any info on this peice?

I am wondering if anyone may know the date this sideboard was made.I bought it off kijiji and would like to know when it was made before I refinish it.Any info would be helpful as I can not seem to find much on this piece,it has a silverware drawer in the middle cabinet behind the glass door. It also has the old bakelight handles. Thanks

It looks like the top of a break front. Do you have the bottom piece?

Hi maddielee.I bought the piece as is,now that you say that, I think it is possible there was a bottom piece at some point in time...lol...I was planning on stripping it down to the wood and painting it a teal green/blue and using it to house plants and books,i just wanted something really funky for my family room.I am in Canada and it is possible it was made by a Canadian maker, which seems to make it harder to find info on the piece,if I knew the age I would possibly change my plans for it and redo it as close to original as possible,it needs some work as someone drilled new holes for smaller handles and also put nails in the shelves inside,i am going to buy some maple plywood and make new shelves.I assumed it was from the 60s, but from what little info I can find on the internet it looks like it may be older than I thought.

I'd say it's simplified Art Deco from the 1920s-30s.

    Bakelite handles are the clue

Does it have short little legs? The little backstop pieces were to prevent stuff from falling behind it; I think it was a dining room piece, for china/glassware and tablecloths.

Sombreuil,it doesn't have legs...it does have a hidden silverware drawer in the middle cabinet area behind the glass door...I am thinking it was a buffet or sideboard also.

If you could find or make a stand for it, to get it back to usable height, that would be interesting

lazy gardens,i checked the bottom of the cabinet,it looks like it has been made to sit as is,it has a decorative piece along the front edge,i am going to start stripping the piece today and will decide which way to go when I am done,i don't think I will go with my original plan which was to paint it a funky colour as I thought it was from the 60s...lol...I will get it down to the bare wood,do the repairs and then decide...I would love to put it my kitchen now but I have no space for it...too many cat and dog food bowls...lol.
