Don't hate me...I'm starting over.

Please don't hate me, but I'm starting over with my area rugs choice. First, thank you to all of you who have followed my previous posts and have offered awesome opinions and advice.

I have decided to go back to basics. First, my throw pillows are paisley. Common patterns that compliment paisley include geometric patterns and solids. Well, my beige sofa and teal chairs are solid, so I'd like the rug to have a geometric pattern. Perhaps scrolls or trellis as I feel it's soft and feminine like my chairs and better matched to my overall home decor?? Second, the teal chairs are more of a blue-teal...dark and rich. The complimentary color on the wheel chart is orange, split with red. I happen to love Orange...especially burnt or rust orange. I also have a slew of awesome rust/burnt/dark orange pillows from my master bedroom (which is grey and burnt orange). Finally, my painting is primarily gold and teal, but there are a few stokes of dark/rust orange around the whole piece. With all of that said, perhaps an "orange" and ivory/beige rug would be most fitting, complimenting, and eye-catching. I could add some of my "orange" pillows, add an orange throw, and call it good. So, again...am I totally off my rocker to suggest orange? Does my rug HAVE TO include teal as previously thought/suggested? What are your thoughts?

Here are some rug choices:

I like the first 3 best.

IMO, your rug doesnt have to have teal in it, as long as you have some teal in the room other than your chairs. Teal is a strong color so a little bit goes a long way.

Where's the teal? I think you still need a rug with beige and teal and also the rust.

So, I vote none of the above, sorry.

But, I do agree that the other rugs were not the best choices for your living room in your previous thread, so I am glad you are starting over.

    Here is my space again, btw;

    Here are the dominate pieces:

    1. Sofa. I do not use the lumbar pillow. Its ugly in person. But I do use the others.

    2. Chairs. They are called Pacific Blue, but in person they are a deep teal.

    3. Coffee Table

    4. Painting:

    @RoseAbbey:

2 teal wingback chairs, teal in two paisley throw pillows, and teal in a large painting. I think it's enough teal, which is why I wondering if it had to be in the rug, too.

That is plenty of teal. You are on the right track, find a rug without teal. If you do pick orange or rust, there should be a bit of that in your accessories as well. Pick a muted orange or rust, you dont want anything too bright.

I like #2 best for your room. I would, however, add some orange throw pillows on the sofa to bring in some additional orange to the room.

    #2.

I like #2 as well, the color effect is more muted.

Thinking a gold/ochre color could also be a nice accent - but I missed the previous discussion, so don't know if that's already been considered...?

For example, this combo - not necessarily the pattern, tho:

Did the pillows come with the sofa, or did you have them made? If you don't love them, pick the rug you love, then recover the pillows with a fabric that pulls in all the colors. I do like the one posted by Caole above.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the direction you suggest, but I vote no on all of the above.

The first group, to me, look very inexpensive ... kind of indoor/outdoor-y. The second one I think might read like a solid, which would seem odd unless you had a lot of patter(s) with that color elsewhere. The third one looks like an old 80s pattern, Savoy, iirc? To me, the last one has become so uber-popular that it is very very cliche and either already out, or about 5 seconds from "out" (NOTE" I own two rugs of that pattern in aqua, which makes it double out).

For me, operative word: Me, introducing any orange rug would create too many clowns in the room, or too many cooks, too many stars, whatever, but for *me* the look would not be restful. Your desired effect may vary. To me, the chairs are gorgeous and sophisticated, the couch, restful, calming. To me these pieces are calling for a carpet that will unite and support them, play well, but not take center stage. If that makes any sense.

gramarows said exactly what I was thinking, too. I think the teal and the orange, while complementary colors, will fight with each other if you just introduce a big patch of orange. My eye and aesthetics would require the rug to include the teal and be a little more subdued to allow the beautiful chairs and the coffee table to be seen. The picture above your couch is quite bold; something so bold on the floor will just make everything else disappear. And I think the "everything else" are the best features of the room.

I also agree with Oly. It is the art that is making it hard for you to choose. I think for one you should add some wood around the frame in a dark stained color and hang it a bit higher. I would then go for subdued neutral color in the rug.

I still like #2 but you need more orange in the room if you,go with an orange rug. How large a rug are you thinking about?

I'm sure I missed an earlier discussion, but why do you feel like you need an area rug over the carpeting? Not a fan of that look myself but just wondered if there was a practical reason.

    First, thank you all!!

Second, to answer a few people above: I wanted an area rug (8x10 or 9x12) to anchor my furniture. When I walk in the front door, I feel like everything in my living room is randomly floating (for lack of a better depiction). I feel my area could be really cozy, but isn't because it isn't anchored as its own space. The carpet in this house is very low pile and runs throughout the entire space. I feel a neutral rug on already nuetral carpet would look silly. Perhaps a patterned grey or shaggy white??? UGH!!

Oh, I really like that last one Raven posted! I don't think your rug has to be neutral and blah, just not as vibrant as the pic and your chairs. Something part way between the neutral of the carpet and sofa and vibrancy of the other two things.

#2 and only that one. You will have to change the pillows on the sofa.

I know you didn't ask, but I think the art over the sofa is making your rug choice difficult. I'm not sure what it is, but I believe that the aqua of the art is all that you notice about it because it's so bright. It's kind of defining the room as being mostly aqua. It's also very busy. I'd take down the art first and then play around with the rugs.

I would also choose an oriental rug, not a modern one.

Yes, that is what I was thinking! I also agree about the painting. But, it could work with the above choice of Ak and Raven.

I like AKtillery's choice. I just got a rug from that same site in a "navy blue" colorway and it is closer to a deep teal than true navy, IMO. I think it could look really pretty. They have free returns so you could get a small size and return if you didn't like it.

I know they are polypro and some of the others you've looked at are wool, but mine feels very nice and my guests were surprised after standing on it that it wasn't wool.

    Sorry for the bad photo

Your rug looks great butternut. I have one from there as well! I love it. It's navy but also has some teal/aqua in it.

I also have to agree that the art is really the culprit in making the decision so difficult. I'd use a framed piece with a white matt.

Something like this could be a lot easier to decorate around even though it's colorful.

Aktillery, yes, I wanted to buy your exact rug, but I ended up getting the other because it came in the size I wanted. It really is pretty, much better than I was expecting. DH is happy because it doesn't shed at all. Now I want to buy more to put in other places in my house!

I'm with butternut they are great! I bought a runner also. Now I want at least four more for other places in my house but I will have to wait.

I think her art is brand new, but I think some of the rugs posted recently would work well with it and the teal chairs. I hope she likes them, too!

Hi all! So, I LOVE my art, BUT I will be framing it as someone suggested. I do love all the oriental rugs posted...all beautiful. And the FREE RETURNS is key!!! Thank you!!! So, now I'm back to oriental rugs.

    NEW DIRECTION: CLASSIC. Done.

This rug would look great if you had dark hardwood floors, but not on top of the wall to wall carpet, it is too light or similar to what you have.

Agree with the above comment. I don't think it'll add anything more to the room.

    last modified: 10 years ago

Am I remembering right that this is a rental? If so, I wouldn't worry about it working perfectly with the carpet.

You said, DONE, so I assume you bought it. I think it will add a richness to your seating area and let the coffee table really show. I think many of us would have chosen an oriental style, but if the cream swirls makes you happy, then that's all that matters! I think your room has evolved very nicely from when you first posted. I hope you'll post again when it's in place!

It is classic and I think it's a better choice than the other earlier ones you posted. You can always add the colors you want in accessories.

What site did butternut and aktil buy the rugs from?

Sorry to throw the thread off course.

I like the last photo posted, not sure how it will work over the carpet, but it does look very nice and fresh.
