Liebherr or Miele fridge? reliability and extended warranty ?

Hello,

I found some very useful advice here by reading previous discussions, so I figured it would be the best place to post my questions.

There are 2 models of fridges that I am interested in:

- Miele 24" KS 37472 iD http://www.mieleusa.com/Product/Details/1212

and

- Liebherr HRB 1120 http://www.liebherr.us/HGH/en-GB/products_us-hg.wfw/id-1718935-0_39642-0

There is no doubt that both share the same frame and are probably made in the same factory.

I read about a lot of problems both in the US and in Europe with the newer Liebherr fridges. If you have a Liebherr that is almost 5 year old, can you confirm that reliability is not what it used to be?

Does anybody know how much better in terms of reliability the Miele could be compared to the Liebherr ? Are they using different compressors, different sensors?

Also I want to be very careful with the warranty, as this new fridge wouldn't be a small expense to me.

How does servicing of the Miele compare to Liebherr?

I am in the US and apparently basic warranty is excluded if I do not use a Miele installer (even the first year). On the other hand it doesn't seem that the Miele extended warranty requires an installation by a Miele installer to be valid. If you had experience with Miele or Liebherr refrigeration service while in warranty, I would like if you could share your experience.

Thank you very much

I have no information about the refrigerator you linked which certainly appears to be a Liebherr.

Re Miele - Your statement about installation and warranty is not correct. My Miele built in was not installed by them and is covered by warranty absolutely. I also bought a 5-year extended warranty for it recently as it's now a year old. That was purchased directly from Miele. I have several of their appliances and I do not recommend using anyone but them for service or purchasing a warranty from anyone but them directly.

Miele service is excellent in my area. But it's always best to find out, in advance, whether their factory trained servicers are available in your area. They have special training and diagnostic tools. Other second party servicers cannot offer the same level of expertise as a general rule.

W.r.t. warranty: is it possible that they recently changed their terms:

What I'm reading here after clicking on "Appliance warranty" http://www.mieleusa.com/Service/Warranty is:

Where Is This Limited Warranty Valid?

This Limited Warranty is only applicable, if the Miele Product was installed in the United States of America ("U.S.") or Puerto Rico by an installer authorized by Miele ("Authorized Miele Installer"), or if the Miele Product is a Miele Marine appliance and was installed on board a vessel before it left the U.S. or Puerto Rico.

What Is Required to Request Warranty Service?

Verification of the purchase date and of the authorized installation shall be required before warranty service is performed.

Interesting, I have to check with my vendor. Installing the fridge is basically just hooking up the anti tilt bracket and plugging it in. I don't see why I should have to pay someone to do that "installation"

You might call them for clarification. However, in my experience with 6 appliances, once you register the appliance with them, there is no issue.

More important is whether there is factory authorized service available where you live.

The place I bought it from says there is no issue, they will register it for us. They are an authorized dealer.

Do not get a Liebherr. I have an older model and it has never worked properly. I posted on GardenWeb under 'yoyopa' if you want to read my many posts expressing dissatisfaction. What makes matters worse is the absolutely poor customer service by Liebherr. Beware!! I am currently looking for another refrigerator that will fit into the custom cabinetry/cut-out.

I've had Mieles for nearly 6 years now and I quite pleased. We did have an issue with an authorized installer that did not know what they were doing and messed up the doors and those had to be replaced. The builder covered it, but it was the installers fault, but we didn't find that out until several years later when we called and they had an odd phone number on file and we found it was the installer. Notes showed they were having trouble installing it, so I would be there and watch when it is installed.

Performance wise it has been great. I love the organization and the fact that it is wide rather than deep, so food does not get losed very easy to keep clean as well. I did buy clear acrylic holders as drawers for the shelves, but n weed to get them in the bathroom department because of the shallow depth. I also have forgotten to lower the compartment on the door that holds eggs because it is clear and had eggs allowed the floor. I solved that by buying the same type of clear egg holder and keeping it shut with that Saran moving sealer.

We did have trouble because of the same lousy installer with missing parts and it took at least 6 tries to get Miele reps to send the right ones. Most were clips, so make sure you have all of those.

We had a lemon of a dishwasher as well, but persisted and they finally replaced it with a better model. The service person was excellent, and helped us trouble shoot until we could prove it was defective. The present dishwasher is the best one that I have ever owned, hands down.

If I'm not mistaken, aren't some of Miele's models simply re-badged Liebherrs' ?

Also FWIW... my three year old Liebherr is purring along silently, while keeping produce fresh extremely long... :)

The rebadged Liebherrs are not sold in the US currently, the US Mieles are made by Thermador in Turkey I believe.

The rebadged Liebherrs are being sold in the US now.

24" Miele Fridge not the Mastercool series which is are the Turkey built units.

ok, thanks. We just installed the 36" bottom freezer recently. So far, I love it, but my wife finds the door too heavy.

I had a long and detailed post on my Liebherr experience which of course got deleted before I could post....SIGH.

Bottom line-- I have mixed review on my happiness quotient after owning a Liebherr for 13 years.

Overall-- yes, lives up to its claims for quietness, longevity of dual compressors, freshness of food, nice layout. I do like the little alarm for open door, and the temperature readout. Keeps temp well after all these years!

But: some quality problems nonetheless make me less than thrilled. Some no big deal (replaced freezer bin and fridge bin which cracked after the years, but this was okay since they were not hard to find nor expensive to replace; but better would be not cracking at all!) Others I'm not sure how they compare--gasket/seals have cracked and split after this long in service and need replacing. But I didn't lubricate, do other people do this with theirs? They don't look that easy to replace as the ones I am familiar with from older fridges that can be screwed in, I have to investigate this further. This alone wouldn't be real cause for complaint at this age but read on...

Problems that are harder to fix and make me wish the quality were somewhat longer lasting --- small piece of plastic on the front framing is chipped off and noticeable, hard to explain where this is, it is not the seal, not the stainless (obviously), but a silver plastic framing piece. Noticeable and hard to see how to replace, it looks welded on? No idea how this happened. But it is consistent with the not super quality of the plastic interior bins that needed replacing. Worse yet: small rust spots on the front of the 'stainless' steel. I haven't ever ever used weird chemicals on it. Seems like it is coming from within? Dealer I spoke with says this is rare. Yah. Well. I didn't *do* anything to it! Of course it is long out of warranty. I have no idea how to fix this--dealer (not my dealer, place I bought it from is out of business now) gave me the number of 'a guy he knows' to get on the list for fixing this, but I couldn't reach him, didn't return my message. I'll try him again, as the 'guy' route is usually the best if you *can* get ahold of 'the guy'. Also, small dent in front door (mop handle? no idea, but it could be because the door swing has always been a bit crazy, guests tend to fling/slam it too wide open) and scratches to front stainless from kids sometime putting letter magnets on it when they were little and moving them around. Should this type of activity cause scratches? Don't know, maybe so, but not terribly impressed. My kids are not rowdier than usual, but they did after all touch it with magnetic kid things at some point. Alls I can say is that the Miele stainless dishwasher looks like new after 13 years, the Miele stainless cooktop has taken a lot more pummelling and looks better than the Liebherr at this point 13 years later. So the very attractive styling of Liebherr, the gentleman (lieb-herr), is compromised at this point by rust pin spots, a dent and little scratches, chipped plastic bit on front. Yeah, it's old, but would a subzero or Miele look like this at this age?, I don't know, but I do know my Miele dishwasher, washer, dryer, cooktop, even vacuum look great after decade plus of service. And the vacuum gets flung and banged around, a fridge sits there! Liebherr looks...old.

Also functionally-- the auto defrost is not super fantastic. As I said, it does work, and work after 13 years, that is something! But, the normal dripping down the back inside --can't let stuff touch that or it will ruin produce that touches it. Hole in back gets plugged and you have to jab at it with a toothpick. Not too glamorous l Freezer gets ice build up on bottom inside and needs too frequent defrosting. I'm not in love with all this. I take it mostly 'normal' function for Liebherr design.

I didn't get an ice maker so that never failed.

Not sure what is better, but I'd love to get something that captures the pros of Liebherr without the cons. I will be moving soon and buying so anyone with recs, please advise! I may start a new thread...

but that's my Liebherr report from a longtime owner. I'll come back and post model if I find that info... but it's a freestanding 30 inch fridge over 3 drawer freezer model.

Both units are made by Liebherr. Miele's version can simply be thought of as an "upgraded" version cosmetically. But underneath, they are identical in every way. Miele's will come with better service although honestly Liebherr has come a long way in the service department and at least here in South Florida seem to be taking good care of our clients when an issue arises.

I also highly recommend checking out this blog for info on all things Kitchen appliance related: https://appliancebuyersguide.com

I know this is an old thread-

I'm currently looking at the 30" wide Liebherr and Miele which both look like Liebherr. The Miele (https://www.appliancesconnection.com/miele-kfn15943de.html) price lands right in-between Liebherr's With BIO FRESH (https://www.appliancesconnection.com/liebherr-cbs1660.html) and W/OUT (https://www.appliancesconnection.com/liebherr-cs1640b.html).

It looks like Miele makes their own "BIO FRESH" kind of thing- just air circulating and has different doors. Does Bio Fresh matter? I kind of doubt it.

Does anyone know if the Miele unit would be better/worse/same as the Liebherr? Do they do different controls/electronics- are those better? Are they working the compressors with algorithms differently?

I realize i have some pretty specific questions- maybe the better general question is- do fridges which are the same housing usually have different controls?

I read the Summit and Blomberg fridge manuals (their tall and 28" wide fridge) and they are identical but with different names on the front page. The Miele and Liebherr have completely different manuals but there are similarities. Both are for sale locally, and I will ask them about repair/warranty.

Check the Monolith range Liebherr has on their site.

@Kelly Curious which fridge you ended up getting. I'm currently looking at the same two options: 30" Miele or Liebherr. Thanks!

I went with Liebherr, and i LOVE my fridge. Lettuce lasts 2+ weeks, the freezer has a lot more capacity than i was expecting, i can fit 1/2 a lamb in the bottom smaller drawer.

I removed one of the fridge shelves so i can fit 1/2 gallon and full gallon items on the bottom shelf (my old fridge had two shelves and that worked fine), and i removed both of the top drawers in the freezer.

i place things on the glass shelf (the ice maker is not plumbed- i have ice trays). I did this becuase you had to open the freezer all the way to open the top right drawer which is where my ice cream is, now i can open it partially- grab stuff and close it.

A few times the freezer has not shut all the way and warms up to the 20s and the alarm goes off. I have to be sure to shut the freezer- i think if the door were weighted it would close all the way (when it's not shut, it's barely cracked).

@Kelly Thank you for the feedback!
