Are you looking for an area rug per se or for carpeting (possibly with a border) that is not walk to wall? If the latter, any carpet store will work.

No, I want an area rug that I can roll up once a year (or when necessary) and take to Hagopian and have them clean it. No padding. Nothing to "ruin" if we have animal or baby accidents.

You can get any broadloom carpet cut and bound as an area rug, that's what sjhockey was referring to. I've done this a number of times.

What is broadloom? Can that be rolled up and taken in for cleaning?

Thanks SJ. Since that is all regular carpet, it can't be taken in for cleaning, right? Dogs (and grandbabies) are a never ending issue for us as I foster dogs and have my own. Half the point of doing this is so I can roll up the rug, take it in, and have it cleaned. I don't think bound carpet will work for that. Or am I wrong about that?

you can roll up area rugs/bound or serged carpets to have them cleaned. the biggest problem with rolling up a 15x20 rug is the size! it will be very heavy, but the cleaners probably come and pickup for you...

Bound carpet can be brought in for cleaning just like a rug. It is a rug.

I don't remember the exact dimensions. The room is about 15x20 I think. I want a 2' perimeter of wood floor, so I would want the rug to be about 11x16.

Wow Marie! Those are pretty! Different than what I expected. I don't think it goes with my living room style, but they are pretty and I'd love to walk on one with my bare feet!

Standard sizes for most area rugs are 8x10, 9x12, 12x16. If you buy a hand knotted rug the actual dimensions will vary by a few inches in each direction, so that a rug sold as a 12x16, might really be 11'10 x 16'2".

From what you describe as your needs, to survive children & peta, I would get high quality carpeting bound as an area rug. That is what I am doing as i want the carpet to be able to be removed for deep cleaning. Am going with Smartstrand, best price I am finding is at the big boxes.

mdln - We have had Smartstrand carpet bound for an area rug and we found the best pricing to be at a carpet store in their warehouse area where they have either left overs from installations or smaller pieces bought directly from the mills. Much, much less expensive than the big box stores.
