What kind of ground cover is that (does not appear to be rocks)?

    Hello,
    The brown textured ground cover is pine straw. It is used here in the south in place of bark mulch. With the high humidity that comes with living near the coast, the pine straw allows air to flow through to the soil below, preventing mold.

    The pine straw will eventually be replaced by creeping or spreading (green) cover, which is definitely my preference.
