Tankless Hot Water Choices

Hi Garden Web Folk!

I live in a small (900sq ft) home with 1 bathroom and we are in the throes of remodeling the kitchen and bath.

I'd like to go tankless for our hot water so that I can have more space in the basement (for our eventual basement remodel) as well as save energy. Even though we only have one bath and one kitchen sink, we have lots of roomates and friends that stay over so the hot water gets a lot of use, but not all at once (sometimes someone does dishes while another is in the shower but thats about it).

Since we have low demand, I am hoping that I can spend the money to get a tankless heater that will not sacrifice much when it comes to pressure or heat. Wondering if anyone has experience with any particular units and what you can recommend. Natural Gas or Electric>?

I'm leaning towards gas from the research I've done but open to feedback! Also I live in portland or so freezing is not much concern.

I've only installed the gas units. When a tankless hot wants to heat, it needs a lot of energy, and it needs it now. That means running very large electric lines to the unit from your breaker. The ones that I have looked at were two or three lines, each at 50 amps. That's a lot! More than your range!

Gas for sure and it is really important that the lines are not really long so best if the plumbing in you house is close together which should be in a small house.

Which on demand natural gas water heater would you recommend for a small house 3 sinks 1 shower I washer 4 people?

We had a Takagi natural gas fired tankless unit in our old house. It was on the third floor of a three story townhouse, water main supply from street level. We never waited more than 10 seconds for hot water anywhere in the house. Amazing units! Zero problems in five years. I think it was 120V supply for circuitry, but check as some may require 220V service.
