but most of her linage is show English and American Labs. I was surprised too that they could also tell that part.

So are you going to change your name to My4dogs now? Ha Ha!

Thank you all for welcoming this little girl. Bonnie Ann - thanks for the review of the DNA test! And to find some Brittany in yours, is wonderful, to me of course. They are such great family dogs, and between my late Dad and I, we've never had one who didn't love people and accepted all other visiting dogs with happy tail wags. My boys are 3 and 4 times the size of Ginger and they play wrestle many times during the day, but as wild as it looks and sounds, you can see that they are all really being gentle.

lukki, I read that they can go back 3 generations - who knows what I'll learn about her!

Tish, I'm glad you took in that pup, and the name Olaf is so cute. Could you share a picture of him? How amazing that the other family named theirs that, too! I work with people all across the country, and one girl in AL has adopted several dogs that have been dumped in her neighborhood. The most recent was shortly after Christmas, probably a 'gift' that wasn't appreciated, and she cares for them, has them neutered and gives them a wonderful home. 'Suzy', the Christmas one is all black, a mixture of what may be lab and something smaller with longer hair. Suzy is recovering from her recent spaying, and I've been treated to pictures of her and her canine siblings. The behind-the-scenes work that so many volunteers do to get dogs to a place where they have a better chance of being adopted is amazing.

Yep, that's what they did with ours for the detailed stuff, but they also give you information on what they see prior to that, they just can't determine when at least that was the case for my lab.

I'm just in for a brief water re-fill while doing yard work before it gets too hot and humid. I'd like to change my user name, but it was tough keeping it here on Houzz in the confusion of coming from GW, so I'll save it for posterity.

mdln, I live the 'doo' on top of your niece's head, and am glad she's a girl with those cute curls everywhere.

jcl712 - Yay- another Brittany! They are not all that common here, and if I happen to park next to one in a car in a parking lot, and it's the 'parent' is there, we always chat about our kids.

I have been getting email updates on the poor kid 'Jackson' being transported this weekend p from NC, and he is very frightened and nervous, and he's shy. My leg of the trip doesn't start til tomorrow around 6 PM, if it is on time. I don't know whether he'll be completely freaked out or so tired that he'll sleep, but my first glance of Ginger a few weeks ago, was seeing her on the LAP of the woman bringing her to my 'meet spot'. Her tail was wagging when she was handed to me and I got a face full of kisses! This is after she had been in 20 - 24 stranger's cars and not having met the drivers, of course, on a 2 day trip. I can't imagine what 'Thea', her travel mate, must have been like to get adopted by a driver on the way up! They must have been two very happy little girls.

I'll never buy another dog from a breeder - the rescues that I have, especially the 2 females, want to show me every day how happy they are to be here. My Jenny will be 13-ish this July, on the anniversary of the day I adopted her in 2004, when she was thought to be 2-ish. She cuddles, kisses and just from that day forward, has let me know that she is grateful to be here.

I'm going out to mow the 'puppy pen' now, after weed whacking it earlier. The puppy pen is reached by 2 doggie doors and is about 60' x 80'. Six foot cedar stockade fencing faces the street, but the rest is 6 foot chain link that allows us to look over the river out back. It has big oak trees for shade, and a wonderful place to relax reading in the summer, if I get a chance. It's very private, also hidden by trees from my front yard, and about 8 feet lower than the front yard. I think I'll 'open the pool' today, too. The pool is a 5' kiddie pool . Here is my sweet Sam, who I lost this past February, in it on April 14, 2012 - a year we had an early warm Spring.

And big brother Riley on the same day. They like to be in it as it's filling.

You can see why Sam needed to cool off - we'd been playing with his favorite toy - tennis balls.

Missed this while I was apt hunting in Pitt. Late to the party but had to say Ginger is adorable. (cuz you wouldn't know that if one more person didn't say it, right? ;) ) She had a precious litter of pups and I am so glad they all found homes.

All my cats and dogs have been adopted -- from the doorstep, so to speak, or a shelter, adn I couldn't have been hapier with them. I have fostered a few but have not helped transport yet. Might at some point.

Two new comments make Ginger, her brothers, sister and 'mom' very happy. Who wouldn't love hearing how cute their 'child' is? I've found she's not a fan of rain, and we've had plenty, much needed, in the past few days. My last check of the rain gauge is 3.5". Here's the river right now, at 8:35 AM today -

And a bit earlier, Ginger and brother Rooney -

And, with the toy that she arrived with in her 'travel bag'. I took it out yesterday and knew it wouldn't last long. I was right; it had a squeaker-pendectomy a few hours later and I had to do emergency surgery. Doggie is in recovery, but I fear a recurrence. I bought some Crypton fabric months ago to make dogs toys from, and after work today, I need to try to locate it and make some!

Barb, Tina, Irish - THANKS! She's tiny, but she packs a lot in that little body. She's the boss of the big boys, and she respects Jenny. She's smart, and I'll admit these past several days, where I have had hot chocolate and oatmeal here in Maine, having 4 of them surround me in bed has been quite nice! I can grab Ginger like a hot water bottle and hold her next to me. They ALL love to cuddle.

amck2, She IS an absolute doll and smart. She's a tomboy and LOVES to play hard with her big brothers. I saw her and Riley going at it the other day, and they were moving so quickly that I was amazed that I got this shot, where she looks like the shark in Jaws. What's funny is that it was noisy but gentle as Riley kept going back for more, while she 'attacked' from the dog bed below. Her doggie DNA test should be back next week, and I'm eager to see what my little girl is made of, other than sugar and spice.
