So I want to covert my garage into a quilting room remove the garage door but want to make sure no water leaks in what prep should be done.

Garage conversions are complicated. You would need to ensure the city allows this conversion to living space (which this would be) and then you need to start working with concrete specialists to work with the slab (needs moisture mitigation and remove the slope). Most garage floors are sloped towards the door (to allow water to run towards the door and exit through the door). This slope needs to be removed. Then the framing has to be reworked so that french doors can be hung properly (may need to cut into the slab to install framing...may mean many other options).

Professionals with knowledge of your town's requirements and local conditions need to be brought on board, heating/cooling professionals brought in, proper venting added, insulation added, etc.

A design-build firm would be a great place to start.

i'm thinking of doing this for a small barn we have in our back yard, but i'm just going to get a new garage door that has more glass than a standard one. less finished look of course, but an easier path.

I'm a little late to the show here, but better late than never.! I am currently doing much the same as the in the article, converting full glass French doors to sliding doors. I removed the casing and down sized the opening by 1 1/2" sides and top, and finished it off with drywall bull nose corners. My question is, what are you using for door pulls? One of my doors has a standard knob and latch, the other doesn't have a knob, just plain. I'm thinking about either using 2 1/8" round pulls which will replace the knob on one door, and drill the other door to use the same, matching pull. My other option is to fill the one hole and not have any pulls, just leave it plain and use the window edge as a pull. It looks like you had knobs on both doors and replaced them with the round pulls, but it's hard to see in the picture. What pulls did you use? Decisions, decisions.. TY

Thanks so much for your reply. This room was an addition to the house by the previous owners. There is plenty of room I think they just didn't want to spend the money on French doors. I have attached some pictures so that you have an idea of what I am working with. FYI-I am not married to the furniture at all and will probably replace it at some point down the road. The patio is just outside of the sliding glass doors that I want to replace. I also attached a picture of the other side of the room. This door leads to an office/study.

Yes.....except that the windows were replaced two years ago....not ready nor can afford to get rid of them yet! I think the smaller sliding patio doors will look too crowded - think I will have to settle on a glass single door.....thanks for your input..really appreciate everyone ideas!

If it helps, I have 5' (60") french doors in my room If you need a larger opening to move things in and out, both doors can open. The drawback would be a screen, like you would get on a slider. But they have retractable screens that you can install for french doors. I think french doors look better, cleaner looking (less bulky), easy to open, etc. As for price, these are solid oak. I got them in their raw state and stained them my self. (I used an ebony dye, and then a black stain. sealed with Penofin black oil). The cost? $1100. My husband installed them. I think you can find 60" white french doors at Home Depot in the $600 range? they're vinyl clad exterior, I think. I had those at one time (with the grids) and they held up pretty well.

Great idea! I love the way this photo looks in the conversion and with the overhang over the doors it may help with water collecting at the doors. You will need a strip of rubber threshold running the length of the floor across the door opening and then good bottom door seals. You could make some of the doors dummy doors to lessen the possibility of leaks and just have one or two of the doors functional. Good luck!
