How to light this fireplace wall?

Hey All. We are redoing our living room ceiling including installing more recessed lighting (previous owners were lamp fans). The only existing recessed lights are 6" cans on a dimmer in front of the fireplace installed about 3' away from the wall. These had those wall wash grills (half circles) that were popular back in the day. We are thinking of shrinking these down to 4" and moving closer to the wall in more of a grazing than washing setup, to try to accentuate the stucco surface which is still in good shape.

The only concern we have with grazing is that there is an existing shelf
on the wall above the fireplace which we'd like to keep, and we are
concerned about wacky shadows created by going too close to the wall.
Is there a sweet spot which can get the best of grazing w/o the
downsides? If not, we may be best off with some wall washing gimbals or
something of that sort. Thanks for any advice!
