So I bought 7 rugs...now I need your opinions please.

My dining room is really just one big hallway with five doorways. It is approximately 16 ft sq. the light fixture is offset to the patio doors. The patio doors have access to the backyard patio, which is a secondary outdoor area. This is a 10 x13 rug with a runner. I first had a 12 square and liked the size but not the rug.

So would you use

1 - the gold rug and a runner

2- spin the rug and have wood floor to the patios

3 - use the last rug which is 12' square and fits perfectly

I have other rug issues but let's solve the DR first

TIA

I like the last rug. # 3. I just don't think the gold rug does anything for the space.

I really like the last one. I like that there's multiple colors and you say it fits well. Very nice room and love the chandelier.

    16 sq. ft.?

Thanks akl and misformink. I did sort of like the last one but sent it back because the border had more of a pinkish tan color than shows in the picture. On the website it was more of a gold/yellow. That and they sent the wrong size. Meanwhile my daughter hated it. And loved the gold one. Right now I'm focusing on size and wondering if a 10x13 fits ok?

    linelle - sorry the room is 15'6" X 15'9" I guess 16 feet square?

If you had an hour between poting and saying you already sent the rug back, why are you asking? Doesn't seem like you really wanted any opinions. I agree with the other two replies that based on the little bit of that rug you are showing, it was the one with the most promise. The plain gold one doesn't do anything for the room or the room for the rug.

What size and shape table will you have in there? Any other furniture? A china cabinet or sideboard, buffet, etc.? That might make a difference on your size. It would also be nice to have colors you want in your chair seats, window treatments or to tie in from adjoining rooms picked up in the rug. Some of them, anyway.

I'm not a fan of the gold rug, for size or color.

I'd do one rug, or no rug at all. The rug plus runner doesn't work. I'd look for a 14x14.

I liked the blue one, don't care for the gold one.

@lascatx, I think she is just asking for sizing opinions.

I prefer one big rug, so of your options, I would find a new 12x12 if that is the size you like or slightly bigger. I do agree with PPs that the gold rugs don't seem to be enhancing your room. Maybe you can find a similar oriental/Persian to the one you returned in colors you like?

Since the light is off-set on the window wall and not centered in the room, i think a large square rug with an offset table might look odd. I don't care at all for the gold rug's color in your room, nor for the runner with it. I think I would prefer a rectangle or smaller square where the gold rug is, but the size would depend totally on the size and shape table you will be using and where the light is.

How far out from the window wall is the light? Is it centered on that wall? Any chance you can move the light?

Lascatz- Yes I was on my way home from the new house. I had to send the black rug back as they had sent the wrong size. Too small of a square. I can still get the 12 x 12 in the black patterned rug but my family members dislike it. 12 x 12 is difficult to find so I opted to try another size with runners. I will have a sideboard and a china cab in the room and it also is a main avenue to the kitchen.

jlc , Texan. theclose -Thank you for clarifying the gold isn't such a great choice. My DH said he'd like to see yellow in that room. So I was trying.

Olychick - The chandy is staying where its at as I will have a round table in the room. The table is offset as the room is a path to the kitchen. The table area is 10 X 16, The remaining side of the room is walkway to the kitchen and sideboard wall, which is why I thought of adding a runner. Guess I should have posted a floor plan.

Since you are asking for opinions I will give an honest one. The gold is just not the right color. It actually takes away from beauty of the room. And the runner just doesn't look right. I do think a floor plan picture or pictures of adjoining rooms would visually help.

Well I guess a 12 x 12 rug is the general consensus. I will send the other rug back if I cant find a different place in the house for it. I agree it is too gold. Actually it is more of an orange. I do like the rug construction. But the size for the room was the issue, as 12 x 12 is a rare animal, so I may get the original rug as it did look best with the walls but was loud. And a bit too tan...

I think I have a picture on my phone of the original rug with the table and chairs but the chairs will be changed out. The table is antique and 54"round, with a split pedestal that allows it to become about 9 feet x 54".

Here's the thing about dining room rugs. They look great when the room is empty, as in the picture. They look great when all the furniture is in place.

The big but is this: Unless the rug is large enough to leave about a 1 foot margin all around the room , the chairs inevitably get stuck on the edges because chairs need 2 feet to move back and forth in each direction. Alternately, if the dining room is very large and the rug is large enough to be an island for the table and chairs, that works.

I think the runner looks very good in the walk space. I'd get a really lovely one and leave the rest of the floor bare. The windows in the room are really pretty. I don't see a need to distract from that.

I don't think the chandelier is offset as to the windows -- it's just the angle of the photo. I think the chandelier is farther "into" the room -- toward the windows -- than it is toward the entry to the room, where the runner was, which is the walk-through area. In other words, I think the table will be centered in the room, so a square rug makes sense. You'll still need to make sure it works to allow the chairs to be pulled back, and allows for any other furniture in the room (table only? Or a server, china cabinet of some kind that will throw off the symmetry a bit?)

Rococogurl - you are so right

i definitely need that main runner through to the kitchen as the room is basically a big hallway to somewhere else...

i was tempted to just get the runner of my dreams but of course that one was out of the question price wise. I am settling for inexpensive rugs for now to move in and get settled. Then move them elsewhere when I find the real right one.

This is the table sitting where it needs to be but I am looking for different chairsSee what I mean about the rug being loud? My DD hates it and is lobbying for something different as she will get my handmedowns ;)

This is part of the first floor. Just a quick sketch.

I think that rug is way too big and I would not have it encroach on the "hallway" space. A rug should be just big enough for people to pull out their chairs without them hanging off the rug. You have a beautiful floor! Don't cover up so much of it! I don't think you need a runner in the "hallway."

ck_squared - Thanks for wanting to see my floors! But that is the one area I think, that requires a rug. That hall in the bottom of the sketch leads past the powder room and laundry to the garage. Straight shot to the kitchen. Yes I know why is the kitchen at the other end of the house... Out of the scope of this thread tho :)

So does anyone want to see the LR rug and comment on the color/size? Or should I start a new thread for that?

I don't care for the gold rug and runner at all... since your table is off center, what about no rug under the table and just a runner where there's the most traffic and a small rug in front of the door?? otherwise, I would get a single large rug.

if you do decide to get a large rug and offset the table, don't get a bordered rug! or a rug with a central medallion!

I'd like to see the LR rug. Re: your DR, consider two complimentary rugs-one for under the table and one for the hallway.

I also think the rug is too large too. For a 54" table, a 8-1/2 to 9 foot rug would be large enough. If you really want something in the hall, that should be a separate runner or a small one at the entry from the garage.

I saw several rugs with softer colors and/or patterns last night. I don't think you should buy, even as a temporary rug, something you don't like. A dining table doesn't have to have a rug while you look for one you like -- and if you drop your size to 8-9 feet, you will have so many more to chose from and your beautiful table won't seem overwhelemed by a large rug

Missy -- The size of that rug is the right size for the room if you were to cover the whole floor.

The problem is the design of the rug. The pattern is so large it steals the view away from the windows and looks clunky -- probably why your DH doesn't like it. I would return that one for sure.

Something more modern, and more in the style of the orange rugs you showed would work if you want to cover the whole floor. What I'd keep in mind is the table and chairs are very dark. The floor and walls are very dark. To enhance the room a rug would need to be lighter. I also hope I won't hurt your feelings by saying that the scale of the table is a bit small -- if you have or could get a leaf for the table it would improve the scale.

Again, I think a light, bright runner is a good idea.

Also is there a light fixture or are you using surface-mounted or recessed ceiling lights? I'd look to coordinate location of the light with the size/shape of the rug if a central fixture is planned.

It's a pretty room and the windows are lovely. I would make those the focus and keep the rug very quiet myself.

So put a rug in the hallway in front of powder room to garage. End it at the wall there. That's what we have. I really don't think you need a runner going down that entire "hallway" next to dining room. Especially if you want to delineate the dining space from that "hallway."

Busybee3 - I agree the borders/ medallions complicate things a lot for this room.

bonnieann - so we moved the gold rug into the LR and will use it there. I might get pictures later

lascatz - the table has 6 ten inch leaves so can literally take up the entire room. I'm planning on finding other chairs - these are ok as extras...

rococogurl - I think a lighter, more plain rug would be better. We are trying the silver-gray rug that I put in the LR in the DR. The silver rug looked too blue in the LR. Same rug as the gold just different color.

ck - you've narrowed my list of rugs! I will try to let more wood floor shine through!

I have to get some work finished this afternoon then can try to post other pics later

thanks everybody I love seeing this through your eyes.

Well, I actually like the gold rug. To me, the window muntins and view, the dark woodwork, all say Midwest gothic farmhouse to me. I would not want a formal or elaborate rug. In fact I might like a custom sized sisal wool with a border.

    Such a pretty room!

After seeing your pic, I think a wool sisal with fabric border would be great under the table. Then a more colorful/patterned runner. Beautiful room!

If you want to size the rug for the maximum size of the table it seems you would want to treat it like nearly carpet and go for something that is not as strong visually as that 12x12 you returned so that the table isn't overpowered when you have it smaller -- especially if you think you will keep it smaller more often. If you fall in love with a stronger rug, I'd plan on keeping the table with leaves most of the time.

Mnt - the lone voice! The house could be a gothic maybe, and we have yellow siding. I tried to make the case for a custom natural fiber/wool rug but DH would have none of it, which is why we are here now...he wanted yellow.

theclose - see above. That combo was my first choice but I had difficulty keeping to a budget with the runner. So came up with the 12x12 idea

lascatz - that is what my daughter said. The loud rug had good colors but was too much. The pic seems a bit distorted as far as the size of the table relative to the room.

We put the gold rug in the LR,; DH likes it there. For now it's ok I have places upstairs that could use both rugs if it doesn't stay on the first floor.i think I will try the silver rug in the DR

the silver might look better with the wall color... can you center the light at all so you might be able to consider bordered rugs? if you can add another 60" to your table's size you probably need to determine how often you will do that and how 'formal' those occasions (informal family gatherings vs entertaining for dinner parties, etc) might be because that will help determine what size rug you will want.

a patterned rug (with no medallion or border) might help the table look less off center if the light is remaining as is...

We swapped the rugs, Gold went to the living room and my DH is happy. He likes it better there and so do I. The color looks less orangey. And the size is good for that room. The silver rug looks 'OK' in the DR but is really a bit too blue for the DR and the fabric I've had for windows. It will be perfect upstairs in my snore room however when I get to that project so both are keepers and will work fine as place holders.

Busybee3 - I would keep the table at the round 54" as I only do larger 10+ sit downs a few times a year. I guess I really think of the DR divided into two sections a 6 X 16 hallway and a 10 X 16; as that side is where the table lives, and the light fixture is placed accordingly. I do not want to center the table to the room as that would be trickly for walking to the kitchen. What I consider the hall is really part of the room and will have the buffet placed there. The other walls will have a china cab and server.

For now I will have the silver rug placed where the large gold rug is in the first picture, but I will try with out a runner for awhile. Not ideal but will get us by to move in - While I keep my eyes peeled for the perfect rug.
