itltrot's Master Bath Reveal

After over a year and half of remodeling plus several years planning on GardenWeb it is finally done. Well done enough to show off. I owe way to many people on here for their advice and time helping during different phases of planning and construction. Thank you!

Our master bath started life in 1971 as a claustrophobic, wasted space, dark and dated room when we bought the house in 2001.

With the help of family and friends we painted the dark paneling , spindles and vanity to give it a brighter look. We painted it a color that tied in with the gold faux marble formica and gold/yellow shower tiles. Removed the faux parkay looking flooring with some *gasp* carpet in the vanity area and linoleum around the shower and toilet. This allowed us to put off renovating the bathroom for many years.

In 2009, we stopped using the shower as the pan had a leak and started mildewing the flooring. It took a few years for us to save the cash to do the remodel, but we were able to start in September 2013. The room was gutted to the studs, plumbing was moved, electrical was redone, pocket door installed, new insulation and drywall was done. We leveled the floors and added radiant heating over a thermal break. We did as much of the work as possible including breaking the slab and digging over 12- 5 gallon buckets worth of dirt to allow the plumbing to be moved. We worked evenings and weekends as our time allowed which at times was slower than we would have liked. But it was worth all the blood, sweat and tears. And trust me there was plenty of all of them. We are absolutely in love with our new space. As you will see, I borrowed ideas from many from GardenWeb.

I also need input on the make-up vanity. I have left it white which I really like for applying make up but I don't like how it looks unfinished. I originally planned to add the same time as the shower to the two walls but now I'm thinking just paint it blue like the rest of the room. Opinions? Thoughts?

Wow. Double Wow. You did an amazing job and I can definitley see that all of your time planning this really paid off. And the tile work looks amazing -did you DIY or hire a pro for that? Have you used the pullout ironing board yet? I'm thinking of one like that for my closet so I am curious if you find it to be adequate - we do very little ironing so I think it will be OK for us. I just love everyting about your new space!

oaktown, thank you! We've been trying to include a picture or two of the house before as we redo rooms. It's a great conversation piece for sure.

numbers, thank you too. The tile work is all my DH. He did the install for my crazy ideas. He thought the herringbone was an awesome idea until about the 2nd row. LOL I love my little ironing board. I normally iron a shirt 2-3 times a week and this is perfect. I don't have to lug out the big board nor do I have to see it sitting out all the time because I didn't feel like putting it up.

WOW. The cabinetry and storage is amazing but your designers eye for artwork and window treatments really pull it all together! This bathroom is heavenly. This is one I will surely go back to as a reference point when planning my own. Thanks for sharing all the detailed photos! What are the total dimensions of the space?

Thank you rebecca! Room size is 11'6" L x 9' W in the shower area and 7' W in the rest of the bathroom.

Wow is right. I can't believe the transformation. And I love your storage solutions. Congratulations and enjoy it. I can see why it was worth it.

As for the makeup area, I would just paint it the blue. it's such a beautiful area as it is.

Ok, but I do have one question. Please tell me you don't normally fold your toilet paper over every time you use it. :)

Cpartist, haha. No, I don't fold the tp every time. It's something I picked up when I worked in the hotel industry. I do it for pictures or before guests for fun.

As others have said, WOW!! You did a fantastic job. I had those 80's turned posts in the foyer and great room in my previous home but wasn't lucky enough to have them in the bathroom too (lol). That was a cute idea to hang a before picture in the bathroom. I'm sure most people will not believe it is the same space. I love all your finishes. Everything works together so well. Its beautiful. Congratulations.

Let me add another WOW! The overall look is great and the details are amazing! Better than some jobs I've seen done by people who do it for a living. But then again, nobody cares how a remodel turns out in the end more than the people that live there.

And I really really admire how you saved up until you had the funds.

    Congratulations- Lisa

So nice!! I really like the idea of the "before" photo in the bath. I think I may try to do something like that myself.

Wow, great job and amazing transformation from the original. I also loved seeing your intermediate bathroom where you lived with what you had but made it more attractive.

And I agree - paint the vanity area same as the rest of the bathroom walls.

Amazing transformation! What great work you did! I vote for painting the vanity wall blue too.

Badgergal, we had the spindles in the living room/entry and both bathrooms. It was a happy day when I got to knock them out!

Southofsa, thank you. It was important to us not to get in debt to do the remodel. We do what we can to stay mostly debt free. Dang mortgage.

Alexamorrie, the in between definitely made the space livable. We owe much of that to my parents and brother. They helped make the whole house tolerable enough we could live there.

Looks like I'll be finishing the painting the weekend. :-)

Chisue, the joke with my friends and family is that I'm done and need to sell and start over. Haha. I plan to do some minor tweaks to the guest bath so I can post it. Then rest and enjoy all our hard work.

Beautiful and WOW! Congratulations on a beautiful design and execution! I am saving this for future reference (even though my bathrooms are finished, lol). I love the herringbone and accent tile. Everything is just lovely.

Congrats! That shower is beautiful and I love the backsplash accent in the nooks. I will be saving this as inspiration for my own reno. Thanks for sharing!

I also vote for the blue paint.

Wonderful transformation! Looks fun and relaxed, with sophistication sprinkled in. I love your wall art. I like the contrast. Such efficient use of cabinet space too! You did a fabulous job!

And I love Copen Blue :) I painted several rooms that color. You must have a lot of light because your's looks a tad lighter than mine. When DS2 came to visit he called it Robin's Egg. I found a robin's egg shell several months ago and Copen Blue is lighter than the egg shell but was a great coordinating color.

The vanity area: paint or tile what 2 walls? I thought you meant the wall with the mirror (one wall). I like the white for makeup too. But if you tiled it what tile were you thinking? The white? I don't think Id put the dark tile in that alcove. I wouldn't paint the cabinets either. Oh I went back and looked at the pic again. I see one side wall is a wall and not a cabinet. Ummm, could you hang more art instead of painting the walls? Of course paint is easy to change if you decide against the blue in there.

I have an ironing board like that too and love the convenience.

Enduring, you are one of the people I borrowed ideas from. The ironing board ideacame from you. Maybe even Copen Blue. Thanks!

Yes the wall the mirror is on and the wall to the left. I planned on using the same white tile as the shower. But I've been dragging my feet on the install. I do have some art to hang on the little wall but haven't found the frame. I'll probably paint blue this weekend and see if I like it. If not I can tile.

Thanks again for the positive comments.
