What material did you put behind the hood?

I see the glass back splash ends in line with the bottom of the cabinets and then you used a different material behind the hood. What is the material and why did you choose not to run the glass all the way up the back? Was it purely an issue of esthetics or was there another issue to consider?

the material behind the rangehood is just the painted wall, the reason for stopping the glass and not continuing behind the rangehood was just asthetics
