Windows 10 ?

Your ideas on the new Window 10 coming out. I have W/7 and do pretty good with that. Your feelings on the free downloads?

Thanks

Marie

Personally...I'm not interested. I, too, have Win v7.1 and use my system primarily for writing and research. I'm not a gamer nor into much of this current generations cyber interests so Win 10 would be wasted on me. Plus...I don't want to give up my right of refusal when it comes to updates and other Win control features. But for those who want all the new age glitz and glimmer without much work...Win 10 is probably right for them.

Im going to update the Windows 8.1 laptop I have. It's an Asus Zenbook that I bought to replace a Windows 7 Zenbook. But I'm not updating my Win7 laptop and desktops. There are too many unknowns as to how Win10 would work with older hardware and software. I updated the Win8.1 laptop yesterday (just updates, not the whole OS) and immediately went back to my Win7 laptop. I don't care for the touch experience on a pc.

Other things enter this decision too. I don't like Microsoft forcing me to have email and accounts I would not otherwise use. I don't like the idea of having to leave a Win10 computer on all the time so it can update itself, etc. I don't like devices that have 7 steps to turn them off. The Windows Store for apps is still pretty bare. I totally dislike the idea of forced updates; my Win7 desktop several times was unbootable after updates and was a total hassle to repair.

Im tired of spending my free time trying to figure out why Windows doesn't work. If the update to Win 10 on the new Zenbook fails or something ridiculous happens, I'll install Ubuntu and be done with Windows.

I registered weeks back but am holding off, for now, on upgrading. Please post your experiences.

If we do update to 10, Can we go back to 8.1 if we dont like it?

..I've just upgraded mine to Windows 10, from 8.1.... it took about one and quarter hours. Everything is fine, no problems at all, just that I really do not like Microsoft Edge, the browser that replaces Internet Explorer... in fact I hate it... there is an option in the settings to return to IE, and I do that now. Although I also use Mozilla and Chrome, but Edge is just awful !

I also removed a number of apps that I don't need, virtually all of them... one has to customise quite a lot to the way you want it, but this always happens...

otherwise, nothing to be afraid of...

TY for sharing your experiences. Anyone else?

I am using windows 10 right now and not having no problems. Windows Edge is working great love it, it runs better for me then IE.

I upgraded last night and it went fine, so far so good...

I'll wait until Linux-people figure out how to dual-boot Linux w/it.

I have to say I love windows10, love Edge and I really am so glad that they replaced 8.1 with 10. I surly will be keeping eyerything about it NO complaints.

Love W10 it's everything I expected and more, hope it comes to my other 3 PC's soon? Dh is anxious for it as well.

One possible downside to doing the OS upgrade is that hardware manufacturers don't typically update drivers for discontinued product models. Meaning, if you have an older printer or other peripheral that you use with your Win7 PC, there may not be an appropriate driver available for Win10 and that might prevent your continued use of it.

I have some such devices that I want to continue using, and as a result, I need to keep a couple of my home PCs on Win7 until those external devices (which are not easily replaced) die.

It's something to keep in mind.

I've Downloaded and Installed Windows 10 on 2 Older Acer Aspire 5742z-4601 and Lenovo G560 Intel Pentium 2.0GHz Dual-Core Laptops, w/ Windows 7 previously installed and both are running great. I've also Downloaded and installed Windows 10 on 2 Newer Acer Aspire V5 573p-6896 Laptops, Intel i5 1.6GHz - 2.6GHz Quad-Core Laptops, w/Windows 8.1 previously installed, both are running great.

Still waiting on the Upgrade to Windows 10 for my Acer Iconia W4-820-2882 Tablet w/Windows 8.1 installed, my Desktop AMD Phenom II 3.0GHz Quad-Core w/Windows 7 Pro installed and my Nokia Lumia 928 Smartphone. They all are eligible and I plan on Upgrading!

I really like Windows 10 so far. The only annoying thing I've found so far is that I had to Reinstall my Norton's Security Suite on all of them! For some reason they didn't transfer with the Upgrade!

I was told by a man that has a computer repair shop that he had been testing W 10 and he didn't think there was enough benefit to to upgrade. I was curious and upgraded at 4 AM the day it came out. I worked with it all day and I agree with him and went back to W 8. I don't like the fact that they download updates whether you want them or not. A couple of the techs in the forum I visited was worried about that. I did not upgrade my W 7 desktop.

Marlorena-z8 England- You can make Internet Explorer your default browser. Go to Settings (the purple wheel), then click on Default Apps on the left side of the screen. A list of apps will come up showing Microsoft Edge as the browser. Click on Microsoft Edge, a block of selections will come up, select Internet Explorer as your Default Browser. I tried really hard to like Edge, but finally changed the browser to IE.

    WalnutCreek...

..yes thank you for that, I managed to find this out by rummaging around the other day, and I've made IE my default browser, although to be fair, I'm finding Edge a little better athough there are one or two aspects I still don't like....

..I must say there are a lot of settings that need tweaking, especially for privacy issues... I have uninstalled a number of unwanted apps and toggled to 'off' quite a few settings that are automatically 'on'... one really has to search out these things... but I wouldn't go back to Windows 8.1 though....

..I also had to remove and reinstall Norton 360, as the live update and scanning process wasn't working on it..

I uninstalled most of them, unpinned others. There were only 3 left when I finished. Then I put the things I use there. I worked with the start menu (tiles) a month or two and I really don't understand this new concept. If I am on the start menu and click IE it opens on the desk top. When I close it I am on the desktop. If I am in tiles menu and click on the control panel, it opens on the desktop. All of my stuff opened there, what's the point of having the tile menu? Maybe the apps that I deleted would have taken me somewhere else. I also got rid of Metro at the bottom of IE, I hated that big black thing.

I tried to install WIn 10 on a 2 N 1 Asus. The download failed 3 times, worked on the 4th try. Then the device would not connect to wifi. I let it sit for a few hours, came back to it, and it had connected. Not knowing what to do I hit enter, and Win10 began installing. I went through the setup screens using the touch screen and onscreen keyboard as the physical keyboard and touchpad would not work. When finished still no physical keyboard or touchpad. So after 2 calls to Microsoft and 4 calls to Asus it's rolled back to Win8.1. It seems Win10 thinks the laptop is a tablet. Asus and Microsoft had no other solution.

I did the upgrade last night from W8.1. All my applications are working as well as my peripherals. I admit I haven't spent too much time with it, but at first blush I am not impressed after all the hoopla. More time with it could change my position.

I have only one suggestion, change your system power settings to never before upgrading.

I just took my Windows 7 Home on a five year old Acer to 10 using the media creation tool found here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

I expected it to make me burn the ISO but it didn't. It just downloaded the ISO and did the upgrade, which went smoothly. Slow but smooth.

During the setup phase I choose "custom"(or however it was worded) and switched pretty much everything to "Off". The defaults were "On". On another screen, I cleared a bunch of check boxes to keep it from changing my default programs.

Mostly I just wanted to see if it would blow away my GRUB menu(I dual boot Linux). It did not.

Honestly, I probably won't use it much but it doesn't look bad to me. If I were a Windows user, I'd likely welcome it. Just my initial impression though.

Good to know Richard as that was my question. Doing it that way do you still have the option to revert to Win 8.1?

Yes, back to Windows 7, which is where I started.

Richard, I'm surprised. It didn't overwrite your grub boot loader w/the windows loader? Most of what I've read so far says that it will. Maybe you checked "off" the things that would cause that (like secure/fast boot)? This is the issue I've been pondering.

I triple boot W7 w/Puppy & Mint Linux, but my method uses the windows BCD program to bring up the multiple boot menu, then grub takes over on the chosen linux partition (during linux install I chose the designated linux partition to install grub to, NOT the first (windows) partition).

Edit: Forgot to ask -- does the tool leave you the Win10 iso file so you can burn a Win10 installation/repair boot-DVD(s)?

Well, at least in my particular case, on my particular machine, it did not. I was prepared to reinstall GRUB if it did and even made a fresh Linux backup, just in case it went really wrong. But it went fine.

I didn't search for the iso. Maybe it's there somewhere?

Easy enough to grab the iso with Linux though...

Thanks Richard, upgraded my Surface Pro two days ago, and last night my Win 7 Laptop which I will play with more tonight.

    @millworkman Good to hear.

@beng12 The things I checked off(all were on by default), with a little help remembering from: http://www.7tutorials.com/how-install-windows-10

    *Customize settings*

    (First screen)

    Personalization

    • Personalize your speech, typing, and inking input by sending contacts and calendar details, along with other associated input data to Microsoft.
    • Send typing and inking data to Microsoft to improve the recognition and suggestion platform.
    • Let apps use your advertising ID for experiences across apps.

    Location

    • Let Windows and apps request your location, including location history, and send Microsoft and trusted partners some location data to improve location services.

    (Second screen)

    Browser and protection

    • Use SmartScreen online services to help protect against malicious content and downloads in sites loaded by Windows browsers and Store apps.
    • Use page prediction to improve reading, speed up browsing, and make your overall experience better in Windows browsers. Your browsing data will be sent to Microsoft.

    Connectivity and error reporting

    • Automatically connect to suggested open hotspots. Not all netwoks are secure.
    • Automatically connect to networks shared by your contacts.
    • Send error and diagnostic information to Microsoft.

BTW, I'm not suggesting anyone should or should not switch off any of the things I switched off. Strictly my personal choices.

Windows 10 can use your PC to update other computers on the Internet?!

    http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-silently-uses-your-bandwidth-to-send-updates-to-others/

"Delivery Optimization is turned on by default in Windows 10. At no point
during the Windows 10 installation process are users asked about this,
which means that those with a restricted bandwidth don't get the chance
    to opt out."

Maybe it's because I used the "Media Creation Tool", or because I chose "Customize settings" instead of "Use Express Settings" but I did see that somewhere during the upgrade process.

I turned it off entirely. That's just me though.

..first thing I did was turn that off... or rather, make it local network only.... it's really crafty all this, and I suspect most people just won't bother...

You've convinced me not to upgrade. There is now an irritating popup wanting me to install W10 and it won't close unless I open it and click on the x. I can't stand having peripheral things like printers incompatible. We have a local computer dude who actually built my PC for me. I will ask him what he thinks of W10, but he usually doesn't like new stuff.

I generally run Linux. This started as an experiment but truthfully, I like it. Sure I had to flip a few switches to conform to my desires, but the way I look at it, at least the switches were there for me to flip.

Windows 7 had reached that point where it was starting to run slow as molasses. Upgrading to Windows 10 has given it new life. So at least in my case, I'm glad I upgraded.

Note to self... Image time... NOW!

    Delivery Optimization FAQs

A couple days into W10 and still not overwhelmed. Just maybe its because I was a satisfied W8/8.1 user. I can see where users upgrading from W7 could be enjoying the O/S. I will still give it more time though.

I was really looking forward to getting Windows 10 from 8.1 but now wish I did not download it a few days ago. I keep getting disconnected from my wifi every 15-30 minutes and it is very annoying. I have a Lenovo Flex laptop and I am thinking I might need a driver update or something and I have no clue when I go to the Lenovo website on how to do that. I am afraid of making a mistake
