Anyone have/collect Couroc of Monterey

I found a tray at an estate sale and paid $5.00 for it. I had never seen or heard of Couroc of Monterey before. I don't collect anything but would be interested in getting a few more Couroc of Monterey items if I come across them. If you have any Couroc of Monterey do you use them or display them? Do you have any pictures?

This is the tray the I have.

Ooh, nice. I don't collect it but my parents have a similar tray from the 60s, I think with a circus scene instead of roadrunners. I like the roadrunners! I'll check it out today and see if it is Couroc, and send you a picture. Thanks for the prompt!

I remember those trays. I think I may have actually sold them in a department store I worked at in California back in the 70s. Or more likely dusted them as I don't remember them being a hot seller. But that name doesn't ring a bell. I wonder if another company also made them.

I was given one many years ago, but don't know if I still have it. There are 587 listing for 'Couroc tray' on eBay HERE.

It must have been that brand. Well, now we know at least 587 people DID buy these trays. I don't know why they were a slow seller. Might have been the Central Coast market. Some are really adorable.

They are very MCM which is not normally my thing but I do like the ones with the birds. The detail of the inlays are very nice.

Yes, they were very well done. I think by the 60s and 70s people stopped serving dainty hor d'ourvres. The wooden cheese board with cracker tray and tile trivet was the must-have entertainment item.

Goodness, I love that. We have Roadrunners in our yard often, and I adore them. What a great find!

I have one! It was my parent's and I love it. The one I have was made as a promotional gift by California Canners and Growers of Sunnyvale CA. They were a coop of growers and canners, and my Dad represented them back in the 60's. Mine has a small cutting board set into it on one side, and the inlay is a front view of a cable car. I do use it for cheese and crackers on occasion.

There is a matching round road runner tray on the eBay link for $3. 99. These are very mcm, I am pretty sure mom had one but I don't recall what was on it. I love the dancing frogs one on the eBay link. I have accidentally apparently started collecting green frogs, it started innocently with 3 very cute little ceramic green frogs in different positions. Now I have several more that have been given to me. My grandchildren thought it was very funny that I had a green frog collection so they bought me more. I now have a solar powered green bobble head frog. Lol Oh yes and a tye dyed Peace Love Frogs shirt from the Rainforest Cafe courtesy of my husband and grandchildren, I actually love it. So be careful about what you are starting here!

I found one at an antique store a few years ago. It's a tray w/ two partridges on it on a black background. Had never heard of Couroc before but it struck me as something that harked back to my childhood - the "Mad Men" era ;)

I looked up the history of how Couroc came to be & found it fascinating, especially as DS works in the field of materials science.

Dashing out to a GDD's hockey game, but will try to post a pic of mine later.

Rory - your tray brings back a long forgotten memory. We had the same one - the Road Runner tray. My Mother is from New Mexico and the Road Runner is the state bird. I don't know where she bought it but it sat on our bookcase for many years. Thanks for bringing back a fond memory.

Jshore, Your tray great and is probably more collectible than most other Couroc. I have been looking on Etsy and Ebay and have not seem one similar to yours. It looks to be in excellent condition also. The Roadrunner one that I bought at the estate sale still had the Couroc sticker on the back but does have some light scratching on the surface. I also like the rocks glasses with the bird images but I don't think that they would be dishwasher safe.

I grew up in a town near Monterey and received two Couroc trays as wedding gifts over forty years ago. They were very popular in the Central Coast, but I don't remember ever seeing them for sale outside the West Coast. The factory was just off Cannery Row in Monterey; one of my brothers worked there during college vacations.

I cannot find my tray :(

Before last year's remodel I used to put it out in the Fall. As so much has changed, I forgot about it this year until this post. I must have carefully packed it away when we moved everything out & it's not where I thought it would be.

If/when I find it, I'll post. Pre reno, before the attic got reorganized, I knew where everything was, even though it looked like a jumbled mess. Now that it's respectable I can't find things as easily.

Thanks, Rory. I'm not sure how collectible mine is, but it doesn't matter since I'm not parting with it. :-) It does have some cracking on the cutting board section. It was really interesting looking through them all on Etsy and Ebay. I too, like the road runner glasses, but they do probably need to be hand washed.

Amck2- I've lived in this house for 8 years, and I still can't find couple of things. I thought I was pretty organized.

I have a couple, including a roadrunner one, that belonged to my parents. They were popular when we lived in New Mexico in the seventies.

rory your roadrunner tray is great and brought back memories! We have one with a whimsical whale that we were given as a gift by a special house guest sometime in the 70s. They were popular on the East Coast as I remember them for sale in shops on the Cape- especially the shore birds and whales.

rory you will love these wonderful trays. I lived in Pacific grove where these were sold at the high end Holman's back in 1977 . I have quite a few now but then could not afford them .
