Coffee table help please

last modified: 10 years ago

I am slowly working on my family room. My next decision is the coffee table. Here is a photo of the new furniture, and an overall layout.

First, I am leaning toward a circular coffee table. My other choice would be square. Any thoughts on that?

Next, I need to figure out what materials. I am either going a wood/metal combo or maybe a stone top, or leather? I don't want an upholstered ottoman style. I've attached some tables I like - not married to any of them.

Thank you!

Edited: The original third photo was a repeat!

I would do a round coffee table, square would look good too, but much harder to find.

I vote for round too especially with the square-ness of the room and furniture placement. I like the first and third tables you've shared (they seem to be the same one).

For that room, I like the second. #4 is too small, as is #5, although maybe they come in larger sizes.

I like the top of #1 (repeated as #3?) but not the base.

I too like a round one. I realize you didn't ask about this, but I would also remove one of the couches. The room looks completely taken over by wood and furniture and it does feel as if the 2 couches relate to each other very well.

Thank you! I agree with the round. Now to pick a style and size! :) Also, I removed the duplicate "third" photo.

lukkiirish - I agree that we are tight with the furniture. It would be hard for me to remove, since it is all new.

I would do a round tufted leather ottoman

Could you do a mock up of the size round ones you are considering? If the furniture is staying as is, I'm afraid that if the table is large and centered in the room it would be awkward to get to the seating. If it was a smaller round and centered, no one would be able to reach it.

If you put the couches facing each other (if possible) and close enough to center a table between them, then a table between the chairs (that would now be facing the fireplace and wouldn't need to reach the coffee table), it might be easier to maneuver into the room and get a table usable by both couches.

I was looking for examples and saw this interesting idea. Probably not for most of us, but I thought it was a good solution for their room and you can also see how a rectangle one would work (if you imagine the right one gone) and also how large a square you'd need, if these two tables were actually one.

I definitely think round. You have so many straight lines that it would be a nice addition.

Thank you all! This is a super quick mock up of a couple ideas mentioned. If we keep the sofa as-is, I was thinking a simple console table behind it might be nice since it is far away from any table in the middle.

Hmmm, now that I see the mock up I might prefer the second. The round might not provide easy access to the table. You would have to be sitting in the middle of the sofas to reach the table. However, it might be more pleasing to the eye. I am no help! lol

I like it with the sofas facing each other. Seems to flow better. Also agree that you need a fairly large coffee table to work with all that furniture and the large wall unit, but a large round table would be very difficult to fit in that setup, hard to get around.

I'd go with an oval table

The TV unit is off center, but here is a quick switeroo. Feels pretty good.

This spot is a little tight, going into the dining room:

I am thinking that although I like the look of a round table, it wouldn't be functional. So, looking back at rectangular or oval.

I like the last arrangement, but to get a more open feel, have you tried flanking each side of the Armoire with a chair instead? That' would make the entry more accessable. Also, reposition the sofa's accordingly.

I can try that too. Couple questions - would the chairs point towards the TV, or in? Also, where do the 2 sofas go?

Hmmm...doesn't seem to work. I think I'd put the sofas an an L, like you had them originally, and put one of the chairs at an angle, by the armoire, facing the sofas, and put the second chair in a bedroom. then you can also do a round coffee table.

    Removing 1 sofa

    Removing 1 chair, facing in.

What would happen in reality with the kids:

The room feels more open with 1 chair removed. If we go with that....ouch, expensive lesson.

I don't think it looks too crowded with the 2 chairs in the original position. I was just suggesting rearranging the couches to try to make your coffee table choices work. You are so fast! Before you moved everything again, I was going to suggest skootching (if possible) the armoire over just a few inches to the right (not enough to look too off center) then moving the right couch in a few inches from the window and the other couch in just a couple of inches to give you more room to pass behind. I can't tell if the couches can go down toward the armoire a little bit or not. If so, you could spread the chairs (facing the tv) apart a little to get a table between.

Sorry, after seeing this last group of pics, I can see my suggestion isn't a go. But I do have a question. You're only concern so far has been for the coffee table. What about end tables for lighting and so on?

@olychick - Thanks! I will think about your suggestions! It is easy to move furniture around since there is no area rug, no kids around, and sliders. :)

@lukkiirish - I definitely need more things to finish the room. Area rug, an end table or two (depending on furniture configuration), possible console table behind the one sofa, lighting, finishing touches on the TV unit. Etc! I guess I was focusing on the coffee table since that was my current dilemma.

My concern is if you'll have the space? It's hard to tell with the pictures. It seems that even if the chair gets moved occasionally for the tv, that set up will at least have good flow, allow you the space for the coffee table of your choice and still have room for end tables too.

I've actually had living room problems for 9 years now and I've never been able to work it out. So these are all questions I keep asking myself too, over and over again. LOL

There is room for a console table behind the sofa that is directly facing the TV. We need a little something there because the space was meant for a small dining table, but we don't need that.

Sixkeys, do you know the manufacturer of the third table in your initial posting? That looks like it would be perfect for my daughter's apartment.

The rectangular one is the griffin table from Pottery Barn.

If I end up removing a chair and going with a circular table, I am thinking about this one from PB:

Well, I wasn't expecting this....DH doesn't want a coffee table! He thinks it will be another surface to get cluttered by the kids and encourage eating in front of the tv. He makes a great point.....but I feel the room will look unfinished. He will totally let me get one if I feel strongly about it, but I respect his opinion too.

You need a coffee table, IMO. So what if it gets cluttered?

How about individual ottomans and martini tables for drinks, like artillery's? That would be another option.

Ok, I got him to agree to the table without too much heartache. :) His biggest objection is an area rug, which I really want too. One thing at a time.....

I think all of your arrangements work in your space. My only thought that is if that room is your main tv watching area and depending on how much tv you watch, the sofas facing each other isn't a very comfortable position for watching tv unless you are lying down. You have a very nice space btw.

We didn't want an area rug at first either. We loved looking at our hardwood floors but furniture moves around and dust collects under it. After almost 10 years we bit the bullet and bought a rug we liked. What a difference, not only does it ground the space and help keep the furniture in place, but it totally warmed the room up. Can't imagine the room without it now.

In regards to the coffee table, have you considered a large ottoman maybe?

I would consider an ottoman, but I would probably do leather since there are so many upholstered things in there already.

In terms of the area rug, we have dogs who like to pee on rugs. Our entire house (except for the basement) is hardwood and tile. As soon as we moved into this house in Feb, we really haven't had any doggie messes. But, I hate how the furniture slides around. And the room is very big and dark brown right now, so it really needs it from the "warmth" perspective. I might try a cheap rug as a tester to see what happens. This is the room that the dogs spend the most time in.

Yeah, I agree, leather is better. It doesn't get dirty either. I posted the ones I did because of their shape and because the leg style was not solid.

oh gosh, that makes sense. Yeah, I don't blame him for not wanting a rug if that's the case.

I love the idea of a round leather ottoman in this space. Or the dual ottomans Tibbrix shows. Having had cats that pee on rugs, I feel your pain. Pretty room! Where is the round coffee table from in the 4th photo in your first post? Thanks!

If you get a rug, sprinkle pepper on the rug. That will keep the dogs from peeing on it.
