What would you do with these corners?

  1. I have these two "corners" that I feel could be better utilized. One has an old slipcovered chair (pardon the dog, he's the only one that uses it!). I intended it to be a cozy reading nook but sadly, it goes unused. The opposite corner is more decorative than functional with a small bureau (maybe too small for the space?) where I keep my table linens and seasonal pillow covers. This is my large family room and the corners flank a large, picture window. I considered a corner bookcase, but with all the built ins on the TV wall, I felt it would be too much stuff on each wall. Do I just keep what I have or do you have ideas to improve upon the space?

Have you tried pulling the chair (gently, don't knock the doggie off) in front of the window just a bit? Then a round table, with a small lamp and room for books, and maybe pencils for doing the crossword. Maybe move one of the shelves to the other side for balance. Maybe a swing arm wall lamp for the chair?

Your pooch is very photogenic, isn't he!

What a sweet doggie. He looks as thought he's posing for you. :^D
I would move the chair to the other side of the window in front of the curtain to hide the fact that the radiator cover is off center. Then move the little chest under the frame picture on the left.

lol! I just noticed that about my radiator cover. Its actually not off-center in real life like in the pic. I think my cleaners moved it to clean under/behind and forgot to put it back in place. Good advice though, thank you!

I agree with bpathome's suggestion for the room. I would pull the focus off the corners, when you have such a lovely space to address.

I agree, just a little adjustment and it is perfect. That is such a cute dog! I already have two, one 14 lbs, one 140 lbs and it makes me want another. What breed/mix is he?

Thanks all! Even though it is a high traffic area I could place furniture in the path? there is plenty of room, I just never even considered that placement.

Ann, he's a rescue dog. We think mostly Jack Russell Terrier. He's about a year old but full grown. Great dog. Awesome with my three kids! And clearly, he likes the camera :)

There is nothing wrong with having an empty corner.

We have a shih tzu and a shiloh shepard. Maybe we need a medium dog!

    He is so stinkin' cute

Any chance you can pull the curtain rod further out on either side of the window and take the curtains a bit more out on either side? I think that would be a great first start.

Not the best pic but just in case I wasn't explaining what I meant very clearly.

better yet, here is a quick mock up. It is not the best but gives you the idea.

Thanks Beverly for the lovely mock up. I like the round table there as to avoid any sharp corners in a traffic area. I clearly did not stage the photo. My curtains are all askew and my radiator cover is off center. How embarrassing :) lol. I will take a better picture tonight with everything properly in place. In the meantime, here is a better shot to show the orientation to the space and traffic flow. The room with the charcoal rug is the kids hang out/play room/TV Room.

    Better perspective of room

Here is the front door which leads traffic either straight ahead to a hallway then kitchen, or through an arched doorway to the main living space...

Thanks Beverly. I agree, and having a table would be a nice options to have, since currently, we have no space for an end table on either side of the couch, hence the tray on the ottoman to at least have a surface for drinks while at the couch. I'm open to new furniture. Any chair suggestions? One big or two smaller? I'd like a small profile as not to block the window view too much.

I'd do something like this only with smaller chairs and a somewhat larger round table between them. Leave the corners bare.

Love those, Sue! You have an eye for my taste. Should they be pushed in as to be part of my couch area, or pulled back against the window as to create a separate, distinct sitting area? Why wasI so hung up on putting 'stuff' in the corners?! How did I not see this whole new options sooner? My only concern is that the space will start to cluttered with furniture. It's not too much going on? With the bookcases and stuff? Maybe I should swap out my rug for a neutral sisal instead to eliminate the busy pattern? I like the look of the sea grass (?) window treatments in Sue's pic with the white.

For you, Ann. He's a photobomber! I tried to take a shot of the fabric on my window seat for a thread in the kitchen forum, but could not get him to budge!

    cute doggie! :)

I like your patterned rug in that space- I would definitely keep it. I like sue's pic idea for that space-- only with smaller, but comfy chairs and a larger table if you need a lamp there.

it will probably be a more used space if you have 2 chairs there, esp when you have larger groups of people over.

Thank you, grapefruit. It's mostly because of all the great advice I get here from you all!

It is just a lovely space! I love idea for the separate conversation area - I think it would be a great smaller place to sit for a two person conversation. Is that your front door to the right of the space (pardon if this has been addressed, I might have missed it)? If so, it would be perfect.

Take this suggestion with a grain of salt - I am a pattern crazy person, but given the patterned rug (which I love) - what do you think of a subtle pattern/texture on the chairs you chose - I'm thinking a cream on cream stripe? And maybe a touch of wood on the chairs (legs or frames?) to tie the areas together?

Honestly, I'd take everything out and extend the curtains as someone suggested. I really don't think you need anything on that side of the room. Anything you put there is just going to look like you're trying to fill the space.

I think it's nice to have a seating area separate from the sectional, and keep it close to the window, leaving your traffic path open.

I think what you have on that side now looks cluttered, and 2 simple small-scale chairs with a table between them will look less cluttered!

I think anything in front of the window is not going to be able to be very close to the window due to the radiator.

Another idea is to remove the chair and small chest, and put two chests, a little bigger than the one you have but not too big, on either side of the window, add a small lamp atop each, and a picture above. Simple symmetry.

K9, you're right. I did a little staging with a small table and chairs that I grabbed from a different room I and put them in front of the window. The DH thought it looked silly. I think the space is more shallow then what people see in the picture. I played around with this today. Maybe a reading lamp behind the chair and it will start to look more inviting at least on that 'corner'?

The chair in the corner: pull it up to the sectional area in the open space. You don't have room for two chairs and a table over to the side, IMO. The other corner: take everything down, off the walls, and away from the corner. Dont move to another part of the room, just subtract it.

I am with everyone else....nothing in the corners. If it looks bare, a tall green plant in one corner. I am not a furniture-in-the-corner person. I see you have a TV in the next room so you probably don't need any more chairs in this room.

Even the chair in the corner doesn't look particularly inviting. It looks like you had an extra chair that you didn't know what to do with so you stuck it in the corner. Extend the curtains and take down the wall art. You have a lovely room as is and every wall/corner doesn't need something in it.

I love your space, and covet your built-ins! I'm in the "Nothing in the Corners" camp. I don't think you need anything at all there and agree that the items placed there now are extraneous.
