Jim, If you saw those green y white on ebay they might be photoshop. Lots of people change the colors of them with magic (photoshop) which is why you need to buy from people that we know are honest and that you are getting what you paid for when it blooms. Barb

Thanks for nice y thorough answer.

However, that brings up more questions. I have walked through many forests of naturaly occuring plumerias, in multiple locations, hot, to cool, dry to wet, salty to far from the ocean, And the flowers are all the same. Hundreds of trees, in costa rica, panama, nicaragua. I would have expected to see some differences. I guesss its a one in a zillion y they use that plant to derive others...?

Where i am going with this is while the "stock" white flowers are great i would like to get some other "flavors".

I am in costa rica importing is a pain in the behind. I would love to find a source here.

Jimmat- plumerias were exported from the Caribbean and Central America hundreds of years ago because cutting could make the sailing journey to the far east. Evolution and adaption brought on a greater variety of colors as these were desired for trade. Several decades ago Bill Moragne successfully crossed a red with a large white creating the many colored line of Moragne plumerias. Today, growers around the world and especially in Thailand, India, Australia, Hawaii and other tropical areas are crossing plants creating a vast number of colors, shapes and scents. On a smaller scale, individuals in the USA, Europe and other temperate areas are also creating new varieties. You may want talk to the Ag. people there in CR and see if you can import seeds. These offer no danger to soil or plants. Seeds do not guarantee the same look as the parent plant but a variety. The reds or rainbows are the best because they are from mixed genes. Whites and yellows produce mostly whites and yellows, unless they are from mixed genes like the Moragnes (Cindy, Julie, #23). Hope this helps. I do not know if Maui Plumeria Gardens can export from Hawaii to CR but they are one of the best sources for some established varieties. Google them. Also Florida Colors has a very good reputation. I also like Jungle Jacks in California.

Plumeria seeds are quite easy to germinate. Seeds from some varieties, such as Penang Peach, can bloom within a year. If I recall correctly, some guy in Malaysia got a Penang Peach seedling to bloom in 6 months.

Just a suggestion if you cant ever get plsnts imported. You won't have a name variety but Penang Peach seedlings tend to be quite colorful and bloom often. A lot of Jungle Jack varieties are offsprings of Penang Peach.

if you live in Costa Rica I am sure there has to be a colorful plumeria planted somewhere in a major town or resort. You may even find one in tge parking lot of a restaurant or bar. I would search the city and ask for a cutting from the owner.
