Strange caterpillar...please help identify (see photo in comments)!

I live in Charleston, SC and I'd just rescued another lizard from my cat when he started pouncing on this strange little guy. I've found similar pictures online but nobody ever confirms what they've found. The shell I'm holding him in isn't a small one...he was a decently fat fellow and I've never seen anything like it. I'd love to know what it is and if it's poisonous. Thanks all! (I keep uploading the photo but I'm not seeing it).
