Antique Morris chair ... Thoughts?

last modified: 9 years ago

Anyone know if this has any actual value? It's on my local CL, priced at $190. Seller says wood and leather are in excellent condition. Thoughts? Being a Stickley mission oak devotee, I like the looks of this very much. I'm not sure where I'd use it (or if we could even get it home in DH's SUV), but it's right up my alley style-wise.

I think it would be pretty on your landing where the smaller wicker chair sits now

I cant help you with your question, but wow your CL has great items!

I love it!!! I'd make room for it if I had the room.

It looks like a great chair. I'd find room for it somewhere. How about your DH's snore room or the library? I know you already have chairs in the library so the landing might be a great place.

What a cool chair! Just check the condition of the springs or whatever the base under the cushions is.

    It is lovely!!

Thanks! I was also kinda considering the landing, but the cats would destroy that leather in no time.

Hmmm ... Still considering it though!

ETA: I've been trying to research the maker online and found this, which I think is wonderful!

Honestly, MizGG - I'm leaning away from it at this point. I really LIKE it, but I just can't think of a practical place to use it. It's in Trophy Club. You go get it. Hurry.

    :-D

Whoa. We have Morris Chairs coming out the wazoo, apparently. This one (not as nice, I don't think) is priced at $800. Yikes!

it doesn't look that comfortable to me if you are thinking of getting a chair that you will actually want to use....

Ohhhhh! But it "enables you to fully relax nerves and muscles", per the ad! Hahaha!

I'd get that chair just for its coolness factor.

Honestly, unless you have a place for it, a bargain is never a bargain just because someone asks less than you think it might be worth.

MizGG - seriously, I think you should get this! I am definitely NOT going to, but it's so neat and the price is right! You probably have a vehicle that it would fit in too!

I really do like it, but don't have a place for it. I need matching chairs for our office, but they have to be on a smaller scale (to go on either side of a hutch). It is a great price! It reminds me of one my great grandparents had ... they had a wonderful 1920 (I think? Or earlier) Arts and Crafts bungalow in Arlington. :)

I say grab that chair! Find a place for it later.

I have an idea. MizGG puts it in her vehicle where it fits, and drives it to auntjen's house where it fits. Done. Although, I never found those wooden arms to be very comfortable. The ones in your picture have a nicer curve than my dad's chair, though.

Now, about that convertible bed! THAT'S what I want in my den/guest room. I never like sleeping in a day bed with three sides, but if the long side can be dropped down (like a crib!) it's really useful.

I have a mid-size SUV ... may have to strap it to the roof. :D

We really do have good CL stuff here. I have to limit my browsing, or I get overwhelmed and anxious. You should see how many stars I mark as favorites every day! :D

Yeah, I really need to stop looking for awhile, but I can't seem to help myself!

It's not all good stuff though. Case in point ... (Doesn't the obviously cranky child make you want this even MORE?) Somebody actually thinks this is worth $50. Dang.

LOL! They seriously couldn't take two seconds to get the kid and shoes out of the picture? Wait, maybe he loves the couch, and is mad they're selling it. :D

I'll see your "Couch for sale, boy not included" and raise you a musical Elvis wine jug--which is listed in "Antiques" -- and looks more like Ricky Nelson.....

Holy crap! That's also a little Ricky Ricardo-esque, no? And his HEAD comes off! His bloomin' HEAD! Hahahaha!

I DO keep coming back to this listing though. I think it's ridiculously cute. Again - completely impractical for me to keep looking at. It's like something that would go in a 4-year old wannabe little cowboy's room. Yet, this 53-year old suburbanite weirdo is developing a thing for it.

Ok, GWers .... it's time for an intervention. I had a feeling this day was coming. Let's have her meet us somewhere, and y'all distract her while I disable her CL account.

    :D

No, really, it would be cute in a little cowboy's room! (My 4 yr old nephew needs it!)

(Sorta OT, but we saw Van Halen at Gexa last night! And is ALL of Dallas under construction for the next 10 yrs??!! I usually try not to drive east of Arlington anymore ... but of course everything I like on CL is in the Dallas area, rather than Fort Worth. Sigh.)

I am laughing so hard I'm snorting!

I love the Morris chair. I have a rocking chair that would match it, was my father's favorite chair. I could have picked it up on my way through Dallas last weekend.

And omg the construction was horrendous! We decided to go over to Ft Worth and hit I 35W North to go to Oklahoma instead of going through downtown Dallas. That was a huge mistake. Terrible mess. Heading back home to Houston we definitely didn't go that route. The George Bush Toll road was a good choice very little traffic and no construction! But here in the Houston area it's the same thing.

Oh my dog, get the Morris chair. Love it!

That Morris chair looks clunky and uncomfortable and has a bad upholstery job. Not all antiques were worth preserving----that one looks like an early model dental chair!

Van Halen at Gexa? How cool! Were they as good as they used to be? I was going to say something about them aging, then I remembered that so I am so I won't even go there. ;-)

EVERYTHING is under construction in D/FW it seems. I'm amazed they actually completed that portion of 121 through Hurst, and even more amazed that it's still a parking lot much of the time. Either that, or there are idiots driving waaaaaaay too fast and aggressively. I'm getting to where I really dislike freeway driving. I know that statistically accidents are more likely to happen on the side streets, but I'd rather take them. At least I know I'm not going to have some bubba in a monster truck barreling up on my bumper at a ridiculous speed. Add to that the fact that so many people are on their phones (or texting! TEXTING!) and it's truly frightening. I really dislike driving east of Arlington (or even through Arlington). I'm probably turning into one of those little old ladies who just putters down the freeway at 40 mph (but I promise to do so in the far right lane). ;-)

kswl2 - a dental chair??? Ewwwww. Now you've ruined it totally for me. ;-)

Jen, I try to avoid Airport Freeway as if my life depended on it. Literally. :D My sis-in-law lives in Hurst, and I dread the drive so much. I'm west of Ft Worth (after living in Arlington most of my life), and have gotten spoiled with the slower pace here. Get off my lawn! :D

My husband is from Long Island, and after riding in the car with him on the LIE, I should never complain about Texas traffic (even Houston) again. Oh, my. I just closed my eyes and prayed each time we went anywhere. When we'd get to our destination, I'd be all sweaty, nail gouges in my palms, light-headed, near tears. It made Boston, LA, DC, etc, feel like pokey traffic in comparison (to me, anyway).

Van Halen was great! David Lee doesn't really sing anymore, he kind of mumbles and poses, but is still fun to watch. Eddie was amazing, wow.

Speaking of aging rockers, WE SAW THE STONES THIS SUMMER. Yes, I'm yelling because it was my lifelong dream, and I love them so much. They were unbelievable. I was like those screaming girls in Beatles' clips. :D (We saw Sir Paul last year, another awesome show.) I'll take these old rockers over new stuff any day. :)

Ok now, how can I hijack your thread any worse?! :D

I love the cowboy chair. :) Doesnt look like a cowboy chair to me. Especially with the chair cushion on the other side.

But it has pictures of Cowboys all over the upholstery and ropes. Hard not to be a cowboy chair lol. It would be very cute in a boys room that had a western theme.

The cushions on the Morris chair can always be re upholstered we have re done the similar ones on my dad's rocker. The wood on that one is in very good condition. Several years ago on The New Yankee Workshop show Norm made a Morris chair from scratch. He went and looked at an original and drew a schematic plan. It turned out beautiful. My husband loved that particular episode and has always wanted to make one like Norm did. He does good wood working and I would love to see the results. If I showed him this one he might want to drive back to Dallas! No! Too soon for that.

I wish I had a Norm Abrams in my life.

    @auntjen

This reminded me of the cowboy chair --- but maybe it's more Turkish? Add some Kilim?
