Plants from Rinoa, Seeds from Mr. Ko

Hi everyone. It's been a busy couple of days. Both my orders from Taiwan arrived.

The plants from Rinoa are potted and will be getting several days of shade as they adjust to the dry New Mexico air.

I also potted up two other seedlings I felt were getting constricted.

Also, I planted 30 seeds from Mr. Ko. They are in some nice 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 x 4" pots I got on amazon. I'm trying out a mix of coconut coir and diatomaceous earth as the germination mix. No pictures today as it was dark by the time I finished, but I'll update once things start to grow. In the meantime here a pic of another seedling about one month old.

Now for some advice from you experts. One of the plants from Rinoa had some major root rot. I cut off the offending part, but had to take a small amount of caudex. I'm worried that the rot has already spread further into the caudex. I dusted the cut with cinnamon. What should my next step be?

Dain. Have you contacted Rinoa about this plant? You need to send her the photo of the plant with rot. She is very good and will replace it, but needs to see it in a photo.

No, I did not email her. I assumed that some plants might not make it, and that this is a fact of shipping them across the world. Other than shoot her an email, would you do anything else to try to save the plant?

    root trained slice her up

Rick is correct. You should let her know just to be safe. Not sure if she'll want that plant back or not but if not then you can hopefully save it or experiment.

I can't see very well in the photo, Dain, but make sure you cut well above the rotted part until you see unblemished white. It's a lot like amputating a limb, you have to be ahead of the rot. Then let it dry up a bit--to the point where the cut is more or less sealed by healed tissue. If it seals, that is the clue that the cut you made is enough. If that was my plant I would probably seal it with glue before potting it up.

We'll cross our paws for goodluck. I hope it works.

Dain, I had a tree come with some rot and I contacted Rinoa right away. I told her that I would see how it made out. It did not. She sent me a replacement tree. Unless in shipping it took 3 wks or more to get to you, then you might assume a possibility of something like this, maybe.

I believe that Rinoa as a reputable grower would want to know that her trees are being received in good shape and time. Her business and reputation rest on these facts. This is why she ships EMS.. Better she is aware.

i would not think of it as complaining.

With this tree. I would cut away any tissue that has beige in the cambium layer. There cannot even be a speck. Needs to be completely clear (White).. Let it dry back for a few days, plant up and do not water for 3-4 days. Then give a drink and leave it in a well lit area, but not direct sun.

Thank you everyone. Rick, how long did your plant last until you were sure it kicked the bucket?

Do you prune buds to encourage foliar growth?

No, I have not pruned buds for foliar growth. I usually will snip off buds which form on newly acquired, bare root trees. I like the tree to be able to put it's energy into a good root system first. A lot of the time these buds that form on bare root trees will drop off on their own.

Dain, which trees did you get from Rinoa?

I misread you said new trees. It makes sense to allow for a healthy root system first.

I ordered 5. Three for me two for my mother. Mine are Attractive (the sick one), Night Light, and Blessing Star. My mother had me order Crimson Moon, and Dawn Wish.

The seeds from Mr. Ko are for Ebay 42 and Ebay 51. It will be exciting to see what traits come from them.

It will Dain and those are nice trees that you got. I hope you contact Rinoa. She will definitely help you out.

Those look good Dain! How long did it take for the plants to get here? Do you have a permit to import plants? I've never ordered plants from Rinoa but would really like too.

Great looking plant Rick! Really like those flowers.

Rick, I did send her an email with a photo earlier today.

Mark, there is no permit required, unless you are a large commercial importer. Rinoa and Ko take care of everything from their end. Both seeds and plants arrived in one week.

I heard back from Rinoa. She told me to put some fungicide in water and let it soak for a bit, then let the plant dry out for 4-5 days before potting. Does anyone recommend a fungicide? I've only got Bayer 3 in 1. Will that work?

I cannot buy a fungicide here, but I think that you might try one of the Hydroponic stores? I believe Jericson uses one. Possibly he will let you know, if he does.

    Check them out.

I examined the plant today. There was no palpable softness next to where I cut it. I planted and will keep it sheltered for the next five or so days.

dust it with some cinnamon, it is a natural fungicide

I hope that the tree stays healthy for you, Dain. Will be a nice one. Keep Rinoa informed on it's progress.

    It's a lot like amputating a limb ...

pagan, i won't ask how you know this ...

Perhaps i shouldn't say this but I actually do minor surgeries routinely at work. I'm not afraid to use a scalpel, but I really hope this tree survives.

Hello Dain- I know this post is very old, but I came upon it when I googled Mr. Ko? Do you happen to know the name of his website? I know he’s out of Taiwan?
