Help needed with corner of living room

Ours is a great room (measuing about 42

x 22 at its widest and 18 in the living room portion), one half of which is the kitchen and dining room (so about 21 x 22), and the other half of which is the living room (about 21 x 18). The style is genuinely industrial loft (some concrete walls and columns, concrete ceiling, hardwood floors). We have a taupe-ish modern sectional with a matching swivel chair, and the media cabinet you see, which is reclaimed wood and white laquer. Ceilings are 10'.

We have always thought we needed another chair for the corner, and yesterday found this mid-century-ish piece, which we like, but a) we're not sure the black leather works, because it is dark (would a color work better?), and b) because we don't know how to finish out that corner to tie it together with the living room.

We'd love your thoughts, even if your thought is that you don't like the chair at all.

This is the chair that used to reside in the space.

This is a close-up of the chair. It also comes in a medium blue nubby fabric, and can be ordered in other choices of color and fabric.

Here is a wider shot of the room.

The lamp will go (and therefore can be replaced - its an older IKEA lamp and sheds pretty much no light, plus its much too small for the space.

Thanks for your help!

SJ, I really like your place!!

What is that dark rectangle behind the candles? It would be helpful for me to see what it's like with the blinds up, such as the one on the right.

Is that a reading area, or mostly a place where guests sit?

I have no design skills and MCM is not my style of choice, so I'm looking at that corner and the chair from a perspective of whether or not I'm drawn to sit there. I think the black gets a little lost over there. Would you sit there and read the paper? Looks like there's good natural light. I'd want to put my feet up on something and have somewhere to set a cup or glass. More color I think.

Even before I read any of your post, my eyes zoomed in on that chair. I love it and think it fits in perfectly with your space. We have similar taste, so I'm biased. Where did you find it? It looks expensive.

Love your room and I like the chair. Colored upholstery fabric would make it more prominent, if that's what you want. I think I'd get a side table for it, with a large lamp, and maybe an appropriate style footstool/square pouf to make it more comfortable for reading.

Love the chair but seems to be a tad small. Need to see a picture of how it looks with your sectional/sofa. Maybe with a new lamp and side table it will fit in better. Even colorful throw or pillow on the chair would help.

Like anitamo, my eyes went right to that chair even before I read that your post was about it. Love the style (would love it even more if it were vintage not new). I like it in the black but blue might add color if it coordinated with your other colors.

Oh, we know it needs a colorful pillow at the very least - I should have taken the picture with one.

Anitamo, we got the chair at HD Buttercup, which is a store in LA and San Francisco that sells a wide variety of mostly non-name brand furniture, some new, some vintage, some one-off, some not. The chair is not inexpensive, but not wildly expensive either. In leather, on sale, it was about $900.

Linelle, that black square is unfortunately, the bottom of the door that goes to the fire escape. The chair is very comfy, so I could see sitting there to read if I had good light (natural light is no problem in this apartment, but artificial light is a huge problem).

I've attached an even wider angle photo to show the sectional and chairs.

I noticed the chair right away as well but was wondering if it was too small for the space. Now seeing more of the space I think it's fine. If you're not stuck on leather, it looks like there is a blue-grey in the area rug - what about something like that for the chair. If the medium blue is a tone of that colour that could work. But I do like the chair.

Thank you for the info on the chair. Great price.

What a wonderful room! I really like your chair. It looks stylish and comfortable, and easily portable if you want to move it temporarily (for example, to accommodate company).

Doesn't it need a table to set your book or mail or tablet on, beside your martini? And a bigger light fixture. Maybe coordinating with the one in the other corner (is that a pendant?)

Love your apartment and the chair, but I would like to see it in a color, perhaps the blue in the rug that Blfenton mentioned, to show off the beautiful wood. I think you need some contrast too since your sectional is dark. Agree a side table and lamp is necessary...ottoman if there's room and if you want one.

I think the chair needs a small table next to it to really fill the space and not leave it as a focal point. I love your space and think a pillow with the chair will look great!

Sj - The chair is so good with everything in the room! I do think it needs its front feet at least, on the rug. Is there a way to pull the rug over to the chair? The chair looks like it should stay where it is but the rug should move - KWIM? Do you have another side table that is bigger to use between the sofa and the chair? The one you have looks good but doesn't fill the area enough. Maybe two of the same but side by side. And to add a larger floor lamp...maybe something quite tall and on a tri-pod with a drum shade?

Great room - of course now I want a complete tour...

How about turning the rug the long way?

I really like the black chair there....

Thanks all. You know, I really think we need a larger rug. When we got this one (Overstock), the colors worked so well we didn't return it even though it's probably one size too small. It was "fine" until we put that lonely chair in the corner. But I'll try a small table and a large lamp first (as well as another color of the chair -- it's not final sale, so we can try the blue one out too)

I like the chair and think it fits in well. Do you want to draw attention to that corner? To me it looks like a chair you would pull up when you needed additional seating in the room.

I like the chair but I do think it looks a bit small for the corner. The orchid is nice, but how about a large plant/tree?

We brought home the blue version yesterday, and while the color worked better than the black, the black leather is a nicer piece of furniture, so we kept the black. I realized last night that in addition to adding a little table, floor lamp and large plant, it will also make a world of difference if we move the bus blind (which is black and yellow) and hang something colorful in that space so the chair doesn't blend in. Thanks for all your thoughts.
