I do it every time I pot up my container displays and have for years....as in more than twenty. Just try to figure out the appropriate useful dose for the volume of potting mix.

that's the only type of fert I use except for water plants . i don't mix it in just put in on top so i can keep track of the granules . Supposedly these will last 6 months maybe in a HP situation but outdoors with heavy rainfall my guess would be more like 3 months I like it because it's difficult to over do it have never had it burn. gary .

There is a difference between slow release and controlled release fertilizers. Slow release fertilizers are usually granular, and supply nutrients in a form unavailable to plants unless converted to something useable by the plant's physiochemical activities or acted upon by soil biota to convert the fertilizer ingredients into ionic form the plant can use.

Controlled release fertilizers are usually coated by a membraneous material and released in ionic form that is readily available regardless of soil biologic activity. Release rate of controlled release products is usually dependent primarily on temperature and thickness/type of coating.
