Stairs to open plan, hardwood direction faux pas?

We have tile in the entry and 5 stairs approx 5 ft wide going up to the main area. Hardwood on the stairs will run the length of the stairs, but I would like the hardwood on the main floor to run in a perpendicular direction as it would work better in the kitchen and hallway. Also, our joists run parallel to the stairs. Is this OK? I have been told by a contractor the hardwood should always run the same direction as the stairs.....
