Please critique our kitchen layout, thank you!!!

Hello GW!

I posted a similar layout late last year sometime and got some great advice. We had our architect draw out the basic kitchen plans but I was wondering if you all could help me tweak and/or point out major flaws in the design. I so appreciate any help you can offer!

Appliance info -- pls feel free to comment on appliance choices as well:

Range: 48" bluestar with double griddle

Hood: Bluestar proline

Ovens: Miele steam oven and Bosch side swing oven

Microwave: Bosch undercounter

Fridge: 48" Subzero

Prep sink (drawn too small): Kohler 33" stages

Clean up sink: Franke Professional

2 Miele dishwashers

Undercounter fridge: ??

THANK YOU TO ANYONE WHO HAS TIME TO COMMENT!!

Oh and just to give you some perspective, here is the kitchen in relation to the rest of the house:

Looks like heaven. I think I would want the prep sink on the frig side of the island. I imagine myself running around the island to the prep sink side (above 13) with hands full of veggies, etc. Have fun!

Sounds like it will be an amazing kitchen! A couple questions...

Is there a reason you want your undercounter refrigerator so close to your main refrigerator? The advantage to having an auxiliary refrigerator is usually that it can be in another location.

Do you need all 4 seats at the bar and do you think there will be people sitting there often? The one across from the pantry seems tight with the pantry doors open, and that seems like it could be a busy corridor with the refrigerators and microwave drawer.

Nightowl and Ediblekitchens -- thanks for your comments! Nightowl, I went back and forth with the prep sink placement. The reason I put the prep sink across from the clean-up sink is that I want the prep sink to be close to the dishwashers. Also the I don't think I have room for two trash pull-outs. So the one trash will be next to the prep sink so I can also access trash from clean-up sink.

Ediblekitchens -- couldn't find another location for undercounter fridge! Is there a better location you think? Also, yes, I think people will be sitting at the island often -- my three kids and my husband...while I stand and slave away prepping at the island, lol. I'm trying to figure out a way to get a 5th seat at the island for myself, but that might be pushing it!

    Question:

Are the stairs in the bottom left to the garage? If so, is that the only doorway between garage and house?

Yes, the stairs are from the garage into the house and yes, it's the only entrance between the garage and house.

Your island is too wide. The walkways are too narrow. You probably want 50" walkways, especially the high traffic one with the fridge on it. Counter to counter that is roughly 48".

Also, you are limiting yourself to granite with the island width. Most man made quartz products aren't wide enough to cover that island workout a seam.

I'd put the prep sink where you have the micro, the micro down father on the same side, shrink the width of the island, and ditch some UC storage there to fix the seating issue that creates.

With the nook so close, do you really need to seat 4? If not, 3 would be much better.

Is it not important to place the prep sink next to dishwashers? That's what I was thinking with the prep location. Yeah, Mama Rachel, see your point about island seating...3 might be enough. Do you think I need 50" walkways on both sides? Thanks!!!

I like nightowl's suggestion to put the prep sink on the back side of the island, and if you do that, the aisle widths will work better. (Although I think the island could be 48" wide and not lose any functionality.) I moved the MW drawer to the bottom wall, and moved the UC fridge over--now you have a nice snack/serving/breakfast area with the UC fridge/MW and a water source. I put a small trash pullout beside the sink, for prep debris, and for MW generated trash.

If you want the prep sink close to a DW, consider a DW drawer (or a DW) in the prep area, although it wouldn't be a big deal to slide your prep utensils across the island to be loaded into the clean-up DW. Moving the second DW would also leave a nice secondary prep area in the corner between clean-up sink and cooktop, in case someone wants to help. (Almost forgot---now you can visit with family and have a nice view through the kitchen window while prepping.)

The fridge seems to be drawn smaller than 48".

With this plan you could also consider flipping part of the fridge wall, to make the fridge more accessible to anyone coming from the living areas of the house. In that case, would you still need the UC fridge?

This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't want a main traffic area running through my kitchen. I would rather not have to deal with the passersby when I'm trying to cook, YMMV.

The biggest problem I'm seeing in your current layout is that you have no place to set down hot dishes coming out of the oven. You'll have to carry them through the main traffic area and land them on the counter next to the range or over on the island.

    Something like this?

Thanks for the comments! A lot of good points to think through tonight. Agree with the points about the main traffic area running through the kitchen and landing space for the ovens...hmm....

Also as Mama goose suggested, would love to prep with a view!

Another idea would be to move the mudroom entry across the W/D and have the range at the bottom wall. I'm thinking a 48" island and 45-48 aisle in front of the range and only 3 seats.

    Something like this.

For trash I'm thinking something like this.

If you're willing to move the kitchen entry a few feet (6'?) toward the top wall, you'd still have traffic coming through, but it wouldn't pass by the ovens and fridge. In this plan you still have a snack center on the periphery, with the ovens close to the cooktop. You still have a view while you prep, and a second prep area by the clean-up sink. There's room for a small appliance in the corner between the cooktop and ovens. (Forgot that the fridge is drawn too small--the pantry on the right of the fridge might need to be a pull-out, or make each pantry smaller.)

In the laundry area there's room by the W/D for a short counter over a pull-out for storage. This close to the kitchen sink, I'd skip the sink in the mudroom/laundry.

I wanted to post this plan, but also want to say (and I'll take the hits) that I don't think the ovens in the original plan are much of a problem. You won't be carrying hot dishes--with the oven door open and racks extended, you'll be pivoting in a 3' arc, to set them on the end of the counter by the cooktop. Turn the other direction, and you can use the island as landing space, if you have more than one hot dish. Ditto for anything you want to set down long enough to open the oven for loading. Just yell, "Oven's open!" before you use it. If you have small kids running in and out through that entry, you can always put a latch on the sliding door, and get in the habit of latching it when you open the oven. :)
