What roses are you getting for next year?

When I joined last year, I remember a similar thread...so here it is for this year.

Here's mine

  • Madame Isaac Pereire (already here)
  • Pat Austin
  • Buff Beauty (after reading this forum, I may regret this one)
  • Claire Ausin
  • Bolero
  • Pope John Paul II
  • Molineux (sp?)
  • princess Alexandra of Kent
  • Julia Child
  • Pretty in Pink Eden
  • Tamora
  • Sophie's Rose
  • Love Song
  • Souvanir de la Malmaison

Still on the fence about Pretty Jessica. Cannot justify paying $21 shipping charges.

Love to hear and Google what you guys are getting/ordering for next year.

Wow, so many beautiful roses you guys are getting. I'm going to find sometime to look up all the roses here next week. A major part of the fun for me is to look up and find out more about each rose to acquire next. And like some of you, I have absolutely no room to grow more roses. Of the twelve coming, I only have three spots! Hoping to find cheap pots for them:)

    Thanks for sharing.

    Sad but: 0

No more room. Unless something dies, there just isn't anywhere to put anything. My yard is just too small. I will live vicariously through you guys, so much I would love to try!

    Mini's in pots Ninkas. :-)

I would get Quadra if I could find it bareroot.

    My current list:

    Rosanna

    Quick silver

    Florentina

    Plum perfect

    Poseidon

    Heaven on earth

    Mother of pearl

    Bolero

    First crush

    Dark desire

I'm still thinking it over. It depends on which ones don't make it through the winter.

1 )For sure, Sunny Side Up to replace a mini that lost its roots to voles.

    2) I very much want Elizabeth of Goshen but she's proving hard to find.

    3) Maybe Rosarie de l'Hay (sp?) if I believe it might grow in the spot that I have.

    4) Also, maybe Cream Veranda and ??? to replace a couple in the front driveway bed that might not make it. (This seems likely.)

5)DH would like Dark Desire or one that looks like it with same amount of fragrance. I told him that I'd get one if I could find the space.

    6) Eyes for You if I can find it and find the right spot

I have a lot on my wish list but I need to work on the property line border where I'd like to grow my special fav's someday- tea noisettes.

    Careefree Celebration for sure...

Despite having no room, I just ordered Sister Elizabeth from Heirloom's 30% off sale. It's not an easy rose because of its thin canes and flowers that hang down but I love its lilac pink color and overall look of the blooms. I might try the tomato cage idea that someone posted here recently.

Oooooh!!! I looked up Sister Elizabeth - I love it too!!! I think the tomato cage idea would be wonderful for that rose!! It's a stunner!

So far the only rose I have ordered is Honorine de Brabant. I will definitely order another John Cabot for the other side of an arbor, and I'm sure I'll find at least 2 or 3 more to order over the long winter months.

Jim1961, I just reread an older post and happened to notice you were considering Rose of Hope. Just to let you know the color is only like its photo for maybe a day or two at the most. It quickly changes to the same orange as Brilliant Veranda. So it was quickly apparent that I needed to move it to a small hot colored rose bed that I have. This is where the roses go that turned out to be far to harsh a color to mix in anywhere else.

Chamblees accidently sent me Brilliant Veranda. I never ordered it as I had it once and it black spots badly here. I planted them anyway (they sent two) and they still black spot. What a shame as this rose pumps out blooms like mad. In a bed with other hot colors it's very pretty as well.

Can't tell anything about health as it did not appreciate the move.

Chris, I got my Rose of Hope from Chamblees. I purchased 3 of them they are all indentical. Would you have any idea what the mix up could be. Some one else had posted photos on here of Rose of Hope and I knew one of us had the wrong rose. Since Chamblee Rose Nursery has always been so dependable for me I assumed she had the wrong rose. I'd love to receive the correct Rose of Hope but seriously detest complaining. Mine truly blends perfectly with Brilliant Veranda after the first day.

Okay, I just looked at photos on HMF and I definitely have the wrong rose. Could Chamblees have received the wrong cuttings from their supplier. If so I'm probably not the only one to get the wrong rose.

Hi Chris, Just checked all of the floribundas on your site. The only one that matches mine is Garden Delight which Chamblees does not sell. Checked photos on HMF and it's a match. Hope not too many other people got the mixed up rose as their most likely not to happy.

I haven't ordered anything for next spring. I'm trying to cut back and will wait and see what doesn't winter. I'll probably just pick up some things locally then to fill in if I have to.

    Hi Patty,

I don't think that Chamblee ever received Garden Delight and also it never turns orange. It is a cluster bloomer with smaller flowers than Rose of Hope but very similar in color. The only one of the Kordes than comes to mind as yellow with orange and then turning orange quickly is Summer Sun. Another possibility is Brothers Grimm but it finishes in a dark neon pink. Chamblee sells a lot of other roses that are not from Kordes so it could be something else. Let me show you another picture of Rose of Hope from Germany which is a much colder climate and the petal edge color is darker in cold climates, but it does not turn dark orange and some of the flowers still are primarily yellow.

    Rose of Hope -Germany

    Summer Sun

    Patty,

Just talked with Chamblee and they said you called them. Just to be clear New Flora does not supply to Chamblee material for sale so please don't say we are at fault. Are you sure you ordered it from Chamblee? They do not show it on orders for you. I think the best course of action is for you to take images of this rose when it blooms again so we can have a look and see what you have.

I am getting Kordes climber Jasmina for my daughter who moved to a new house recently. Her garden is small so it will probably be the only rose in it but I think it will make an impact covering the tall fence to her neighbor's. I suppose that I shall have to take care of her garden as she has little time for gardening so I picked what I think is a healthy and easy rose. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.39722&tab=36

Yes the invoice in front of me says Chamblee's. As far as anything else not sure of what you talking about so can't comment.

I do have Summer Sun and Brothers Grimm. I'm quite pleased with all of my Kordes Roses.

    Thank you, Pat

Patty, Love the Summer Sun! Do the blooms last long?

I've ordered a couple more than I listed back in October.

Besides the previously mentioned Love Song and Olivia Rose Austin, I have ordered a Broceliande and 3 Toscana Vigorosas (small spreading ground-cover type of rose).

    Kate

2 Oklahomas, 3 Boleros, 1 Buff Beauty, and General Schablikine. The General has already arrived.

I am running out of room...

Aw, I'm envious of Quick Silver. But I have Eden on the way next month. I wish I had room for both.

Carefree Celebration and Watercolors homerun... Still debating if there will be any others added...

I am getting: Ramblin' Red, Forgotten Dreams, Eden, Westerland, and Clair Matin in the spring. I have three more on my list (Queen of Sweden, Abraham Darby, and either Violet's Pride or Love Song for my lavender), but have unfortunately found myself suddenly unemployed and cannot justify anymore rose purchases for the time being. Hopefully that changes soon.

My list right now is obscenely long -- but to be fair, most of it will be going to my cemetery project. So here I'll list just what I'm getting for myself.

Condesa de Sastago -- Burlington Roses
    Denise Cassegrain -- Burlington Roses
Duchesse de Rohan -- Rogue Valley Roses
Duchess of Portland -- Rogue Valley Roses
Jacques Cartier (aka Marchessa Bochella) -- High Country Roses
    Lady Forteviot -- Burlington Roses
    Marbree -- Rogue Valley Roses
Mme Platz -- Rogue Valley Roses
    Padre -- Burlington Roses
President Herbert Hoover -- Burlington Roses
    Salet -- Rogue Valley Roses
    Sidonie -- High Country Roses
Soupert et Notting -- Rogue Valley Roses
    Sunshine -- Burlington Roses
    Talisman -- Burlington Roses

...plus some things that evil enabler Kim Rupert (aka roseseek) is sending me. Knowing him, anything I casually mentioned will be arriving as calloused cuttings in a box this Spring. Basically, anything old, weird, or rare that caught my eye and needs to be "spread around" will be coming here.

I still need a few more Polyanthas for the border on the side of my house. Of the list above, all but 'Denise Cassegrain' will remain as pot-pets. The hardy HPs, Damask Perpetuals, and Mosses will be going in 22" resin barrels and left out for Winter. The rest will go in 15" pots and get tucked away in my back porch when temperatures drop below 25F.

And if you're curious about what's coming so far for the cemetery, I have the garden listed here on HelpMeFind. Everything so far ordered or coming as suckers/cuttings has been listed there. This year will be about old once-blooming roses to provide a "skeleton". Repeat-blooming oldies will follow next year.

    :-)

I'm interested in Carefree Celebration, let us know how it performs

    last modified: 9 years ago

I'm interested in 'AUSmixture' primarily because they are saying it may be their best one so far. I've asked for it at a local garden center but the answer I got did not make it clear to me if they are going to come through or not. No matter, if it is that great sometime it will become generally available.

    http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.70798.1&tab=36

'AUSmixture', Olivia Rose Austin, the new catalog also said it was shade tolerant. I'm interested but I need to see reviews from people in humid blackspot prone climates.

    my Chamblee's order

    Dark Desire

    Zaide

    Poseidon

'Denise Cassegrain' on Christopher's list looks a nice little rose, I haven't heard of before, but note it's available in Europe... I like the look of that one...

...Christopher, I've been looking on Google Maps at your cemetery as I follow your project reports.... some fine big trees in the churchyard, perhaps a little shady but some good planting areas, and a few walls too which I might like to take advantage of.... I also like the paved path running through from one street to the other and an archway on the Paterson St side.... most attractive... along with some plantings already in place...

...I was confused at first, as there is another church across the road and I thought it was that one until I checked the name....

...after all that digging, the nearby Pizza house would come in handy...

    modestgoddess79 - I'm getting Zaide too!!

My Hortico order arrived after Xmas. They had crop failure on BROTHER CADFAEL and REDOUTE, so I subbed with THE MAYFLOWER and ADMIRED MIRANDA. Also got HUNTINGTON ROSE, SPIRIT OF FREEDOM, GRAND IMPRESSION, ROTARY SUNRISE, FREDERICK MISTRAL, FREE SPIRIT and CHESS. Decided against the rest on that tentative order! But now I'm contemplating doing another order for CROCUS ROSE, EGLANTYNE, HYDE HALL and ST SWITHUN. Haven't quite gotten the nerve to click the send button yet tho.

Got a box from RVR yesterday. Got CANOODLING, AMAZING GRACE and APRIKOLA. Gotta get them potted up to bigger pots.

My Regan's order just got left on the front porch today, while I was out grocery shopping. Haven't even opened it up yet. Been raining again... Bummer. Gotta soak 'em tho. I got a replacement BIG MOMMA, CENTENNIAL STAR, OCTOBERFEST, FIREFIGHTER, IN THE MOOD, THE CHARLATAN, RASPBERRY CREAM TWIRL, MERCURY RISING, POLYNESIAN PUNCH, CANDY CANE COCKTAIL... and FIRED UP is backordered til February. Phew! That's the most in one order I've done in yrs. And this will probably be my last big one ever! I'm running out of room now for sure, and since I lost my job in August, and haven't gotten one yet, I can't really afford any more, til I do get a job again.

Oh but I am also considering an order from DA USA, but still haven't pared it down. So far am looking at OLIVIA ROSE AUSTIN, CHAS RENNIE MACINTOSH, THE WEDGEWOOD ROSE, BROTHER CADFAEL and maybe CROCUS ROSE if I don't do the Hortico order. I most likely won't. Oh and DA are replacing my PRINCESS ALEXANDRA OF KENT since she was the wrong rose and also ended up dying on me.

Crap... I don't need anything more.... gotta stop... (slap my hands!)

Marlorena -- there are indeed some nice big trees, and that does offer quite a bit of shade. The way the sun moves -- the Paterson St side faces east -- much of the garden in the walk-through part gets morning and late-day sun, with mid-day shade. Where you see the beds on the east-facing side gets the most sun, and that's where I'll be focusing more on repeat-blooming things. After I get my orders and pot them up to grow, I'll be heading down there to start picking planting spots, paying attention to how the sun hits the ground after the trees leaf out. In the meantime, I've been reading lots of comments on here and HelpMeFind by searching each individual rose I have coming for the church, taking notes about size and degree of shade tolerance to aid me with placement. I'd like to use the once-blooming things as focal points, behind tombstones, and perhaps some widely-spaced Gallicas along the iron fence. It'll all be discussed with Brian in Spring.

    :-)

    rosecanadian,

yes Zaide looks/sounds like a lovely shrub, I was a little concerned about it only having 2 stars for black spot resistance on the New Flora site but someone on Help me find is growing it no spray in Virginia so I thought I'd try my luck

    http://newflora.com/product/zaide-rose/

    http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.198168

this full bush pic of Zaide is also lovely

    http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.274436

I appreciate everyone on HMF who provides full bush shots, I have such limited yard I really need roses that make good garden/landscape plants

Well, things have changed since October, lol. With the new year came some offers I couldn't resist. I got an offer from some good friends for a free mini and a reduced price on two more so I ordered Bold Ruler and Jolene Adams. The free one is call Rosemarie I believe.

Then a local rose society sent out word that they are doing a fund raiser and are getting lots of great roses for only $14.00 a piece. How could I pass up that deal?! I decided it was a good opportunity to replace several of the old standbys that I had lost over the past two polar winters.

    Double Delight

    Gemini

    Love

    Touch of Class

    Tuscan Sun

And Spring is only 51 days away, yippee!!!

I thought I wasn't ordering any more but made the fatal mistake of buying Peter Kukielski's book Roses without Chemicals. Beautiful book with good info & mouthwatering photos. Last night I ordered the following from Northland R:-

    Peach Drift

    Dark Desire

    Savannah

    Fiji

    Yellow Brick Road

    Wedding Bells

They are all rated highly for disease-resistance so I am viewing this purchase as scientific research rather than sheer gluttony!

modestgoddess - First off - thanks for the links! Second off - the first link you provided lists the fragrance as slight to moderate. That's too bad. I want roses with lots of fragrance. Oh well, we'll see. HMF lists the fragrance as strong. :)

Rosecanadian, I'm looking forward to Victorian Memory! it's supposed to be quite cold hardy and I have a great spot for it!

I have Victorian Memory, it grows very fast, but no blooms yet, planted it last summer. I just added 3 Bonica and 1 Mother of Pearl to my rose order list, they were on sale at Michigan Bulbs.

I ordered Victorian Memory too:) couldn't pass it up lol! Rosecanadian, I ordered Zaide last year so it was new, but I found it to be quite fragrant.
