Your followers can stop getting alerts, if they choose, by either not following you anymore, or by changing their notification settings within their own profile.

Everyone is different, so I would think it would be best to leave it up to the person who chose to follow you whether they want to be notified every time you do anything on the site. I know some of my clients follow me, and they rather like getting notifications, especially when I add a photo or two to an ideabook I am assembling for them!
